        Parental Involvement and Home Language Practices by Non-native English-speaking Parents

        Parental involvement in family language planning and practice is crucial to children’s bilingual development. To foster children’s learning experience, some Korean non-native English-speaking parents have decided to speak English to their children, called ‘parental English education.’ This qualitative study takes a particularized look at parental involvement and home language activities in out-of-school contexts by focusing on how families use their two languages and create an English-friendly home environment. Along with semi-structured interview with parents, participant observation with audio/video recordings and ethnographic field notes were used to gather data. Thematic analysis of interview transcripts and video-recorded family conversations were adopted in this study to examine home language practices among family members and linguistic interactions during family activities. Data analysis was focused on parental involvement and self-created literacy practices in home domains using samples of home language practices of family members. Findings of this research suggest that bilingual parenting require consistent efforts and mutual cooperation among family members, especially if parents are not native speakers of the target language. Moreover, at least one parent must necessarily dedicate major time and efforts to create a language-friendly home environment while both parents must remain vigilant concerning the overall development of their children.

        Bilingual myths and challenges of bilingual parenting as nonnative English speakers

        As one of the solutions to the economic stratification of English education opportunities and resulting in inequalities, there is a newly emerging global trend of bilingual parenting in Korea called ‘maternal English education (Eommapyo yeong-eo)’. The purpose of this study is to examine challenges of Korean parents in practicing Korean–English bilingual home practices as nonnative speakers of English and micro- and macro-factors contributing to the difficulties in a monolingual context of Korea. To explore the challenges of the parents in bilingual parenting in a monolingual context, several semi-structured interviews were conducted for one Korean family. From the study, three main parental difficulties emerged: (1) lack of Korean parents’ English proficiency as nonnative English speakers, (2) prevalent myths about bilingualism and early bilingual education, and (3) spousal’s different perspectives toward children’s bilingual development. The findings suggest that bilingual parenting requires consistent familial cooperation, language-friendly home environment, and constant parental self-reflections on the whole process of bilingual parenting.

      • A Study on the Experience of the Integrated Infant Ballet Education

        Purpose: The objective of the study is to provide base materials required to invigorate an infant ballet program by exploring the experience of instructors and parents in the program which implemented the integrated teaching method. Method: the study conducted a qualitative research method and study participants included three instructors at an infant ballet professional institution that follows integrated teaching method based on referential selection and three parents who are participating in the program. In-depth interview, program lecture plan, instructor handbook, materials used in class and music CD were collected as research materials and the collected materials were analyzed with inductive domain analysis. Result: Firstly, teachers and parents had concerns and fears, and expectations for the new curriculum and teaching methods. The research participants who faced difficulties in general infant ballet programs were seeking for a more suitable ballet program for their children and came to know about the integrated infant ballet program. Secondly, infant toddlers, through ballet program, discovered the joys of ballet. Teaching methods that consider the characteristics of the developmental stages of children, teaching methods through storytelling, utilizing a variety of teaching methods helped infants experience a variety of arts teaching methods that helped to cause an interest in ballet. Thirdly, through the program, the children took a new interest on ballet. Infant toddlers, by continuously participate in the infant ballet integration program came to have interest in ballet and helped them determine their future course. Fourthly, integrated infant ballet program promoted holistic growth and development of infants and they experienced a variety of changes. Fifthly, the direction in which to move forward could be divided into the three categories: programs, instructors, learning environment. Program development that applies various education methods and ballet education that takes into consideration individual``s level of learning should be given. It is suggested that childhood ballet training also requires an integrated program that can be sustained. Professional instructor training program that enhances quality and competence of lecturer is required and in order to proceed with quality classes, the number of training hours and students has to be adjusted and place for education and vocational facilities should be expanded. In addition, active promotion of program has to occur and through increasing awareness of integrated infant ballet program for dance leaders and parents, more infants should be encouraged to participate in the program. Conclusion: The infant ballet program with the implementation of integrated teaching method has its significance in contributing to popularization of ballet education through helping instructors and parents have new recognition towards ballet education. Also, teaching contents and methods reflecting features of infant development helped children pro-actively participate in ballet education by stimulating their interests. It can be said it had positive impact from the aspect of holistic human development since the program increased persistency of ballet education.

      • Self-Reflection of Pre-service English Teachers on Microteaching Experiences

        This study attempts to explore pre-service teachers’ perceptions of English teaching practices and the challenges of being nonnative English-speaking teachers in their microteaching experiences. Twenty- two pre-service EFL teachers at a university in South Korea participated in a microteaching process in which they created lesson plans, conducted and video-recorded their lessons, watched their microteaching performances, and wrote reflective journal reports on their experiences to obtain the perceptions of their lesson planning and microteaching experiences. The thematic analysis of the data was conducted, and three main themes emerged: 1) struggles in creating a lesson plan based on the communicative approach, 2) challenges of being a nonnative speaker aspiring to be a qualified English teacher, and 3) strategies to deal with unexpected situations in the classroom due to a lack of pedagogical experience. The results suggest that pre-service teachers should be given enough teaching opportunities to become accustomed to classroom situations. The findings of this study imply the significant role of practicum programs and teaching opportunities in helping pre-service teachers bridge the gaps between their beliefs and classroom performances in improving teachers’ professional development.

