      • Analyzing the Push and Pull Factors Contributing to Participation in University Study Abroad Programs

        Michael Manning 한국문화정책학회 2015 문화정책 Vol.2 No.2

Most Korean literature depicts study abroad programs as an effective immersion-based method of language learning; however, little research has been conducted concerning the societal and economic roles that contribute to studying abroad. The purpose of this paper is to identify the push and pull factors that lead to Korean university student and American university student participation, and to determine why Korean students have a higher participation rate. Through the completion of a comprehensive literature review comparing educational culture, push-pull factors, and government policies, it is concluded that the job market in Korea acts as a major push factor enhancing the need for students to travel abroad for second language learning and cultural understanding. Furthermore, in comparison to American students, Korean students are more willing to invest in higher education or specialized program as a means of improving their socioeconomic status.

Attracting Domestic Students to Study Abroad Programs at Universities

( Michael Manning ),( Chad Anderson ) 인천대학교 사회과학연구원 2016 사회과학연구 Vol.8 No.-

Korea provides one of the largest populations of international students studying in the United States but has fewer international students studying in Korea than domestic students studying abroad. In contrast, higher education in the United States has become more of a priority for international students in recent years. However, as the number of international students studying in the United States has risen, domestic university students have not followed the same pace with roughly 1-2% of domestic students studying abroad in recent years. Recent literature shows that lack of interest is not the main deterrent for domestic students with financial concerns and postponement of graduation being reported as the main issues. The purpose of this study is to: 1) identify what administrators at universities in America and Korea are doing to recruit domestic students for study abroad programs, and 2) determine if the administrative policies of Korean universities are being or should be implemented by American universities to balance the ratio of incoming and outgoing study abroad program students. The administrative differences were analyzed through a series of interviews with International Studies and Program Coordinators from four American and four Korean universities. The interviews focused on the areas of professional training and experience, method of recruitment of domestic students for study abroad programs, and challenges involved in student recruitment. The results from the interviews generated a number of promising suggestions for how American and Korean universities can modify their programs. The discussion and conclusion include specific policy suggestions with implications.

      • Sports and Local Promotion

        Michael Manning(매닝 마이클) 한국문화정책학회 2016 문화정책 Vol.3 No.1

The 2015 President’s Cup was held in New Songdo City in October of 2015. This tournament represented the town’s first opportunity to host an international televised sporting event which offered the precious opportunity for the city to build upon its heavily promoted goals of obtaining international recognition. The aesthetic Songdo scenes and ubiquitous city attributes are features of a concept city model designed the Korean government for international exportation. This study researches the effective promotion of the city during the 2015 President’s Cup. Where past studies have focused on analyzing the airtime of city scapes during telecasts, on-air city references, and survey methods of analyzing visitor opinions, this study uses Google search engine data to analysis interest in the event, city, and other Songdo themes to identify the heightened level of interest in city using the world’s more widely utilized search engine as a research tool. This study concludes that through the hosting of this international sporting event interest in Songdo did increase; however, due to limitations with Google Trends as an academic tool the desired quantitative analysis was not achievable.

Analyzing Communication Methods between Korean Managers and Western Workers

( Michael Manning ) 인천대학교 사회과학연구원 2015 사회과학연구 Vol.6 No.-

The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of the strengths and weaknesses of managerial and communicative styles present in Korea through the eyes of Western workers. An identification of common managerial practices within Korea is analyzed in comparison to those that are present in Western countries. Using the research of Geert Hofstede and others, a comparison of national work cultures helps identify the underlying cultural factors that cause the differing expectations and behaviors of both managers and employees. By using this research to aid the framework of the study, a survey was constructed to (1) identify the role that gender of managers and workers plays in the employee’s level of happiness, (2) examine the impact that the level of English ability of Korean managers has in relation to the amount of workplace conflict with Western employees, and (3) identify the mode of communication being used by Korean managers with Western workers. The overarching goal of the study is to provide a guideline of communication methods that can be used to ensure cohesiveness for both Western workers and Korean management in the workplace.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Light Red Meranti Treated with Boron Preservatives

        Man Djun LEE,Ridge Wei Cheong TANG,Zeno MICHAEL,Miqdad KHAIRULMAINI,Azmi ROSLAN,Ahmad Faidzal KHODORI,Hazim SHARUDIN,Pui San LEE 한국목재공학회 2024 목재공학 Vol.52 No.3

This study investigates the influence of varying concentrations of boric acid (BA) preservative on the physical and mechanical properties of light red meranti (LRM) found in Sarawak. LRM or Shorea leprosula samples were treated with various concentrations of BA via the dip diffusion method using American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The physical property, particularly the retention rate and mechanical properties, bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), tensile and compression strength parallel to grain of impregnated and control samples were tested to determine the effects of BA preservative. The retention rate was found to increase with increasing BA concentration and higher surface area to volume ratio. The mechanical properties in terms of the MOE and tensile strength parallel to grain were found to be greater than those of the control samples, whereas the bending strength and tensile strength parallel to grain were lower. Amongst the results, only the retention rate and MOE showed significant interaction effects at 5% level of significance between all factors tested (samples size and BA concentration for retention rate and BA concentration for MOE).

