"Wing-On" Store and the Fashion of Life in the Modern Times of Shanghai

This paper examines Wing On Store and the fashion of life in the Modem Times of Shanghai. In this period, the urban modernity of Shanghai manifested in full. The dressing of women in Shanghai was natural and in good taste, and it gave a full play of the charm of female body. Products of Western science and technology, such as radio, camera, record player and telephone, had morphed from luxury goods to everyday commodities and they changed the resident`s way of entertainment, leisure and communication. The enthusiasm for travel-abroad or home-opened the window of understanding the world and expanded people`s horizon. In this process, Wing On Store persisted in the strategy of selling intermediate- and high-end goods and exerted a great influence on the prosperity and vanity of Nanjing Road. This store would, anyways, keep a stock of merchandise, which was in fashion in the West. From its opening in September 1918 to the end in 1949, Wing On Store was always the leader and promoter of the fashion of life in modem Shanghai.

본 연구는 영안백화점과 근대 상해의 생활양식을 탐구한다. 근대 상해는 소비 영역에 있어서 도시 모더니티가 극명히 드러나던 시기였다. 상해에서 여성복은 고상하고 자연스러웠는데, 특히 여성스러운 신체의 매력을 강조하였다. 서양 과학기술의 산물인 라디오, 사진기, 축음기, 전화기 등이 사치품에서 일용품으로 변화하면서 사람들의 오락, 여가, 교제 방식 등이 바뀌었다. 특히 국내외 여행에 대한 열기는 세계를 이해하는 칭을 열어주고 시야를 확대하였다. 오랫동안 중고가격의 상품 판매를 중심으로 했던 영안백화점은 난징로〔南京路〕의 번영과 화려한 겉치레에 있어 중대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 서양시장에서 유행하던 상품의 대부분은 특수한 집단들을 만족시키기 위해 영안백화점에 두루 갖추어져 있었다. 1918년 9월부터 1949년까지 영안백화점은 당시 상해 모던 생활의 리더이자 추동자였다.
