• Increased risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with rosacea: A nationwide retrospective cohort study

        ( Sungjun Choi Daein Choi ),( Seulggie Choi ),( Sang Min Park ),( Hyun-sun Yoon ) 대한피부과학회 2020 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.72 No.1

Background: There is emerging evidence that rosacea is associated with various systemic diseases. However, its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains controversial. Objectives: We aimed to investigate whether patients with rosacea are at increased risk of developing CVD. Methods: This retrospective cohort study from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort included patients with newly diagnosed rosacea (n=2,681) and age-, sex-, and index year-matched controls without rosacea (n=26,810) between 2003 and 2014. The primary outcome was subsequent CVD including coronary heart disease and stroke. Multivariable Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) for subsequent CVD adjusted for major risk factors of CVD. Results: Compared to controls, patients with rosacea were more likely to have more comorbidities and were less likely to smoke, consume alcohol, and exercise regularly. Rosacea patients displayed an increased risk for CVD (aHR 1.20, 95% CI 1.03-1.40) and coronary heart disease (aHR 1.29, 95% CI 1.05-1.60) compared to controls. The risk for stroke was not significantly increased (aHR 1.12, 95% CI 0.91-1.37). Conclusion: Patients with rosacea are more likely to develop subsequent CVD adjusted for major CVD risk factors.

      • Electrochemical behaviors of Li-argyrodite-based all-solid-state batteries under deep-freezing conditions

        Choi, Sungjun,Jeon, Minjae,Kim, Byung-Kook,Sang, Byoung-In,Kim, Hyoungchul The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Chemical communications Vol.54 No.100

We probe the electrochemical performance of Li-argyrodite-based all-solid-state batteries under deep-freezing conditions (−30 °C) using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The performance deterioration is mainly caused by the increased interfacial resistances of electrolyte and active materials resulting from the slow kinetics of Li-ion transport in solid materials at low temperatures.

      • Pervasive misclassification and misconception of study designs in Asian dermatology journals listed in science citation index-expanded

        ( Sungjun Choi ),( Hyun-sun Yoon ) 대한피부과학회 2020 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.72 No.1

Background: Misclassification of study designs of journals can hinder the readers from assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the study and evaluating the applicability of the study in the real-world setting. However, it seems that it is common for authors to neglect to classify the study design. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the classification of study designs and examine the common errors. Methods: Among Asian dermatology journals listed in the science citation index expanded from January 2018 to December 2018, we investigated discrepancies between author-reported and actual study designs. Design Algorithm for Medical Literature on Intervention (DAMI) was used to determine the actual study design. Results: Of the 177 papers analyzed, only 72 articles (40.7%) revealed their study design and among them, 23 articles (32.0%) showed discrepancies between the author-reported and the actual study designs. Case-control studies were the most commonly misclassified study designs by authors. Conclusion: There were considerable differences between the author-reported study design and the actual study design in Asian dermatology journals. Proper classification of study designs by the authors is essential to strengthen evidence-based medicine.

      • Leukemia cutis mimicking banal folliculitis of the face and upper torso

        ( Sungjun Choi ),( Soyun Cho ) 대한피부과학회 2019 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.71 No.1

Various skin findings can be observed in leukemia but leukemia cutis (LC) is rarely seen. LC, defined as the infiltration of leukemic cells into the skin, occurs more commonly in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), especially M4 and M5 variants. Multiple erythematous nodules, papules or plaques distributed on the extremities and trunk is the typical presentation. However, LC sometimes can masquerade as benign inflammatory skin diseases such as rosacea and contact dermatitis. We report a case of 83-year-old man with AML who presented with a month history of severely pruritic scaly erythematous patches and papules on the face and upper torso that clinically mimicked eczema and folliculitis, respectively. Skin biopsy from a facial papule revealed atypical lymphocytic infiltration in the superficial and deep dermis. On immunohistochemical stain, the tumor cells were positive for CD43 and myeloperoxidase, which confirm the diagnosis of LC. He refused chemotherapy and only received symptomatic treatment with oral and topical steroid, topical tacrolimus and oral anti-histamine. The lesions and symptoms partially resolved in a month. It should be noted that benign-looking skin lesions in a patient with hematologic malignancy may actually be associated with malignant cell infiltration. However benign the skin lesions may appear, the possibility of malignancy should be kept in mind when it comes to a patient with hematologic malignancy.

Flashlight Sintering Characteristics of the Inkjet-Printed Nanosized Copper Ink on an Auxiliary Heated Paper Substrate

Sungjun Choi,Yong-Rae Jang,Hak-Sung Kim,Caroline Sunyong Lee 한국정밀공학회 2024 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.11 No.2

The flashlight sintering characteristics of inkjet-printed nanosized copper ink on paper substrates with varying pattern widths and intervals were studied. The copper nano particles (CNPs) synthesized using vapor self-assembled multilayer (VSAM) method to prevent oxidation, were produced with ink and patterned on a paper substrate through inkjet printing. The width and interval of the Cu patterns were varied from 350 to 550 μm to investigate the flashlight sintering tendency. It was confirmed that the Cu pattern resistivity decreased as the width of the Cu pattern increased, with decreasing interval between the Cu patterns. For the Cu pattern with the largest width and narrowest interval, the lowest specific resistivity was 6.43 × 10–6 Ω∙m. For auxiliary heating at 80 °C, the lowest resistivity of the Cu pattern was 7.10 × 10–6 Ω∙m with improved adhesion to the substrate, and this resistivity was 6.2 times lower than that without auxiliary heating. The temperature gradient of the CNP pattern during the flashlight sintering process was predicted using custom made simulation program. Therefore, the experiments and simulations confirmed that the wider the width and the narrower the interval between patterns, the flashlight sintering characteristics improved through higher heat generation by minimizing heat spreading.

