Osteopetrosis is a rare skeletal disease of unknown etiology. Osteomyelitic changes in the jaw bones are frequently seen in this disease, especially in the mandible and may follow upon tooth extractioin. A case is reported of a 31-year-old male who was seen because of intraorally exposed bony spicule and chronic dull pain. Radiographic and haematological investigations led to the diagnosis of osteopertrosis with osteomyelitis. The striking radiologic findings were pathologic mandibular fracture and generalized skeletal thickening. The present case could be grouped under the benign form, type II osteopetrosis. With the conservative and minimally invasive modes of treatment including administration of penicillin G sodium, curettage and closed reduction, we could successfully manage the osteomyelitis and pathologic fracture associated osteopetrosis.

Background and Objectives: We previously reported that, compared with standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation(S-CPR), better hemodynamic effects could be achieved by simultaneous sterno-thoracic cardiopulmonary resuscitation(SST-CPR) in which we compressed the sternum and constricted the thorax circumferentially during the systolic period by using a device. This study was designed to assess whether SST-CPR, compared with S-CPR, improve the survival rate of dogs with cardiac arrest. Subjects and methods: Twenty-five mongrel dogs(19∼31㎏) were enrolled in this study. After four minutes of ventricular fibrillation induced by an AC current, animals were randomized to resuscitate with either S-CPR(n=13) or SST-CPR(n=12). Epinephrine(1 ㎎) was injected into the right atrium every three minutes after the beginning of CPR. Defibrillation was attempted after 6 minutes of CPR. Standard advanced cardiac life support was started if defibrillation was not successful. Results: SST-CPR resulted in significantly(p<0.001) higher systolic arterial pressure(91±47 vs 47±24 ㎜ Hg), diastolic pressure(43±24 vs 17±10 ㎜ Hg), coronary perfusion pressure(35±25 vs 13±9㎜ Hg), and end tidal CO2 tension(9±4 vs 3±2 ㎜ Hg). Two of 13 animals(15 %) resuscitated with S-CPR and six of 12 animals(50%) resuscitated with SST-CPR survived until 12 hours after cardiac arrest(p<0.05). Donclusion: SST-CPR, compared with S-CPR, improves the short-term survival rate in canine cardiac arrest.

We developed the educational purpose mobile application, named "Wild Flowers of Bukhansan National Park (version 1.0)", aiming for easy identification of wild flowers for students and visitors in the park. When visitors find a flower or part of plant in the park, visitors can search for its name utilizing the pictures and characters provided in their own smartphone mobile devices or tablet PCs. The application provides pictures of wild flowers in the park and character-based searching system based on 12 diagnostic features (e.g., growth form, leaf arrangement, flower symmetry, petal color, petal number, sepal number, etc). We adopted the complete floristic survey of Chung and Lee (1962) and added species that we confirmed their distribution in the park during the development of this application. In summary, number of vascular plants in this park was estimated to be 428 taxa including 100 families, 280 genera, 327 species, 1 subspecies, 50 varieties, and 5 formas. We provided a total of 588 pictures representing 358 taxa and each taxon includes multiple pictures in many cases. Included identification quizzes can be an efficient educational tool as well as fun activity for students and visitors who are learning plant species in Korea. Our next step will include GPS function in the application for indicating visitor's location and for providing previously reported sites of the species that we interested in the map of the park. The future application which includes GPS function will be a valuable tool for the monitoring of rare plants, plant researches related to the climate changes, etc. We currently provide Korean iPhone version only, and English version and both of android versions will be serviced soon.
A genome-wide association study of a coronary artery disease risk variant.

<P>Although over 30 common genetic susceptibility loci have been identified to be independently associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), genetic risk variants reported to date explain only a small fraction of heritability. To identify novel susceptibility variants for CAD and confirm those previously identified in European population, GWAS and a replication study were performed in the Koreans and Japanese. In the discovery stage, we genotyped 2123 cases and 3591 controls with 521 786 SNPs using the Affymetrix SNP Array 6.0 chips in Korean. In the replication, direct genotyping was performed using 3052 cases and 4976 controls from the KItaNagoya Genome study of Japan with 14 selected SNPs. To maximize the coverage of the genome, imputation was performed based on 1000 Genome JPT+CHB and 5.1 million SNPs were retained. CAD association was replicated for three GWAS-identified loci (1p13.3/SORT1 (rs599839), 9p21.3/CDKN2A/2B (rs4977574), and 11q22.3/ PDGFD (rs974819)) in Koreans. From GWAS and a replication, SNP rs3782889 showed a strong association (combined P=3.95 10(-14)), although the association of SNP rs3782889 doesn't remain statistically significant after adjusting for SNP rs11066015 (proxy SNP with BRAP (r(2)=1)). But new possible CAD-associated variant was observed for rs9508025 (FLT1), even though its statistical significance did marginally reach at the genome-wide a significance level (combined P=6.07 10(-7)). This study shows that three CAD susceptibility loci, which were previously identified in European can be directly replicated in Koreans and also provides additional evidences implicating suggestive loci as risk variants for CAD in East Asian.</P>

