        The present study was conducted to know the antioxidative effect of Green tea on the lipid in chicken patties. Green tea is known to have diverse physiological functions including cardiotonic function, diuretic function, detoxicating function, sterilization function, antiphlogistic function, and the suppressive effect of food poising. Accordingly, the addition of Green tea powder is mostly appropriate for being used to processed food. With a view to project the storage stability and the storage life prolongation of chicken meat, we gained the following results after reviewing the storage stability and the effect on the antioxidant according to the addition of Green tea powder during storage of chicken patties for 15days at 5℃ or -5℃. 1. The Effect of the antioxidant on the lipid of chicken patties was increased according to the addition of Green tea powder. 2. The Effect of the antioxidant on the lipid of chicken patties was not especially changed in TBA value according to the addition of Green tea powder 1.0% and Na-Nitrite 50ppm, 100ppm, and 150ppm especially. 3. The addition of Green tea powder demonstrated the best effect of suppressing the TBA value at a lower temperature(-5℃)

      • 농촌지역의 생활폐기물 발생 특성 : 경북지역을 중심으로 Detailed Kyeongbuk Area

        This study was carried out to investigate the generation and physico-chemical composition of solid wastes in the Kyeongbuk area. As a result, the generation rate of municipal solid wastes(MSWs) in the Kyeongbuk area have been lower('96 : 43,757ton/day → '01 : 42,384ton/day), but recyclable wastes of them have been higher ('96 : 10,592ton/day →'01 : 12,828ton/day). The annual generation rate of MSWs in the country was 0.96kg in 1996, 0.92kg in 2001, respectively, it has maintained below 1.0kg, but it was 1.03kg in 1996, 0.94kg in 2001 in Kyeangbuk area, respectively. In MSWs, food wastes in the country and the Kyeongbuk area are 8,510kg and 493kg, and separation rate of food waste are 37.8% and 59.4%, respectively. Totally the generation rate of MSWs was decreased, but recyclable products of MSWs was increased. Three components, heating value, elements analysis in 2001 was similer to 1996's results.

        Anti-obesity effects of <i>Clausena excavata</i> in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P> <I>Clausena excavata</I> (<I>C. excavata</I>) has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of abdominal pain, enteritis, dysentery, and malaria. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of a 50% ethanol extract of <I>C. excavata</I> (ECE) on weight loss, adipocyte size, and obesity-related biochemical parameters in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. After 6 weeks of HFD + ECE administration, HFD-induced total fat, subcutaneous fat, and visceral fat were evaluated by micro-computed tomography. The serum levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TCH), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were evaluated with a biochemical analyzer, and leptin and adiponectin levels in the serum were assessed via enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Moreover, adipocyte size and lipid formation in the liver were examined. We found that weight gain, epididymal fat pad weight, adipocyte size, and lipid formation were markedly attenuated in the livers of HFD-induced obese mice treated with ECE. Furthermore, TG, TCH, and leptin decreased in the serum, whereas adiponectin increased. In conclusion, our data show that ECE has potent anti-obesity activity <I>in vivo</I> and support the development of ECE as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of obesity.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        A Case of Pseudoisodicentric Chromosome 18q Detected at Prenatal Diagnosis

        <P>Although trisomy 18 (Edwards' syndrome) or the terminal deletion syndromes of 18p and 18q have been occasionally detected, pseudoisodicentric chromosome 18 is a very rare constitutional chromosomal abnormality. We describe a case of pseudoisodicentric chromosome 18q without mosaicism, which was confirmed from fetal cells in the amniotic fluid used for prenatal diagnosis of multiple congenital anomalies. A 23-yr-old pregnant woman was suspected of having a fetal anomaly at 18(+3) weeks gestation. In sonography, the fetus showed multiple anomalies: bilateral overt ventriculomegaly in the brain, ventricular septal defect and valve anomaly in the heart, bilateral club foot, polydactyly, meningocele, and a single umbilical artery. The pregnancy was terminated and a conventional G-banded chromosome study was performed using amniotic fluid. Twenty metaphase cells among the cultured amniocytes showed a 46,XX,psu idic(18)(q22). Consequently, the fetus had partial trisomy (18pter-->q22) and partial monosomy (18q22-->qter). Both parents were confirmed to have a normal karyotype.</P>

        Expressions of Matrix Metalloproteinase-7 and -9 and their Prognostic Significances in Rectal Cancer

