Purpose: To evaluate renal function 1 year after radical nephrectomy (RN) for renal cell carcinoma, the preoperative predictors of postnephrectomy renal function were investigated by sex, and equations to predict the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 1 year after RN were developed. Materials and Methods: A total of 525 patients who underwent RN between May 2007 and August 2011 at Tohoku University Hospital and its affiliated hospitals were prospectively evaluated. Overall, 422 patients were analyzed in this study. Results: Independent preoperative factors associated with postnephrectomy renal function were different in males and females. Preoperative eGFR, age, tumor size, and body mass index (BMI) were independent factors in males, while tumor size and BMI were not independent factors in females. The equations developed to predict eGFR 1 year after RN were: Predicted eGFR in males (mL/min/1.73 m2)=27.99−(0.196×age)+(0.497×eGFR)+(0.744×tumor size)−(0.339×BMI); and predicted eGFR in females=44.57−(0.275×age)+(0.298×eGFR). The equations were validated in the validation dataset (R2=0.63, p<0.0001 and R2=0.31, p<0.0001, respectively). Conclusions: The developed equations by sex enable better prediction of eGFR 1 year after RN. The equations will be useful for preoperative patient counseling and selection of the type of surgical procedure in elective partial or RN cases.

The Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University, Japan, obtained the scholarship in "Short-Stay and Short-Visit scholarship programs(SS-SV programs)" for both German and Japanese students in 2011 and 2012. Our short-term student exchange programs proved that a short-term stay in a foreign country worked as an initiator for the students' interest and it strengthen their will to study further more in foreign countries.

We report about the international cooperative activities for the engineering education between a German University and a Japanese University. After the experiences for 15 years of cooperation, both in research and student exchange, we learned a lot about the differences between these two educational systems. This report summarizes the differences and the future perspective for the improvement of engineering education based on the understanding of the differences, including advantages and disadvantages, between two educational systems.

In 1996, the Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University, Japan entered an era of open student-exchange with Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany. Thus far, more than 50 of our students have devoted anywhere from three months, to an entire year of their courses, to collaborative efforts with fellow students, (-and some cases, the local citizenry) -in their native environment experiencing unfamiliar education systems and cultures.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors associated with initiation and adherence of osteoporosis medication from a patient perspective. Methods: A web-based survey was developed based on health behavior theories. Descriptive analyses were conducted for all survey items. Analyses in a structural equation modeling framework were conducted to identify factors associated with treatment initiation and adherence. Results: Five hundred forty-five women completed the questionnaire. A majority were currently receiving medications for osteoporosis (n ¼ 376, 69.0%) and 25.0% of these patients (n ¼ 94) were considered adherent to their treatment. Knowledge was strongly associated with osteoporosis treatment initiation (standard error [SE], 0.58). Greater knowledge of disease was associated with increased likelihood of initiating medication. Medication complexity (SE, 0.49) and perceived susceptibility to fracture and loss of independence (SE, 0.37) were also associated with initiation. Perceived barriers (SE, 0.85) such as inconvenience, lack of efficacy and financial burden were observed to be the greatest obstacle to adherence. The greater the perceived barriers, the less likely patients were to adhere to medication. Patients' perception of self-efficacy (SE, 0.37) also affected adherence. The greater the patient perception of ability to independently manage their medication, the more likely they were to adhere to the medication. Conclusions: Different factors were found to be associated with initiation and adherence of osteoporosis medication. Patient knowledge of their disease and the perception of barriers were found to be the most influential. Empowering patients with the knowledge to better understand their disease and decreasing the perception of barriers through education initiatives may be effective in improving patient outcomes. © 2017 The Korean Society of Osteoporosis.
