A Study of the Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui (兩景揆日儀) in the Joseon Dynasty

Lee, Yong Sam,Kim, Sang Hyuk,Mihn, Byeong-Hee The Korean Space Science Society 2015 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.32 No.1

The Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui (兩景揆日儀) is a kind of elevation sundial using three wooden plates. Sang-hyeok Lee (李尙爀, 1810~?) and Byeong-cheol Nam (南秉哲, 1817~1863) gave descriptions of this sundial and explained how to use it in their Gyu-il-go (揆日考) and Ui-gi-jip-seol (儀器輯說), respectively. According to Gyu-il-go (揆日考) there are two horizontal plates and two vertical plates that have lines of season and time. Subseasonal (節候) lines are engraved between seasonal (節氣) lines, subdividing the interval into three equal lines of Cho-hu (初候, early subseason), Jung-hu (中候, mid subseason) and Mal-hu (末候, late subseason); there are 13 seasonal lines for a year, thus resulting in 37 subseasonal lines; also, there are 12 double-hour (時辰) lines for a day engraved on these plates. The only remaining artifact of Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui was made in 1849 (the $15^{th}$ year of Heon-jong) and is kept at the Korea University Museum. We have compared and analyzed Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui and similar western sundials. Also, we have reviewed the scientific aspect of this artifact and built a replica. Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui is a new model enhanced from the miniaturization development in the early Joseon Dynasty and can be applied to the southern part of the tropic line through a structure change.

Fusion Length Requiring Spinopelvic Fixation in Lumbosacral Fusion with Anterior Column Support at L5–S1: Assessment of Fusion Status Using Computed Tomography

        Sung Cheol Park,Sangjun Park,Do-Hyung Lee,Jinew Seo,Jae Hyuk Yang,Min-Seok Kang,Yunjin Nam,Seung Woo Suh 대한정형외과학회 2024 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.16 No.1

Background: The lumbosacral (LS) junction has a higher nonunion rate than other lumbar segments, especially in long-level fusion. Nonunion at L5–S1 would result in low back pain, spinal imbalance, and poor surgical outcomes. Although anterior column support at L5–S1 has been recommended to prevent nonunion in long-level LS fusion, fusion length requiring additional spinopelvic fixation (SPF) in LS fusion with anterior column support at L5–S1 has not been evaluated thoroughly. This study aimed to determine the number of fused levels requiring SPF in LS fusion with anterior column support at L5–S1 by assessing the interbody fusion status using computed tomography (CT) depending on the fusion length. Methods: Patients who underwent instrumented LS fusion with L5–S1 interbody fusion without additional augmentation and CT > 1 year postoperatively were included. The fusion rates were assessed based on the number of fused segments. Patients were divided into two groups depending on the L5–S1 interbody fusion status: those with union vs. those with nonunion. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for LS junctional nonunion. Results: Fusion rates of L5–S1 interbody fusion were 94.9%, 90.3%, 80.0%, 50.0%, 52.6%, and 43.5% for fusion of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and ≥ 6 levels, respectively. The number of spinal levels fused ≥ 4 (p < 0.001), low preoperative bone mineral density (BMD; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.667; p = 0.035), and postoperative pelvic incidence (PI) – lumbar lordosis (LL) mismatch (aOR, 1.034; p = 0.040) were identified as significant risk factors for nonunion of L5–S1 interbody fusion according to the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusions: Exhibiting ≥ 4 fused spinal levels, low preoperative BMD, and large postoperative PI–LL mismatch were identified as independent risk factors for nonunion of anterior column support at L5–S1 in LS fusion without additional fixation. Therefore, SPF should be considered in LS fusion extending to or above L2 to prevent LS junctional nonunion.

        Sang-Hyuk Lee,Keonhee Lee 충청수학회 2005 충청수학회지 Vol.18 No.1

Using the iterative method, we derive an controller realization of the bilinear system, which is resulted from the system reformulation. We utilize Banach Fixed Point Theorem to support proposed controller, and the simulation results are also illustrated to verify usefulness of this technique.