        Purpose: The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of proteolytic enzymes. MMPs are known to be involved in tumor invasion, and several have been implicated in tumor prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significances of the expressions of MMP-7 and -9 in rectal cancer.Materials and Methods: The tumor tissues of 87 patients with stage II or III rectal carcinoma that underwent potentially curative resection followed by postoperativeadjuvant chemoradiation and 5-fluorouracil based chemotherapy, were investigated immunohistochemically using monoclonal antibodies against MMP-7 and MMP-9. Clinical information, including tumor grades, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, and disease-free survival and overall survival were evaluated with respect to the expressions of MMP-7 and -9.Results: Median follow-up duration was 53.2 months, and median patient age was 55±11 years (range 32∼75).MMP-7 expression in tumor tissue was found to besignificantly correlated with the presence of nodal metastasis (p=0.029), whilst MMP-9 expression correlated with depth of tumor invasion (p=0.019). No relationships were found between the expressions of MMP-7 or -9 and age, sex, tumor size, tumor grade, or CEA level. Univariate analysis showed that MMP-7 expression was associated with poor 5-year overall survival (12.8 months vs. 65.3 months, p=0.0405). Multivariate analysis confirmed that MMP-7 was independently associated with an adverse outcome (Relative risk: 1.415, p=0.027). However, MMP-9 expression was not found to be related to clinical outcome.Conclusion: MMP-7 expression in tumor tissue is associated with lymph node metastasis and a poor 5-year overall survival in rectal cancer patients.         Trapping and A4-A4 end-to-side anastomosis for the treatment of a ruptured A3 fusiform aneurysm: Potential risk of in-situ bypass

        The treatment of complicated anterior cerebral artery aneurysms remains challenging. Here, the authors describe a case of ruptured complicated A3 aneurysm, which was treated with trapping and in-situ bypass. A 47-year-old man presented to the emergency department with severe headache and vomiting. Computed tomography illustrated acute intracerebral hemorrhage in the right frontal lobe. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) confirmed a ruptured fusiform A3 aneurysm with lobulation and a daughter sac. Trapping of the ruptured fusiform A3 aneurysm and distal end-toside A4 anastomosis was performed. DSA on postoperative day 7 showed mild vasospasm to the afferent artery. However, 2 months later, DSA demonstrated that the antegrade flow through the anastomosis site had recovered. Thus, surgeons should be aware of the possibility of postsurgical vasospasm of anastomosed arteries, especially in cases of ruptured aneurysms.

      • <i>Trigonostemon reidioides</i> modulates endothelial cell proliferation, migration and tube formation via downregulation of the Akt signaling pathway

        <P><I>Trigonostemon reidi`oides</I> (TR) is used as a Thai traditional medicine for the treatment of drug addiction, asthma, food poisoning, constipation and snake bites. The present study investigated the effects and molecular mechanisms of the ethanolic extract of TR (ETR) on mitogen-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) responses, proliferation, adhesion, migration and tube formation. ETR treatment inhibited mitogen-induced HUVEC proliferation by downregulation of cell cycle-associated proteins, including cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases, which induced retinoblastoma protein hypophosphorylation. The present study also demonstrated that ETR treatment suppressed mitogen-induced HUVEC adhesion, migration, invasion and tube formation, and that these anti-angiogenic activities were mediated by inactivation of mitogen-induced Akt and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, but not of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, p70 ribosomal S6 kinase or MMP-9. Collectively, the results of the present study suggested pharmacological functions and molecular mechanisms of ETR in regulating endothelial cell fates, and supported further evaluation and development of ETR as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment and prevention of angiogenesis-associated diseases, including cancer.</P>

        <P>Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is known to be an essential cofactor for the aromatic amino acid hydroxylases, which are involved in the production of neurotransmitters, and for nitric oxide (NO) synthase. In the present study, we report that sepiapterin, the more stable form of the BH4 precursor, modulates ovarian cancer cell proliferation and migration by NO-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Sepiapterin induction of cell proliferation and migration in SKOV-3 cells is accompanied by ERK, Akt and p70S6K activation. These stimulatory effects of sepiapterin are reversed by pretreatment with NO synthase inhibitor. We also show that sepiapterin significantly inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A)-stimulated cell proliferation and migration. Pretreatment with NO synthase inhibitor does not alter the ability of sepiapterin to inhibit VEGF-A-induced cell proliferation and migration, indicating that the suppressive effects of sepiapterin on VEGF-A-induced responses are mediated by a NO-independent mechanism. Finally, we demonstrate that sepiapterin markedly suppresses VEGF-A-induced p70S6K phosphorylation and VEGFR-2 expression, resulting in inhibition of VEGF-A-induced cell proliferation and migration. Collectively, these findings represent a biphasic effect of sepiapterin on cellular fates, depending on the presence of growth factors, and support further development and evaluation of sepiapterin for the treatment of cancers overexpressing VEGFR-2.</P>
