Superelastic Tension and Bending Characteristics of Shape Memory Alloys

        Tokuda, M .,Bundara, B .,Kuselj, B .,Ule, B .,Tuma, J . V . 대한금속재료학회(대한금속학회) 2000 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.6 No.4

The objective of this study was to develop a numerical model of the superelastic behavior of shape memory alloys (SMA) on a macro-scale level. Results from a study on this behavior under tension and pure bending tests are presented and discussed. Two SMA samples were used in the experimental work and subjected to various loading paths in tension and pure bending: a single crystalline CuZnAl alloy and polycrystalline NiTi wire. Bending tests were performed under a pure bending loading condition on a new testing apparatus designed for the specific needs of this study. The experimental part of this study focused mainly on the response of the SMA to the loading paths in a quasi-plastic domain where the deformation mechanism is dominantly governed by the stress-induced martensitic transformation. Experimental results obtained from the NiTi polycrystals by tensile tests indicate that the superelastic SMA exhibits sufficient repeatability useful enough for a modeling task, while similar results obtained from the single crystalline CuZnAl indicate that the same modeling approach is not easily feasible. The facts have been qualitatively verified by the experimental data from pure bending tests, and a further area as study is suggested.

Compensatory Usage of the Internet: The Case of Mukbang Watching on YouTube

        Kagan Kircaburun,Sabah Balta,Emrah Emirtekin,Ş,ule Betü,l Tosuntaş,,Zsolt Demetrovics,Mark D. Griffiths 대한신경정신의학회 2021 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.18 No.4

Objective Accumulating empirical research has emphasized that a wide range of online activities–such as using social networking sites–can be performed in order to compensate unattained needs or to cope with negative affect and psychopathological symptoms. Al-though the correlates of problematic social networking use have been extensively investigated, less is known about problematic YouTube use (PYU), an umbrella term grouping a number of different activities (e.g., viewing of online video games, watching specific YouTube channels). Furthermore, nothing is known concerning increasingly popular and distinct YouTube-related activities such as mukbang watching (i.e., watching livestream “eating broadcasts” where someone eats various foods in front of the camera while interacting with viewers). The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating role of problematic mukbang watching (PMW) on the relation-ships between depression and loneliness with PYU. Methods An online survey that comprised assessment tools for aforementioned variables was administered to 217 mukbang viewers (mean age=20.58 years, range 18–33 years). Results Results indicated that PMW was positively related to loneliness and PYU. Depression was positively and directly associated with PYU but was not associated with PMW. Conclusion Further research is required to better understand the psychological processes underlying problematic mukbang watching and its association with other mental health conditions (e.g., addictive disorders, eating disorders). Neuronal Elav-like (Hu) Proteins Regulate RNA Splicing and Abundance to Control Glutamate Levels and Neuronal Excitability

        Ince-Dunn, G.,Okano, Hirotaka J.,Jensen, K.B.,Park, W.Y.,Zhong, R.,Ule, J.,Mele, A.,Fak, John J.,Yang, C.,Zhang, C.,Yoo, J.,Herre, M.,Okano, H.,Noebels, Jeffrey L.,Darnell, Robert B. Cell Press 2012 Neuron Vol.75 No.6

The paraneoplastic neurologic disorders target several families of neuron-specific RNA binding proteins (RNABPs), revealing that there are unique aspects of gene expression regulation in the mammalian brain. Here, we used HITS-CLIP to determine robust binding sites targeted by the neuronal Elav-like (nElavl) RNABPs. Surprisingly, nElav protein binds preferentially to GU-rich sequences in vivo and in vitro, with secondary binding to AU-rich sequences. nElavl null mice were used to validate the consequence of these binding events in the brain, demonstrating that they bind intronic sequences in a position dependent manner to regulate alternative splicing and to 3'UTR sequences to regulate mRNA levels. These controls converge on the glutamate synthesis pathway in neurons; nElavl proteins are required to maintain neurotransmitter glutamate levels, and the lack of nElavl leads to spontaneous epileptic seizure activity. The genome-wide analysis of nElavl targets reveals that one function of neuron-specific RNABPs is to control excitation-inhibition balance in the brain. Video Abstract:

Familial Actinic Lichen Planus: Three Cases from the Same Family

        Şule Gökşin,Sadrettin Aksoy,Şeniz Duygulu,Neşe Çallı Demirkan 대한피부과학회 2022 Annals of Dermatology Vol.34 No.5

Actinic lichen planus (ALP) that affects sun-exposed areas of the skin is an uncommon variantof lichen planus. While ALP is commonly triggered by ultraviolet radiation exposure, genetic predisposition may also be important in the pathogenesis of the disease. Herein, wereport three patients with ALP from the same family, which supports the genetic etiopathogeneticfactors of ALP.