        유도포탄 저속 회전 시 안정성 분석

        본 논문에서는 비선형 모델 시뮬레이션을 통해 저속 회전 중인 유도포탄의 비행 모습을 확인하고 외란으로써 여러 가지 방향과 크기의 돌풍을 작용하여 유도포탄의 비행 안정성을 분석한 방법과 결과를 소개한다. 돌풍은 3m/s, 7m/s, 10m/s, 15m/s 네 가지의 속력을 가지고 26가지의 방향에서 탄도 정점 부근부터 작용하도록 설정하였다. 초당 1회전 및 3회전으로 회전하는 경우에 대해 총 208회의 시뮬레이션을 수행한 결과를 분석하였다. 초당 3회전으로 회전할 때는 탄체가 전복되지 않았지만, 초당 1회전으로 회전할 때는 7m/s 이상의 돌풍이 작용할 때 비행 후반부에 탄체가 전복되는 경우가 발견되었다. 탄체 비행 방향 반대쪽으로 작용하여 비행 방향 대기속도를 증가하는 돌풍은 해로운 영향을 주지 않았다. 탄체전복은 모두 탄체가 하강하는 후반부에 발생하였으며, 탄도 정점 부근에서는 자세가 크게 진동하거나 탄체가 전복되지 않았다. This paper presents methods and results of nonlinear simulations for a guided munition for verifying stability at slow spin. The munition is launched by an artillery and it deploys the rear fins to reduce its spin. While the spin speed command is set to 1 rps and 3 rps, wind gusts of 3m/s, 7m/s, 10m/s, and 15m/s in amplitude, and 26 different directions were generated as disturbance for each simulation run. Whereas the munition with the spin speed of 3 rps didn’t flip, that with 1-rps spin flipped under some gusts. However, the gusts which increase airspeed in the flight direction didn’t introduce harmful effect. Most importantly, all the flips of the munition was observed near the end of the simulation where the munition is going down. No problem was observed near the summit of trajectory.

        학생들을 위한 다문화 교육: 한국의 한 초등학교의 흑인영어교사의 내러티브 경험을 중심으로

        연구의 목적은 한 초등학교 영어 교사의 내러티브를 통해 한국에 살고 있는 아프리카계 미국인 여성의 티칭 경험을 통해 인종, 민족, 문화적 동질성을 중시하는 한국 사회에서 어린 학생들을 위한 다문화 교육에 대한 시사점을 탐구하는 것이다. 이를 위해 한국 초등학교에서 원어민 영어 교사로 아이들에게 영어와 문화를 가르친 그녀의 경험이 담긴 유투브 동영상 블로그(V-log)를 분석하였다. 참여자의 내러티브 경험을 분석한 결과 세 가지 주요 주제가 도출되었다. 첫째, 문화적 다양성에 노출될 기회가 거의 없는 한국 어린이들을 이해하고 국가 및 인종별 문화적 차이에 대한 수업에 적극적으로 참여시키는 것에 있어서 교수자 역할의 중요성; 둘째, 인간의 다양성을 학생들에게 실제로 수업시간에 보여주고 설명할 뿐만 아니라 학생들이 스스로 다문화 개념에 대한 토론의 기회를 제공해 줄 수 있는 흑인 영어 교사로써의 중요한 역할; 마지막으로 한국인들이 미의 기준에 대해 가지고 있는 선입견과 고정관념에 대한 의문을 제기하고 다른 문화와 인간의 다양성에 대한 가치를 부여할 수 있는 의식개선의 필요성에 대한 시도의 중요성 등이다. This study aimed to examine the experience of African-American female teachers living in Korea through the lens of one elementary English teacher’s narrative, and the implications with regard to multicultural education for children in a society that claims racial, ethnic, and cultural homogeneity. Data comprised the teacher’s spontaneously generated video blogs on YouTube that describe her experiences and critical incidents while serving as a native-speaking English teacher in a Korean elementary school. Thematic analysis of the data produced three themes: the importance of understanding young Korean children, who have not been exposed to cultural diversity, and engaging them positively in lessons on cultural differences; the significant role of the Black teacher, who could exemplify as well as explain human diversity and support children’s discussion of multicultural concepts among themselves; and the need to help young learners question narrow conceptions of beauty, and build appreciative attitudes toward different cultures and human diversity.

