      • Consumer Preferences in Developing and Developed Country Markets and the Impact on EU and New Zealand

( Caroline Saunders ),( Meike Guenther ),( Peter Tait ),( John Saunders ),( Paul Dalziel ),( Paul Rutherford ) 한국EU학회 2015 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.13 No.2

Understanding international consumer preferences and attitudes towards food is important for countries like New Zealand that depend heavily on food exports. New Zealand’s export focus has changed over the last few decades from almost all exports going to Europe, to more into Asian markets, in particular to China. It is therefore important that different cultures and preferences in these markets are considered and understood. This paper will present results from a pilot survey in six countries (UK, Korea, Japan, India, China and Indonesia) focusing on how consumers in different markets respond to different attributes and on how New Zealand producers can communicate those using smart technology and digital media in overseas markets. The results highlight the importance of food safety and health foods in these markets. In general, developing countries valued attributes more than developed countries. This included environmental quality in food which was also seen as key for underpinning food safety. In addition, the study examined the potential impact of varying levels of premiums for food attributes on there turns to the agricultural sectors of the EU (European Union-28) and New Zealand using the partial equilibrium Lincoln Trade and Environment Model (LTEM). Trade model projections showed that the potential impact on the revenue for agriculture was important.

Intensive land-based production of red and green macroalgae for human consumption in the Pacific Northwest: an evaluation of seasonal growth, yield, nutritional composition, and contaminant levels

        Bradley A. Gadberry,John Colt,Desmond Maynard,Diane C. Boratyn,Ken Webb,Ronald B. Johnson,Gary W. Saunders,Richard H. Boyer 한국조류학회I 2018 ALGAE Vol.33 No.1

Turkish towel (Chondracanthus exasperatus), Pacific dulse (Palmaria mollis, also known as Red ribbon seaweed), and sea lettuce (Ulva spp.) were cultivated in a land-based intensive culture system at the Manchester Research Station, USA from August 2013 to September 2014. Macroalgae were grown in tumble-aerated tanks, harvested bimonthly for seasonal growth calculations, and analyzed for protein, lipid, ash, and amino acid content. Growth rate of all three species exhibited a similar pattern, with the highest specific growth rates occurring during the summer months (Turkish towel: 7.8%, Pacific dulse: 8.2%, and sea lettuce: 6.2%). Growth of all three species was lowest around winter solstice; with negative growth only observed in sea lettuce. On a dry weight basis significant differences in protein content existed between the three species with highest values for sea lettuce (29.5 ± 1.4%). Lipid content varied between species (0.95-2.78%) with significantly higher lipid observed in sea lettuce (0.58-4.82%). No significant differences were detected on a seasonal basis among each species. Essential amino acids accounted for 43 ± 0.9 to 47 ± 1.2% of total amino acids with Turkish towel having the highest value. Turkish towel had a significantly higher taurine level (0.82 ± 0.27) than the other macroalgae. The levels of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals were low. The estimated annual product of the three species ranged from 50- to 70-mt dry weight ha-1 y-1, significantly higher than conventional crops. Land-based culture of these species can produce year-round harvest, consistent product quality, and low contaminant levels.

Does Drinking Culture Induce Problematic Alcohol Use? Evidence From a Military Representative Survey in Korea

        Lee Seung-Yup,Lee Hae Kook,Yoon Chang-gyo,Hankaram Jeon,Saunders John B. 대한신경정신의학회 2022 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.19 No.11

Objective To examine the relationship between problematic alcohol use and contributing factors among Korean professional soldiers. Methods Cross-sectional data of 2,646 participants collected by 2014 military-wide representative health survey was analyzed. Multivariate logistic models were used to identify contributing factors for problematic alcohol use. Problematic alcohol use was defined by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) questionnaire as hazardous (8≤ AUDIT <16) or harmful (AUDIT ≥16). Tolerant drinking culture was measured by the Drinking Culture Questionnaire. Results Hazardous alcohol use was found in 56.9% of men and 46.8% of women and harmful use in a further 16.2% of men and 5.4% of women. In univariate analyses, perceived health status, subjective sleep quality, depression, and drinking culture were related to the outcome variable. In multivariate models controlling covariates, the likelihood of problematic alcohol use was significantly increased by man gender, being single, current/past smoking, and tolerant/permissive drinking culture. In those with harmful alcohol consumption, tolerant drinking culture was a particularly powerful influence. Conclusion A substantial proportion of Korean professional soldiers demonstrated problematic alcohol use. Tolerant drinking culture was shown to have a significant influence on problematic alcohol use in the military. Our findings underscore the need for public health policies that address this drinking culture to mitigate negative health consequences and preserve the forces’ combat readiness.