      • A comparative study on the Functional Independence and Quality of Life (QoL) of Filipino elderly in Telehealth and Traditional Healthcare

        Michael Joseph S. Diño,MAN, RN, LPT,Irvin L. Ong,EdD, MHPEd, LPT ASCONS 2019 IJBSA Vol.1 No.1

Background/Objectives: Telehealth through videoconferencing has the potential to improve the lives of the elderly. Unfortunately, little is known on its health benefits in the physical and quality of life dimensions among seniors. The aim of this paper is to compare videoconferencing as a mode of telehealth with traditional healthcare delivery in the contexts of functional independence and Quality of Life (QoL) measures using a non-equivalent control group before-after quasi experimental design. Methods/Statistical analysis: One-hundred forty seniors from a rural area were purposively selected and distributed to the telehealth (n=82) and traditional (n=58) groups. SF-8 and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) were used to gather the needed data from the participants before and after exposure to the interventions. Findings: Results of t-tests indicate significant improvement in QoL of the two groups of subjects on both telehealth and traditional groups, while FIM measures exhibited no significant change among the telehealth group. Improvements/Applications: On the whole, study findings promote a more personal delivery of healthcare among the elderly, and challenges the health practitioners and policy makers to recognize the pragmatic worth of and improve telehealth as a complementary healthcare tool for traditional consultation in enhancing QoL among seniors. Impliedly, more researches with extended number of subjects and locale is needed to come up with a more generalizable result.

      • Increased Efficiency in Electronic Markets: Liquidity vs. Informed Trading

Michael Williams,Yiu man Tse People&Global Business Association 2009 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.14 No.1

This study examines market efficiency differences between open outcry and electronic exchanges under varying liquidity conditions for the FTSE-100 Index Futures Contract. In line with previous literature, this study finds that liquidity provision and market efficiency have increased on the electronic exchange. Unlike previous literature, this study finds that private information provision decreased between exchange types. Under standard liquidity conditions, clear efficiency differences exist between the open outcry and electronic regimes. However, by employing a liquidity adjustment procedure, this study finds no difference in efficiency between the two exchange types. Based on previous literature, this study concludes that higher efficiency in electronic exchanges is due to enhanced liquidity provision from informed traders and not private information provision.

Siegesbeckia Orientalis L. Extract Attenuates Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction, Systemic Inflammation, and Neuroinflammation

        John Man Tak Chu,Wei Xiong,Ke Gang Linghu,Yan Liu,Yan Zhang,Guan Ding Zhao,Michael G. Irwin,Gordon Tin Chun Wong,Hua Yu 한국뇌신경과학회 2018 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.27 No.6

A proportion of patients experience acute or even prolonged cognitive impairment after surgery, a condition known as postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). It is characterized by impairment in different cognitive domains and neuroinflammation has been implicated as one of the inciting factors as strategies targeting inflammation tend to improve cognitive performance. Siegesbeckia Orientails L. (S. Orientails) is a common Chinese medicinal herb used for managing chronic inflammatory diseases. We investigated if pretreatment with S. Orientails before surgery confers any neuroprotective effects in postoperative animals in terms of reducing inflammation and mitigating cognitive impairment. Three-month-old male C57BL/6N mice were fed different doses of S. Orientails extract for 14 days before they underwent a laparotomy. After cognitive testing they were sacrificed on postoperative day (POD) 3. Our results showed that animals with extract pretreatment demonstrated memory improvement in a dose-dependent manner compared with control. Further, evidence for the attenuation of systemic and neuroinflammation was found in the pretreated animals, along with the inhibition of inflammatory pathways and significantly reduced tau phosphorylation in the hippocampus. Taken together, these results demonstrated a neuroprotective effect of S. Orientails in postoperative animals, indicating a therapeutic potential of S. Orientails in minimizing POCD and the possibility of utilizing this traditional Chinese medicine perioperatively.
