On the Modernity of Willa Cather’s My Ántonia

        ( Zhang¸ Bin ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2020 영어권문화연구 Vol.13 No.1

Willa Cather is a prominent female novelist in the early of the 20th century, when the modernist novel was taking its form and expanding its influence. Though it is mostly for her realistic and stylistic writing that Willa Cather takes an important place in American literature, her work My Ántonia bears the stamp of modernism both in the writing techniques and the modernist theme. In this paper, My Ántonia’s modernity was analyzed from the use of modernist techniquepolyphony and the modernist theme of people's existential dilemma and the motif of death. To begin with, the characters in this novel have their own independent consciousness and can voice their own understanding of the world equally and freely, and therefore, My Ántonia is definitely what Bakhtin called the “polyphonic novel”. Besides, Jimmy’s life trajectory manifested the modern people’s existential dilemma in the capitalist society. Last but not the least, the motif of death keeps recurring in this novel, which is quite impressive and symbolic. The death story symbolizes the despair of the migrants in America superficially, the despair of the human beings in the large and deep.

ENVIRONMENTAL DYNAMICS IN AN INTEGRATED WALRASIAN-GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM AND NEOCLASSICAL-GROWTH THEORY

Wei-Bin Zhang 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2014 Journal of Economic Development Vol.39 No.3

This study deals with interactions of economic growth and environmental change with heterogeneous households. The analytical framework is built by integrating the three important theories in economics - the Walrasian general equilibrium theory, the neoclassical growth theory, and the neoclassical growth model with endogenous environment. The three theories are integrated by applying Zhang’s approach to household behavior. The economic system consists of one capital goods sector, one consumer goods sector, one environmental sector, and any number (of types) of households. The motion is described by a set of differential equations. For illustration, we simulated the motion of the economic system with three groups. The comparative analyses provide some insights into the complexity of economic growth with environment. For instance, the study by Grossman and Krueger (1995, p. 353) identifies no evidence that “environmental quality deteriorates steadily with economic growth.” Our simulation indicates that although the conclusion made by Crossman and Krueger holds for the national economy, but is invalid for a certain group.

      • One-Step Sub-micrometer-Scale Electrohydrodynamic Inkjet Three-Dimensional Printing Technique with Spontaneous Nanoscale Joule Heating

        Zhang, Bin,Seong, Baekhoon,Lee, Jaehyun,Nguyen, VuDat,Cho, Daehyun,Byun, Doyoung American Chemical Society 2017 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.9 No.35

<P>A one-step sub-micrometer-scale electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet three-dirnensional (3D)-printing technique that is based on the drop-on demand (DOD) operation for which an additional postsintering process is not required is proposed. Both the numerical simulation and the experimental observations proved that nanoscale Joule heating Occurs at the interface between the charged silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) because of the high electrical contact resistance during the printing process; this is the reason why an additional postSintering process is not required. Sub-micrometer-scale 3D structures were printed with an above-35 aspect ratio via the use of the proposed printing technique; furthermore, it is evident that the designed 3D structures such as a bridge-like shape can be printed with the use of the proposed printing technique, allowing for the cost-effective fabrication of a 3D touch sensor and an ultrasensitive tihict air flow-rate sensor. It is believed that the proposed one-step printing technique May replace the conventional 3D conductive-structure printing techniques for which a postsintering, process is used 'because of its economic efficiency.</P>

Preparation of Octadecylamine-Graphene/MgCl2-Supported Ziegler-Natta Catalyst and Its Application in Ethylene Polymerization

        Zhang, Hao,Liu, Jing-Sheng,Zhang, He-Xin,Ko, Eun-Bin,Park, Jae-Hyeong,Moon, Young-Kwon,Shin, Byeong-Kwang,Zhang, Xue-Quan,Yoon, Keun-Byoung American Scientific Publishers 2018 Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology Vol.18 No.4