      • Improvement in bending formability of rolled magnesium alloy through precompression and subsequent annealing

Lee, Jong Un,Kim, Sang-Hoon,Kim, Ye Jin,Park, Sung Hyuk Elsevier 2019 Journal of alloys and compounds Vol.787 No.-

Abstract

A remarkable improvement in the bending formability of a rolled magnesium alloy at room temperature is achieved through application of precompression and subsequent annealing. This combined treatment results in the formation of a new grain structure with two texture components whose basal poles are oriented nearly along the rolling direction and normal direction. The tensile deformation occurring in the outer region of the samples during bending is effectively accommodated by the activated {10–12} twinning and promoted basal slip, which consequently results in a significant improvement in the bending formability of the alloy.

Highlights

A rolled AZ31 alloy plate was subjected to precompression and subsequent annealing.

This combined treatment forms a new grain structure with two texture components.

The bendability at RT is significantly improved by the combined treatment.

It is attributed to the activation of {10–12} twinning in the outer region of samples.

The promotion of basal slip also contributes to the improved bendability.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

      • The characterization, selenylation and anti-inflammatory activity of pectic polysaccharides extracted from Ulmus pumila L.

Lee, Jin-Hye,Lee, Yun-Kyung,Choi, Yu-Ra,Park, Joon,Jung, Sung Keun,Chang, Yoon Hyuk Elsevier 2018 International journal of biological macromolecules Vol.111 No.-

Abstract

The specific objective of this study was to investigate characterization, selenylation, and anti-inflammatory activities of pectic polysaccharides extracted from Ulmus pumila L. (PPU). Four different monosaccharides were found in PPU, including galacturonic acid, galactose, rhamnose, and glucose. FT-IR spectra indicated that pectic polysaccharides were successfully extracted from Ulmus pumila L., and were probably low methoxyl pectin. GC-MS and NMR analysis of PPU suggested the major monosaccharide of PPU was α-1,4-linked galacturonic acid with α-1,2-linked rhamnose as the backbone and glucose or galactose residues as branches at C-3 and C-4 positions of rhamnose. Selenylation of PPU was synthesized by 0.2 and 0.4% of sodium selenites. Selenized-PPU (Se-PPU) inhibited LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells, and increasing selenium content enhanced anti-inflammatory properties of PPU. Therefore, Se-PPU can be used as a potential source of bioactive compounds for nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical applications.

Highlights

Pectic polysaccharides from Ulmus pumila L. were obtained by hot water extraction.

The molecular weight of PPU was higher than that of commercial pectin standard.

The backbone of PPU was composed of a →1,4-α-D-GalpA and α-1,2-α-L-Rhap backbone.

The selenium-bound polysaccharide was manufactured by selenylation modification.

Selenylation of PPU improved the anti-inflammatory activity.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

      • p-Coumaric acid stimulates longitudinal bone growth through increasing the serum production and expression levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 in rats

        Lee, Jong Hyuk,Chung, Yoon Hee,Kim, Ho Hyun,Bang, Joon Seok,Jung, Tae Woo,Park, Taekwang,Park, Jinwoo,Kim, Uiseok,Lee, Sung Hoon,Jeong, Ji Hoon Elsevier 2018 Biochemical and biophysical research communication Vol.505 No.4

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of p-coumaric acid on the longitudinal growth of the long bone in adolescent male rats. Teatment with p-coumaric acid significantly increased the tibial length and the height of each growth plate zone and the ratio of 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine-positive cells relative to total proliferative cells. Expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 and its receptor in the proliferative and hypertrophic zones, and serum levels of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 were significantly increased as well in the p-coumaric acid-treated group. Via increasing both the serum level of insulin-like growth factor 1 and its expression, p-coumaric acid could promote cell proliferation in growth plate zones. These results suggest that p-coumaric acid has the potential to increase height and may be a feasible alternative to growth hormone therapy.
