Kidney protective potential of lactoferrin: pharmacological insights and therapeutic advances

        Md,Sarwar Zahan,Kazi Ahsan Ahmed,Akhi Moni,Alessandra Sinopoli,Hunjoo Ha,Md Jamal Uddin 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 2022 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.26 No.1

Kidney disease is becoming a global public health issue. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) have serious adverse health outcomes. However, there is no effective therapy to treat these diseases. Lactoferrin (LF), a multi-functional glycoprotein, is protective against various pathophysiological conditions in various disease models. LF shows protective effects against AKI and CKD. LF reduces markers related to inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and kidney fibrosis, and induces autophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis in the kidney. Although there are no clinical trials of LF to treat kidney disease, several clinical trials and studies on LF-based drug development are ongoing. In this review, we discussed the possible kidney protective mechanisms of LF, as well as the pharmacological and therapeutic advances. The evidence suggests that LF may become a potent pharmacological agent to treat kidney diseases.

Development of early flowering, short life-spanned jute (Corchorus spp.) mutant via ethyl methane sulfonate mutagenesis

        Hossen Quazi Md. Mosaddeque,Rahman S. M. Badier,Rahman Md. Nazibur,Sarker Muhammad Delwar Hossain,Moniruzzaman Md.,Tareq Md. Zablul,Sadat Md. Abu,Arafat Kazi Md. Yasin,Jahan Md. Sarwar,Haque Md. Samiu 한국작물학회 2022 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.25 No.4

Polyethene is a global environmental threat, whereas jute (Corchorus spp.) fber is biodegradable, eco-friendly and can be used as a substitute for polyethene. Jute is a short-day plant and cultivated in March to July in Indian subcontinent for bast fber production. This season-bound cultivation nature hampers continuous supply of bast fber in the industry. In addition, its long cultivation period creates difculties to accommodate other high-value crops. To address these issues, a short life span (early fowering) jute genotype is extremely felt in jute growing areas of the world. But, unfortunately such variety has not been developed yet through both conventional and biotechnological approach. Accordingly, we adopted chemical mutagenesis by establishing LD50 (Lethal Dose) of EMS (Ethyl Methane Sulfonate) at 150 mM with 4h’ incubation for Capsularis jute seed. A novel mutant was found named—Komola, which showed a shorter lifespan than its ancestor by fowering at 70 days instead of 120 days. In addition, the mutant's stem and petiole was coppery-red instead of green. Molecular analysis revealed four SNPs in PMIR1 (Plastid Movement Impaired 1 Related 1) and two clade deletions in ELF3 (Early Flowering 3) genes from stable M4 generation. Histochemical and biochemical analyses explained this genotype’s lower content of lignin. This mutant could be used as future breeding material for the development of year-round cultivable jute genotype along with ofer up accommodation of other high-value agricultural crops in cropping pattern with a good source of year-round supply of bast fber to the industry

Effect of Citrus macroptera Fruit Pulp Juice on Alteration of Caspase Pathway Rendering Anti-Proliferative Activity against Ehrlich’s Ascites Carcinoma in Mice

        Md. Mahmudul Hasan,Md. Shihabul Islam,Kazi Md. Faisal Hoque,Ariful Haque,Md Abu Reza 한국독성학회 2019 Toxicological Research Vol.35 No.3

Citrus macroptera (Rutaceae) has long been used in folk medicine in Bangladesh. Considering the folkloric context, this study was aimed to scrutinize anti-proliferative activity of C. macroptera fruit pulp juice (CMFPJ) against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma (EAC). The anti-proliferative capacity of CMFPJ was investigated and confirmed primarily using MTT assay. In vivo anti-proliferative aptitude of CMFPJ was investigated with 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day intraperitoneal (i.p.) treatment. Anti-proliferative efficacy of CMFPJ was assessed based on EAC growth inhibition. CMFPJ inhibited EAC growth in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. And the percentages of in vivo EAC growth inhibition were 19.53, 49.2, and 68.9% at 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg CMFPJ respectively. CMFPJ significantly induced expression of apoptosis regulatory genes caspase-8, caspase-9, cytochrome-c, and caspase-3. This considerable anti-cancer activity was perhaps due to combinatorial effect of lectin, polyphenols, and flavonoids present in CMFPJ.