<P>A facile coagglomeration method for preparing a long alkyl chain modified graphene oxide (MGO)/MgCl2-supported Ti-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst was reported. The effects of MGO on the catalyst morphology and activity for ethylene polymerization were examined. The resultant polyethylene (PE)/MGO nanocomposites exhibited a layered morphology, with the MGO fillers being well dispersed and exhibiting strong interfacial adhesion to the PE matrix. The thermal stability and mechanical properties of the PE were significantly enhanced with the introduction of a small amount of the MGO filler. Thus, this work provides a facile approach to the production of high-performance PE.</P>

      • 3D printing of high-resolution PLA-based structures by hybrid electrohydrodynamic and fused deposition modeling techniques

        Zhang, Bin,Seong, Baekhoon,Nguyen, VuDat,Byun, Doyoung IOP 2016 JOURNAL OF MICROMECHANICS AND MICROENGINEERING - Vol.26 No.2

<P>Recently, the three-dimensional (3D) printing technique has received much attention for shape forming and manufacturing. The fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer is one of the various 3D printers available and has become widely used due to its simplicity, low-cost, and easy operation. However, the FDM technique has a limitation whereby its patterning resolution is too low at around 200 <I>μ</I>m. In this paper, we first present a hybrid mechanism of electrohydrodynamic jet printing with the FDM technique, which we name E-FDM. We then develop a novel high-resolution 3D printer based on the E-FDM process. To determine the optimal condition for structuring, we also investigated the effect of several printing parameters, such as temperature, applied voltage, working height, printing speed, flow-rate, and acceleration on the patterning results. This method was capable of fabricating both high resolution 2D and 3D structures with the use of polylactic acid (PLA). PLA has been used to fabricate scaffold structures for tissue engineering, which has different hierarchical structure sizes. The fabrication speed was up to 40 mm/s and the pattern resolution could be improved to 10 <I>μ</I>m.</P>

      • 9.73% Efficiency Nonfullerene All Organic Small Molecule Solar Cells with Absorption-Complementary Donor and Acceptor

        Bin, Haijun,Yang, Yankang,Zhang, Zhi-Guo,Ye, Long,Ghasemi, Masoud,Chen, Shanshan,Zhang, Yindong,Zhang, Chunfeng,Sun, Chenkai,Xue, Lingwei,Yang, Changduk,Ade, Harald,Li, Yongfang American Chemical Society 2017 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.139 No.14

<P>In the last two years, polymer solar cells (PSCs) developed quickly with n-type organic semiconductor (n-OSs) as acceptor. In contrast, the research progress of nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) with organic small molecule as donor and the n-OS as acceptor lags behind. Here, we synthesized a D-A structured medium bandgap organic small molecule H11 with bithienyl-benzodithiophene (BDTT) as central donor unit and fluorobenzo-triazole as acceptor unit, and achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.73% for the all organic small molecules OSCs with H11 as donor and a low bandgap n-OS IDIC as acceptor. A control molecule H12 without thiophene conjugated side chains on the BDT unit was also synthesized for investigating the effect of the thiophene conjugated side chains on the photovoltaic performance of the p-type organic semiconductors (p-OSs). Compared with H12, the 2D-conjugated H11 with thiophene conjugated side chains shows intense absorption, low-lying HOMO energy level, higher hole mobility and ordered bimodal crystallite packing in the blend films. Moreover, a larger interaction parameter (chi) was observed in the H11 blends calculated from Hansen solubility parameters and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. These special features combined with the complementary absorption of H11 donor and IDIC acceptor resulted in the best PCE of 9.73% for nonfullerene all small molecule OSCs up to date. Our results indicate that fluorobenzotriazole based 2D conjugated p-OSs are promising medium bandgap donors in the nonfullerene OSCs.</P>

      • Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Trichostatin A Enhances Antitumor Effects of Docetaxel or Erlotinib in A549 Cell Line

Zhang, Qun-Cheng,Jiang, Shu-Juan,Zhang, Song,Ma, Xiao-Bin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.7