      • Kaposi’s varicelliform eruption after chemotherapy

        ( Sungjun Choi ),( Soo Ick Cho ),( Dong-wan Kim ),( Dong Hun Lee ) 대한피부과학회 2019 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.71 No.1

Kaposi’s varicelliform eruption (KVE) is a disseminated cutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection that usually appears in patients with preexisting skin diseases. When KVE occurs in a patient with eczema, particularly atopic dermatitis which is the most common case, it is called eczema herpeticum. KVE is characterized by disseminated monomorphic dome-shaped vesiculopustular eruptions, usually over the head and neck area. We describe a 61-year-old man without any history of skin diseases presenting a prickling erythematous maculopapular rash on the face and neck. The first diagnosis was drug eruption for his recent history of chemotherapy but it was changed to KVE after new punched-out lesions appeared, which was confirmed by Tzanc smear, punch biopsy, and vesicle fluid culture. Intravenous acyclovir and additional oral valacyclovir cured him and only post inflammatory hyperpigmentation left. The clinical practitioner should be aware that even patients without a current or past history of skin diseases may develop KVE after chemotherapy.

      • Cutaneous Mycobacterium massiliense infection at the site of prior herpes zoster infection in an immunosuppressed patient after long-term use of steroid

        ( Sungjun Choi ),( Soyun Cho ) 대한피부과학회 2019 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.71 No.1

The incidence of cutaneous non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) infection is growing as the number of invasive procedures on the skin and the use of immunosuppressants increase. We report a 45-year-old female with a history of vasculitis presenting zosteriform ulcers with violaceous borders and erythematous nodules on the left upper arm of 2 weeks’ duration without a history of trauma. Three months earlier she had herpes zoster infection in the identical area, and after the resolution of zoster lesions, firm subcutaneous nodules with dusky erythematous overlying surface developed in the same sites. Ten days after the eruption of herpes zoster, she complained of arthritis, neuropathy and tender nodules with dusky erythematous patches on the left lower leg. For suspected vasculitis, she received a high dose of steroid for 3 months at another hospital. Skin biopsy from a left arm nodule demonstrated septolobular panniculitis with marked neutrophilic infiltration in the subcutis and deep dermis. Ziehl-Neelsen stain and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for NTM from both the tissue biopsied and a swab from the ulcers produced positive findings. Mycobacterium massiliense was identified by culture. One week after her initial visit, she was admitted due to dyspnea, sputum and fever. All the symptom was from Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which eventually led her to death. The importance of judicious use of steroid can’t be overemphasized.

      • Quantitative Analysis of Microstructures and Reaction Interfaces on Composite Cathodes in All-Solid-State Batteries Using a Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Technique

        Choi, Sungjun,Jeon, Minjae,Ahn, Junsung,Jung, Wo Dum,Choi, Sung Min,Kim, Ji-Su,Lim, Jaemin,Jang, Yong-Jun,Jung, Hun-Gi,Lee, Jong-Ho,Sang, Byoung-In,Kim, Hyoungchul American Chemical Society 2018 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.10 No.28

The composite cathode of an all-solid-state battery composed of various solid-state components requires a dense microstructure and a highly percolated solid-state interface different from that of a conventional liquid-electrolyte-based Li-ion battery. Indeed, the preparation of such a system is particularly challenging. In this study, quantitative analyses of composite cathodes by three-dimensional reconstruction analysis were performed beyond the existing qualitative analysis, and their microstructures and reaction interfaces were successfully analyzed. Interestingly, various quantitative values of structure properties (such as the volume ratio, connectivity, tortuosity, and pore formation) associated with material optimization and process development were predicted, and they were found to result in limited electrochemical charge/discharge performances. We also verified that the effective two-phase boundaries were significantly suppressed to ∼23% of the total volume because of component dispersion and packing issues.
[FIG OMISSION]

      • Clinicopathological factors for the differential diagnosis and treatment outcomes of verruca plana: a study of biopsy-proven cases

        ( Sungjun Choi ),( Hyun-sun Yoon ) 대한피부과학회 2019 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.71 No.2

Background: It is sometimes difficult to discriminate verruca plana (VP) from seborrheic keratosis (SK) presenting multiple and tiny papules (VP-like SK). As VP and SK have different treatment strategies and prognoses, differentiation between VP and VP-like SK is important. Objectives: The objective of this study was to elucidate the clinicopathological differential characteristics between VP and VP-like SK and investigate the predictors associated with the treatment outcomes of VP. Methods: We retrospectively investigated patients who underwent skin biopsy for differentiating between VP and VP-like SK from 2013 to 2019. Results: Among 145 identified cases, 59.3% (n=86) had VP, and 40.7% (n=59) had VP-like SK. We revealed that the patients with VP were more likely to have skin-colored or pink and confluently distributed lesions larger than 3 mm and located on the extremities than those with VP-like SK. The predictors associated with the treatment success of VP were the presence of skin-colored or pink lesions and those located on the upper extremities and treatment with systemic retinoid combined with diphenylcyclopropenone or carbon dioxide laser. Conclusion: Our study proposed useful differential characteristics between VP and VP-like SK in a large number of biopsy-proven cases and strengthened proper management strategies for VP.
