We report theoretical and experimental analyses on the pulse performance of an acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched intracavity frequency-doubled Nd : YAG laser with a linear resonator. For the properly designed linear resonator, a frequency-doubled laser beam with a short pulse width of 40 ns and an output power of 73 W is generated at a pulse repetition rate of 10 kHz and an input pump power of 476 W. The linear resonator is analyzed theoretically based on rate equations and is compared with the experimentally obtained frequency-doubled laser output power and pulse width.

We fabricated diode side-pumped Nd:YAG laser modules with an output power of 80 W per module and constructed a thermal birefringence compensated two-rod Nd:YAG laser resonator. The stability condition and the fundamental mode size of the resonator were analyzed by using a ray matrix method, and the utility of the second stable region (S2) located near the second unstable region (US2) was explained in relation to the laser output power and the M2 beam quality factor. In experiments, in comparison to a single laser module utilizing the rst stable region S1 we obtained a relatively high output power of 100 W with a small M2 beam quality factor of 5 by operating two laser modules in the stable region S2 near the US2. In a short cavity, we obtained a maximum laser output power of 164 W with an optical slope efficiency of 37.3 % and an M2 beam quality factor of 42.
