Korean Loanwords in Jurchen and Manchu
( Vovin Alexander ) 한국알타이학회 2007 알타이학보 Vol.0 No.17
This article presents some additional evidence for the Korean loanwords in Jurchen and Manchu following up the author's earlier publications on the same topic (Vovin 2005, 2006). Most of the loanwords discussed in the article could have been borrowed into Jurchen or Manchu only from some variety of Old Korean. Their likeliest source is a variety of Old Korean spoken in Koguryo and/or Parhae kingdoms. Therefore, these loanwords present important evidence that Koguryo and/or Parhae, or at least their elites were Korean-speaking.
Borrowing of verbal roots across language family boundaries in the "Altaic" world
( Alexander Vovin ) 한국알타이학회 2014 알타이학보 Vol.0 No.24
The present paper demonstrates that borrowing of bare verbal roots ispossible across more than one language family boundary on the basis ofdetailed research into the history of MK k?l-, Ma. hala-, and Mo. qala- ‘tochange’. It establishes the directionality of the borrowing as MK kil- > Ma. hala- > Mo. qala-. In addition it provides further evidence for the existenceof the phonemic contrast between *l and *r in Proto- and Old Korean.

Manchu Shamanistic Prayers From Sergei Polevoi's Manuscript
VOVIN, ALEXANDER Academia Via Serica 2020 Acta Via Serica Vol.5 No.1
This article introduces the texts of Manchu shamanistic prayers recorded in a manuscript by Sergei A. Polevoi, a Russian and an American Sinologist from the first part of the twentieth century. The Manchu original text of these prayers (but not the Polevoi's variant) was recently published by Ye (2018), which, however lacks detailed linguistic analysis. Polevoi's texts are in the slightly outdated romanization of Manchu with no linguistic analysis, translation, and commentary that are provided below by the author. While this publication will be of minor interest to the specialists on Manchu shamanism, it would be important to linguists specializing in the Manchu and Tungusic languages and philology, as the text reflects in all probability the eighteenth century Manchu preserved in romanization, and, therefore priceless for the linguistic analysis.