In-vivo antiproliferative activity of Morus latifolia leaf and bark extracts against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma

        Md. Shihabul Islam,Chowdhury Arif Jahangir,Md. Sifat Rahi,Md. Mahmudul Hasan,Salek Ahmed Sajib,Kazi Md. Faisal Hoque,Md Abu Reza 한국독성학회 2020 Toxicological Research Vol.36 No.1

Cancer is the second death causing disease all over the world and until today 100 different types of cancer have been identified whose treatment methods consist of serious side effects on human body. To reduce the frequency of adverse effects of cancer treatment, nowadays plant derived natural components are getting priority. The plant Morus latifolia is widely available in northern part of Bangladesh. The earlier researches suggested that popular varieties of some Morus sp. like Morus alba, Morus indica etc. have good anti-proliferative activity. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the anti-proliferative activity of leaf and bark extracts of M. latifolia against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma (EAC) in vivo. The leaf and bark extracts of M. latifolia were used in several bioassays including Brine shrimp lethality test, hemagglutination activity test, antioxidant activity test, and cell growth inhibition test. Besides, fluorescence microscopy was performed to study apoptotic features in EAC cells, and molecular analysis like real-time PCR were also conducted. The results of Brine shrimp lethality test, hemagglutination activity test, and antioxidant activity assay supported the cell growth inhibition capability of leaf and bark extracts which was confirmed by in vivo cell growth inhibition bioassay. Moreover, the experimental extracts were able to induce cell apoptotis through altering the expression pattern of Bcl-2 and Bax genes. All of the results of this study suggest that several noble compounds are present in M. latifolia plant extracts which are capable for healing cancer cells.

Ecotourism Carrying Capacity and the Potentiality of the Safari Park of Bangladesh

Kazi Mohammad Masum,Abdullah Al Mamun,Zahed Mohammad Malekur Rahman,Md. Motlubur Rahman,Md. Shah Newaz,Mohammad Redowan 강원대학교 산림과학연구소 2013 Journal of Forest Science Vol.29 No.4

The study was undertaken to assess the tourist’s carrying capacity and to explore ecotourism potential of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park, the only safari park of Bangladesh. Carrying capacity was assessed both from physical and social aspect. On the other hand, 250 visitors were interviewed with semi structured questionnaire for ecotourism prospect evaluation along with some secondary data. The total daily-allowed visit was 17,300 with rotation coefficient of 3.46. Maximum daily average numbers of tourists were relatively below the physical carrying capacity of the Park (5,000). The social carrying capacity was 4.38 persons per day. As there are different categories of visitors, their choice of encounters and number of expected encounters also varied. Each year, the total tourist’s number varied significantly (p≤0.05). That proved the safari park had immense tourist prospect. 85 percent visitors were from lower and middle class family as entrance fees and other fees inside were very cheap in relation to other private amusement place. The ecological perspective of the park will remain unaltered if the carrying capacities of the area are followed with sustainability. Therefore, it is the proper time for taking appropriate decision.

Diversity and distribution of amphibians in central and northwest Bangladesh, with an updated checklist for the country

        Md. Mizanur Rahman,Lotanna Micah Nneji,Md Mosharrof Hossain,Kanto Nishikawa,Kazi Ahsan Habib 국립중앙과학관 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Vol.15 No.2

Conservation of amphibians relies on the knowledge of the diversity and distribution patterns. To date, there is a lack of information on the diversity and distribution patterns of amphibians in some regions of Bangladesh, particularly the Northwest and Central areas. Thus, to contribute to the present knowledge on amphibians of Bangladesh, we surveyed nine districts from the Northwest and Central regions of Bangladesh between 2017 and 2019 and evaluated the patterns of species richness and habitat preference. Furthermore, we compiled a list of the amphibian species for Bangladesh and summarized the conservation status. The results revealed the presence of 19 amphibian species from the Northwest and Central regions, with range extensions for five species. Diversity analyses showed that the agricultural field had the highest number of species. An updated inventory of the amphibians of Bangladesh shows the presence of at least 62 species belonging to two orders, eight families, and 34 genera. Of the amphibians in Bangladesh, 26.0% are placed under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)-threatened category, 43.0% least concern, 8.0% data deficient, and 23.0% are not accessed by the IUCN. Our study improved knowledge on the diversity and distribution of amphibians in Bangladesh as well as offered recommendations for improved conservation policies.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-noceceptive action of the crude extracts of Costus specious on rodents