        「애러비」 단편 소설을 활용한 고등학교 영어수업의 개발 및 적용 사례 연구

        This study aims to investigate how Korean EFL students in a second year high school English class perceived literature-based instruction using the English short story “Araby,” chosen because of its linguistic accessibility and plot reflecting matters of interest to adolescents. Data included a class survey, a focus group interview with five students, and the teacher’s reflections on teaching the plan and further suggestions. The result indicated that students thought learning language through a short story was very effective for improving their creativity, motivation, and intercultural knowledge. At the same time, the students complained about the discrepancy between such innovative classroom activities and the high stakes college entrance English exam, for which they were under pressure to prepare. They thought that the assessment system should be changed to one that evaluates students’ thinking and maintains their motivation. Based on these results, implications are discussed and some suggestions are made for teachers who are planning to teach literature in their high school English classes. (Pukyong National University)

        폭기 및 폐순환 역삼투 공정을 이용한 소규모 수도시설 개선에 관한 연구

        목적 : 본 연구에서는 자연 방사성물질, 질산성 질소, 불소 처리가 필요한 소규모 마을 상수도 시설을 개선하기 위하여 폭기 및 폐순환 방식의 역삼투(CCRO) 공정을 조합한 수처리 시스템을 도입하였으며, 도입 설비의 수처리 효율 및 블렌딩 효율을 평가하고자 하였다. 방법 : 원수 및 각 단위공정들의 처리수 수질을 분석하여 주요 처리대상 오염물질 및 그 외 이온성 물질에 대한 제거율을 평가하였다. 또한, RO 처리수의 혼합비율에 따른 폐순환 방식의 역삼투(CCRO) 공정 설비가 갖는 운영적 특성 및 혼합비율 평가를 통해 소규모 수도시설에 대한 운영 효율을 검증하였다. 결과 및 토의 : 원수에 포함된 라돈은 2시간의 폭기를 통해 최대 86%, 역삼투 공정을 통해 우라늄 98.9%, 질산성질소 85.5%, 불소 82.8%가 제거되었다. 그 외 이온성 물질의 경우에는 평균적으로 80% 이상이 제거되었다. 아울러, RO 처리수 혼합비율을 75% 까지 높일수록 정수 수질이 좋아지는 장점이 있지만, 높은 여과유량(1.8 m³/hr)으로 인해 CCRO 운영상 고압(7.6 bar) 운전이 필요하여 상대적으로 높은 SEC(0.27 kWh/m³)를 확인할 수 있었다. 결론 : 폭기 및 RO 공정을 조합한 정수처리 시스템 도입으로 주요 처리대상 오염물질들이 효과적으로 제거됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 국내 첫 실용화 사례인 폐순환 방식의 역삼투(CCRO) 설비의 안정적인 운영 및 처리효율을 확인 할 수 있었다. 폭기 및 RO 처리수의 혼합을 통해 고품질 수돗물 생산이 가능하였으며, 고농도 오염물질 유입시에도 먹는물 수질기준을 만족할 수 있을 것으로 예상한다. Objectives : A water treatment system, combining aeration and reverse osmosis (RO) processes, was introduced to improve water supply facilities in a small village where additional water treatment was required due to high concentrations of natural radioactive substances, nitrate nitrogen, and fluoride. In this study, CCRO(Closed-circuit reverse osmosis) was first introduced for commercial use in Korea. With this system, we evaluated its water treatment efficiency and effectiveness of blending the aerated water and RO permeate for improved waterworks in rural areas. Methods : The removal rate of major pollutants and other ionic substances was evaluated by analyzing the water quality of raw water and unit processes. In addition, the operational efficiency of a small-scale water supply facility was verified and optimized by evaluating a change in operational characteristics depending on the blending ratio of the treated waters by aeration and CCRO processes. Results and Discussion : Up to 86% of the radon contained in raw water was removed by the aeration process within 2 hours, and 98.9% of uranium, 85.5% of nitrate nitrogen, and 82.8% of fluoride were removed by the RO process. In the case of other ionic substances, more than 80% was removed on average by the RO process. The higher blending ratio of RO permeate up to 75% resulted in the better quality of the final treated water. However, since requiring the high flux and pressure (at 1.8 m³/hr and 7.6 bar, respectively), CCRO operation resulted in a relatively high specific power consumption at 0.27 kWh/m³. Conclusion : In this study, we found that the major contaminants (natural radioactive substances, nitrate nitrogen, and fluoride) were effectively removed by the water treatment system wherein the aeration and CCRO processes were combined. In particular, it was confirmed for the first time in Korea that the stable operation and water treatment efficiency of the CCRO process was satisfactory for commercial purposes. It could produce high-quality tap water through the blending of waters treated by aeration and CCRO, expecting that meeting drinking-water quality standards would be attainable even when raw water contains high-concentration pollutants.