J Clin Periodontol 2009; 37: 305–311. doi: 10.1111/j.1600-051X.2009.01522.x</I>.</P><P>Abstract</P><P>Aim</P><P>The aim of the present study was to investigate bone regeneration following ex vivo bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) gene delivery using human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) in rat calvarial defects.</P><P>Materials and Methods</P><P>An 8 mm craniotomy defect was created in Sprague–Dawley rats. The animals were divided into four groups: (1) non-grafted group, the defect was left empty; (2) collagen matrix group, the defect was filled with collagen matrix only; (3) HGF group, the defect was filled with non-transduced HGFs on collagen matrix; (4) BMP-2/HGF group, the defect was filled with BMP-2 gene-transduced HGFs on collagen matrix. Animals were sacrificed at 2 and 4 weeks after surgery, and micro-computed tomographic and histologic observations were performed.</P><P>Results</P><P>The BMP-2/HGF group showed promoted osseous healing of calvarial defects, as compared with the other groups. At both 2 and 4 weeks, regenerated bone area was significantly greater in the BMP-2/HGF group than the other three groups. Quite a few number of transplanted HGFs were observed within the regenerated bone tissues.</P><P>Conclusions</P><P>The results of this study suggest that ex vivo BMP-2 gene delivery induces prominent bone regeneration in vivo and HGFs may be useful as target cells for ex vivo gene therapy.</P>
Hybrid형 인공 고관절 전 치환술의 5-7년 추시 결과 (MS-30 대퇴 스템과 Omnifit 대퇴 스템의 비교)

Forty patients(forty-six hips), who underwent hybrid total hip arthroplasties with a cemented femoral component and a non-cemented acetabular component between February, 1991 to September, 1993, were reviewed for a minimum follow-up of five years. Rerised case was excluded. The purpose of this study was to analyze the intermediate-term results and to compare clinically and radiographically between two groups of the patients: one group which used smooth-surfaced Omnifit femoral stem was 11 hips and the other group which used matte surfaced MS-30 femoral stem was 35 hips. The average age of these patients at the time of the operation was 57.4 years. The operation had been performed by a single surgeon(J-M Lee) except 1 hip using transgluteal approach. Clinically, the average Harris hip score was 94 points in the group used Omnifit femoral stem and 93 in the group used MS-30 femoral stem. In the group used Omnifit femoral stem, one hip was revised for a osteolysis, but no additional hip was definitely loosened in radiographic criteria. And in the group used MS-30 femoral stem, two hips were revised for one aseptic loosening and one infec- tion and three additional hips were definitely loosened in radiographic criteria. But on the acetabular side, one hip used Omnifit femoral stem showed severe wear, but in the group used MS-30 femoral stem didnt showed any definite loosening or severe wear. We supposed that the high rate of failure in the group used MS-30 femoral stem, which was contemporary designed, was due to a matte finished surface in tapered design. However, we need to compare polished stem with matte-surface stem for the true correct answer.
Perovskite 형 산화물 촉매에 의한 자동차 배기가스 정화에 관한 연구

자동차 배기가스에 포함되어 있는 유해가스를 처리하기 위하여 페롭스카이트형 산화물을 monolith에 담지하여 연속식 흐름 장치에서 혼합가스의 활성 비교와 이산화황에 의한 피독 실험을 행하였다. 촉매는 고온 소성법보다 구연산법에 의해 제조된 촉매가 비표면적이 컸으며 담지에 있어서도 구연산법이 분산 부착법이나 냉동 건조법보다 담지가 잘 되는 것으로 나타났다. 혼합가스의 반응에 있어서 일산화탄소의 산화반응이 프로필렌에 우선하였고, 산화질소의 환원반응은 환원제인 일산화탄소의 산화반응이 진행됨에 따라 급격히 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 혼합가스의 촉매 황성에 있어서는 B 이온이 Co인 경우가 Mn보다 우수하였으며, Sr으로 A 이온을 부분적으로 치환한 경우 활성이 좋아졌고, 촉매에 약 5000ppm의 백금을 첨가시켜 상업적인 백금 촉매에 필적하는 활성 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이산화황에 의한 피독에 의해 촉매의 활성은 현저하게 감소하였고 백금이나 팔라듐을 첨가시킴으로써 활성저하를 상당히 둔화시킬 수 있었으며 팔라듐의 첨가가 더 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 피독에 의한 활성저하는 이산화황이 sulfate 상태로 촉매 표면에 부착하기 때문이라는 것을 확인하였다. 헤테로폴리산계 촉매를 고온에서 소성한 복합 금속 산화물의 경우 이산화황의 피독에 대해 상당한 저항을 보이는 것이 확인되었다. Noble metal catalysts have been widely used for the treatment of exhaust gases from automobile. In this experiment, however, perovskite-type oxides(ABO₃) were tested for the treatment of mixed gas consisting of propylene, CO, NO, O₂ and N₂. The deactivation of the catalysts due to SO₂ adsorption was investigated. Cordierite monolith was used as the support of the catalysts. It was found that the surface area of the catalysts prepared by the amorphous citrate method was larger than those obtained from other methods. The oxidation rate of CO was faster than that of propylene, and the conversion of NO decreased rapidly, as the conversion of CO approached to 100%. As a B site ion, Co showed higher activity than Mn. The substitution of Sr into the A site enhanced the activity, and the activity of the catalyst containing Pt (5000 ppm) was better than the commercial Pt on γ-A1₂O₃. The activity of the catalysts was severely depressed by the poisoning of SO₂. The additions of Pt or Pd to perovskite enhanced some resistance to the SO₂ poisoning. The mixed oxides made from the heteropoly-acids showed high activities for the CO oxidation and the excellent resistance to the poisoning of SO₂.