Justification of headscarf bans in Europe and Turkey: A comparative analysis

        H. Şule ALBAYRAK Asian Center for Women's Studies : Ewha Womans Uni 2023 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.29 No.4

This study aims to descriptively analyze public debates in Europe and Turkey on Muslim women’s head coverings in the context of similarities and differences. The main question the study attempts to answer is: How are the headscarf bans in Europe and Turkey discursively constructed and justified after 9/11 in Europe and the 28 February 1997 era in Turkey and what differences and parallels can be observed? With this question in mind, I first summarize the practices regarding the headscarf in Europe and Turkey and the policies adopted by the states. I also examine how headscarf bans are justified in public discourses in European countries and in Turkey. What the study ultimately reveals is that despite their differences in cultural, religious, and socio-political backgrounds, the European countries and Turkey have developed comparable perspectives and procedures regarding the representation of Muslim women in the public sphere during the historical eras compared.

Preparation and characterization of polymer-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles and their application in Subtilisin immobilization

Belma Özbek,Şule Ünal 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.7

The preparation and characterization of polymer-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and their application in Subtilisin (Alcalase®) immobilization were investigated. For the synthesis of polymer-coated MSNs, acrylic acid (AA) and chitosan (CS) mixture were blended as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and CS polymer layer onto MSNs via in-situ polymerization technique. Then, both uncoated MSNs and polymer-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (CS-PAA/MSNs) were characterized by taking into account properties such as morphologic pattern, size distribution, surface charge of the particles as well as thermogravimetric stability with SEM, TEM, Zetasizer and TGA analyses. Subtilisin was immobilized onto polymer-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles via adsorption technique. For optimizing the enzyme immobilization process, the percent enzyme loading depending on the matrix amount, immobilization time and pH were investigated. Then, the activity values of immobilized enzyme and free enzyme were compared at various pH and temperature values. The maximum enzyme activity was achieved at pH 9.0 for both immobilized and free enzyme. Immobilized enzyme showed more stability at higher temperatures compared with free enzyme. Furthermore, the operational and storage stability of immobilized enzyme were determined. The activity of immobilized enzyme was reduced from 100% to 45.83% after five repeated uses. The storage stability of immobilized enzyme was found to be higher than that of free enzyme. The activity of immobilized enzyme was reduced from 100% to 60% after 28 days of storage time. We concluded that the polymer-coated MSNs were a suitable matrix for Subtilisin immobilization compared to uncoated MSNs.

Investigation of Blood Betatrophin Levels in Obese Children with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

        Fatih Battal,Hakan Türkön,Nilüfer Aylanç,Hakan Aylanç,Şule Yıldırım,Nazan Kaymaz,Sema Uysal 대한소아소화기영양학회 2018 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.21 No.2

Purpose: The prevalence of obesity has significantly increased among children and adolescents worldwide and is becoming an important health care problem in parallel with the increased prevalence of obesity pediatric non-alco-holic fatty liver disease. Betatrophin is a newly define hormone that is commonly secreted by liver and plays role in glucose tolerance. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum betatrophin levels and non-alco-holic fatty liver disease in obese children. Methods: The study included 40 obese children with a body mass index (BMI) above 95th centile, and 35 non-obese subjects with a BMI 3-85th centile, whose age and gender were similar to those of the patient group. For the evaluation of metabolic parameters fasting serum glucose, insulin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lipid profile and serum betatrophin levels were measured. Total cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios were calculated as “atherogenicindices.”Results: Serum betatrophin levels of the obese subjects were similar to that of non-obese subjects (p=0.90). Betatrophin levels were not correlated with the metabolic parameters. Conclusion: In the present study, levels of betatrophin are not different between obese and insulin resistant children and non-obese subjects, and they are not correlated with atherogenic indices. To elucidate the exact role of beta-trophin in obesity, further studies are required to identify the betatrophin receptor and/or other possible cofactors.