Md. Ashraful Alam,Nusrat Subhan,Md. Abdul Awal,Md. Shohidul Alam,Kazi Akramudaulla 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2008 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.8 No.3

The effect of alcoholic extracts of Costus specious (Family: Zingiberaceae) was evaluated in experimental models of pain and inflammation. Oral administration of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg of C. specious extracts were used for the above study. Crude extracts of C. specious (300 mg/kg dose) showed maximum time needed for the response against thermal stimuli (7.242 ± 0.532 s) which is comparable to diclofenac sodium (8.471 ± 0.257 s) in the hot plate test. The MPH (Maximum Possible Analgesia) has been found to be 14.285 for 300 mg/kg dose of the crude extract while the MPH for diclofenac was 15.857 after 60 min of administration in the hot tail-flick method. The crude extract at 300 and 200 mg/kg doses showed significant reduction in acetic acid induced writhings in mice with a maximum effect of 59.661% reduction at 300 mg/kg dose which is comparable to standard diclofenac sodium (73.4%). Alcoholic extract of C. specious showed significant inhibition in serotonin and egg albumin induced hind paw oedema in rats at 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg of the crude extracts respectively (Serotonin induced edema 44.22; 53.75; 58.51%; egg albumin induced edema - 41.317; 53.892; 59.880% inhibition after 4 h respectively). The antiinflammatory effects showed by the extract were comparable to that of standard indomethacin 5 mg/kg (Serotonin induced edema 77.56%; egg albumin induced edema 77.844% inhibition after 4 h). These results suggest that the extract possesses both the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity on mice and rat model. An Offline Electronic Payment System Based on an Untraceable Blind Signature Scheme

( Md. Abdullah Al Rahat Kutubi ),( Kazi Md. Rokibul Alam ),( Rafaf Tahsin ),( G. G. Md Nawaz Ali ),( Peter Han Joo Chong ),( Yasuhiko Morimoto ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2017 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.11 No.5

This paper proposes a new offline electronic payment (e-payment) system that satisfies the major security requirements of e-payment, i.e. anonymity, unlinkability, unforgeability, double spending control, conditional traceability, and fraud prevention. The central idea is the use of Hwang et al.`s RSA-based untraceable blind signature (BS), which disables the link between the e-coin and its owner and ensures the anonymity of both the customer and the merchant. It attaches an expiration, a deposit and the transaction dates to each e-coin in order to manage the database of the bank effectively, to correctly calculate the interest on the e-coin and to aid arbitration if a dishonest customer attempts to double-spend the coin. It also ensures the anonymity of the customer as long as the coin is spent legitimately. Only when a fraudulent e-coin transaction is detected can the bank, with the help of the central authority (a trusted entity), determine the identity of the dishonest customer. The system is referred to as offline since the bank does not need to be concurrently involved in transactions between a customer and a merchant. Finally, analyses of the performance of the prototype and the primary security requirements of the proposed system are also presented.

        Md. Abdul Aziz,Ahasanul Karim,Md. Mehedi Hassan Masum,Kazi Kader Newaz 대한환경공학회 2021 대한환경공학회지 Vol.43 No.4

Objectives : Noise pollution in Chittagong City of Bangladesh is a big concern because of huge population growth and urbanization. The objective of the study was to evaluate and mapping the noise levels in twelve locations of this city at different periods. Methods : Noise level data were collected at various locations by a precision grade sound level meter and the noise pollution parameters (Lmin, LAeq,2h and Lmax) were calculated. Furthermore, the noise pollution maps of Chittagong City were developed using geographical information system to address the locations which are prone to the environmental hazards. Results and discussion : The study revealed that the average noise levels were 64.6, 76.9, and 75.5 ㏈(A) for residential, commercial and silence zones, respectively. The interpolated noise maps showed that noise environment of this city was unsatisfactory, especially, in the areas of New Market, Nasirabad, and Bawa School & College were exposed to high noise pollutions. The afternoon and evening periods were experiencing higher noise pollution in the commercial and silence zones than the morning period of the day. Conclusions : The study suggests that the noise levels are above the acceptable limit and hence urgent measures should be taken into consideration to control the level of noise pollution in the city.