Background and Objective: Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors represent a promising class of potential anticancer agents for treatment of human malignancies. In this study, we investigated the effect of trichostatin A (TSA), one such HDAC inhibitor, in combination with docetaxel (TXT), a cytotoxic chemotherapy agent or erlotinib, a novel molecular target therapy drug, on lung cancer A549 cells. Methods: A549 cells were treated with TXT, erlotinib alone or in combination with TSA, respectively. Cell viability, apoptosis, and cell cycle distribution were evaluated using MTT (3- (4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, Hochst33258 staining and flow cytometry. Moreover, immunofluorescent staining and Western blot analysis were employed to examine alterations of ${\alpha}$-tubulin, heat shock protein 90 (hsp90), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and caspase-3 in response to the different exogenous stimuli. Results: Compared with single-agent treatment, co-treatment of A549 cells with TSA/TXT or TSA/erlotinib synergistically inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and caused cell cycle delay at the $G_2/M$ transition. Treatment with TSA/TXT or TSA/erlotinib led to a significant increase of cleaved caspase-3 expression, also resulting in elevated acetylation of ${\alpha}$-tubulin or hsp90 and decreased expression of EGFR, which was negatively associated with the level of acetylated hsp90. Conclusions: Synergistic anti-tumor effects are observed between TXT or erlotinib and TSA on lung cancer cells. Such combinations may provide a more effective strategy for treating human lung cancer.

The strong absorption bands in the VUV range of un-doped and RE3+-activated BGBO were observed. The band range from 140 to 200 nm with a peak at about 173 nm results from the host lattice absorption. For Sm3+-activated BGBO, the charge transfer transition from O2- to Sm3+ was observed at 202 nm. In addition, it exhibits bright red emission originating from the Sm3+ <I>f</I>-<I>f</I> transitions of 4G5/2 → 6H <I>J</I> (<I>J</I> = 5/2, 7/2 and 9/2). The O2--Eu3+ charge transfer (CT) at 249 nm is observed in the excitation spectrum for Eu3+-doped BGBO. For Tb3+-activated BGBO, the broad bands around 208 and 230 nm are due to the spin-allowed and spin-forbidden <I>f</I>-<I>d</I> transitions of Tb3+, respectively. In addition, the absence of the <I>f</I>-<I>d</I> transitions of Sm3+ and Dy3+ in the excitation spectra probably due to the photo-ionization effect. It is demonstrated that there are energy transfers from the BGBO host lattice to the luminescent activators depending on the activators.</P> <P><B>High lights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> VUV spectroscopic properties of rare-earth ions in Ba6Gd9B79O138 have been investigated. </LI> <LI> The CT bands of O2--Sm3+ and O2--Eu3+ charge transfer bands were observed at 202 and 249 nm, respectively. </LI> <LI> The <I>f</I>-<I>d</I> spin-allowed (208 nm) and spin-forbidden (230 nm) transitions of Tb3+ were observed. </LI> <LI> Energy transfer from the host to rare-earth activators has been demonstrated. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Positive Effects of Soy Isoflavone Food on Survival of Breast Cancer Patients in China

Zhang, Ya-Feng,Kang, Hong-Bin,Li, Bi-Li,Zhang, Rui-Ming Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.2

Aim: Soy foods are the major source of isoflavones, which are believed to play important roles in genesis of breast cancer and its progression. We here conducted a prospective study to evaluate the association of soy isoflavone food consumption with breast cancer prognosis. Methods: A prospective study was performed from January 2004 and January 2006 in China. Trained interviewers conducted face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire to collect information on dietary habits and potential confounding factors. The relative risk [hazard ratio (HR)] and 95% CI were calculated from the Cox regression model for all significant predictors from cancer diagnosis to the endpoint of the study (event). Results: After a median follow up of 52.1 months (range, 9-60 months), a total of 79 breast cancer related deaths were recorded in our study, risk being inversely associated with a high intake of soy isoflavone. With an average intake of soy isoflavone above 17.3 mg/day, the mortality of breast cancer can be reduced by about 38-36%. We also found the decreased breast cancer death with high soy protein intake, with a HR (95% CI) of 0.71 (0.52-0.98). Stratified analysis with reference to the ER status, further demonstrated a better prognosis of ER positive breast cancer with a high intake of soy isoflavone (HR 0.59, 0.40-0.93). Conclusion: Our study shows the soy food intake is associated with longer survival and low recurrence among breast cancer patients. A cohort study with a larger sample size and long term follow-up is now needed.
