Demotivating factors in learning English for elementary school students

        Lee,Jihye,Lee,Chung-Hyun 한국초등영어교육학회 2011 초등영어교육 Vol.17 No.1

This study aims to identify the demotivating factors in learning English for Korean 5th and 6th graders and determine the differences in the demotivating factors according to students’ gender and English proficiency. For this study, a 57-item questionnaire was constructed based on eight demotivating factors: teachers’ personality and teaching style, class environment, reduced motivation and interest, characteristics of class, difficulty of learning English, negative attitudes toward second language (L2), attitude of group members, and grading and test score. The questionnaire was completed by 170 students, and seven students were then interviewed. The first finding was that reduced motivation and interest, difficulty of learning English, and characteristics of class were the most demotivating factors in respective order. The second finding showed that male students tended to have more negative attitudes toward L2. The third finding was that the lower their proficiency levels were, the more the students attributed their demotivation to reduced motivation and interest, difficulty of learning English, negative attitudes toward L2, attitude of group members, and grading and test score factors. Based on the results, it is suggested that through identifying learners’ demotivating factors, teachers can reduce the causes of demotivation using various methods applicable for the respective demotivating factors.

SSP 기후변화 시나리오에 따른 농업용 저수지 홍수조절능력 분석

        김지혜 ( Kim¸ Jihye ),곽지혜 ( Kwak¸ Jihye ),황순호 ( Hwang¸ Soonho ),전상민 ( Jun¸ Sang Min ),이성학 ( Lee¸ Sunghack ),이재남 ( Lee¸ Jae Nam ),강문성 ( Kang¸ Moon Seong ) 한국농공학회 2021 한국농공학회논문집 Vol.63 No.5

The objective of this study was to evaluate the flood control capacity of the agricultural reservoir based on state-of-the-art climate change scenario - SSP (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways). 18 agricultural reservoirs were selected as the study sites, and future rainfall data based on SSP scenario provided by CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6) was applied to analyze the impact of climate change. The frequency analysis module, the rainfallrunoff module, the reservoir operation module, and their linkage system were built and applied to simulate probable rainfall, maximum inflow, maximum outflow, and maximum water level of the reservoirs. And the maximum values were compared with the design values, such as design flood of reservoirs, design flood of direct downstream, and top of dam elevation, respectively. According to whether or not the maximum values exceed each design value, cases were divided into eight categories; I-O-H, I-O, I-H, I, O-H, O, H, X. Probable rainfall (200-yr frequency, 12-h duration) for observed data (1973∼2020) was a maximum of 445.2 mm and increased to 619.1∼1,359.7 mm in the future (2011∼2100). For the present, 61.1% of the reservoirs corresponded to I-O, which means the reservoirs have sufficient capacity to discharge large inflow; however, there is a risk of overflowing downstream due to excessive outflow. For the future, six reservoirs (Idong, Baekgok, Yedang, Tapjung, Naju, Jangsung) were changed from I-O to I-O-H, which means inflow increases beyond the discharge capacity due to climate change, and there is a risk of collapse due to dam overflow.

      • Shape-controlled fabrication of nanopatterned samarium-doped cerium oxide thin films using ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography

        Lee, Jihye,Cheon, Sohee,Choi, Jun-Hyuk,Choi, Dae-Geun,Jung, Joo-Yun,Jeon, Sohee,Lee, Eung-sug,Jeong, Jun-Ho Elsevier 2017 THIN SOLID FILMS - Vol.636 No.-

Abstract

A shape-controlled method for the nanoscale patterning of cerium oxide thin films was demonstrated in this work. An ultraviolet-curable precursor-containing resin was newly developed for samarium-doped and undoped cerium oxide films, and ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography was employed for the nanopatterning. Various nanostructure shapes such as lines, circular pillars, and circular holes were fabricated, and a minimum feature width of 45nm was realized by patterning and subsequently shrinking the structures. The fabricated film was confirmed to be cerium dioxide, both undoped and doped with Sm. The effects of the annealing temperature on the crystallinity of the nanostructure and the controllability of the doping ratio were investigated. We believe that this work will provide a new path for preparing nanostructured cerium oxide for energy applications and a basic platform for analyzing the relationship between the structure and performance of size-controlled nanostructures.

Highlights

A shape-controlled method for top-down nanopatterning was demonstrated.

A UV-curable resin containing precursors was developed.

Ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography was employed for the nanopatterning.

A minimum feature width of 45nm was realized by patterning and annealing.

Undoped and samarium-doped CeO2 thin films were confirmed by XRD and EDX.

Patchouli Alcohol, a Compound from Pogostemon cablin, Inhibits Obesity

        Jihye Lee,Byungwhi Kong,Seong-Ho Lee 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.3

Obesity predisposes people to a variety of chronic metabolic diseases. Identification of natural factors that prevent the development of obesity is likely to be the most successful means of ameliorating the current obesity epidemic. Patchouli alcohol is a sesquiterpene alcohol found in Pogostemon cablin and possesses health benefit activities. This study was designed to examine if patchouli alcohol affects adipogenesis, and investigates the underlying mechanisms whereby patchouli alcohol exerts antiobesity effect. 3T3-L1 adipocytes were differentiated with treatment of different concentrations of patchouli alcohol. An in vivo study was performed to test the effect of patchouli alcohol gavage on a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. Treatment of patchouli alcohol reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes in a dose-dependent manner without toxicity. Regarding mechanism, treatment of patchouli alcohol reduced expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) and CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein-alpha (C/EBPα) and increased expression of total and active β-catenin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Oral gavage of patchouli alcohol led to a significant reduction of body weight and fat accumulation in the mice fed with HFD. Transcriptome analysis indicates that smad7 is most highly activated gene in patchouli alcohol-treated 3T3-L1 cells. Patchouli alcohol possesses health benefit effect through inhibiting adipogenesis and fat tissue development.

Optimal Combination of VNTR Typing for Discrimination of Isolated Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Korea

Lee, Jihye,Kang, Heeyoon,Kim, Sarang,Yoo, Heekyung,Kim, Hee Jin,Park, Young Kil The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory 2014 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.76 No.2

Background: Variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) typing is a promising method to discriminate the Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates in molecular epidemiology. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal VNTR combinations for discriminating isolated M. tuberculosis strains in Korea. Methods: A total of 317 clinical isolates collected throughout Korea were genotyped by using the IS6110 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and then analysed for the number of VNTR copies from 32 VNTR loci. Results: The results of discriminatory power according to diverse combinations were as follows: 25 clusters in 83 strains were yielded from the internationally standardized 15 VNTR loci (Hunter-Gaston discriminatory index [HGDI], 0.9958), 25 clusters in 65 strains by using IS6110 RFLP (HGDI, 0.9977), 14 clusters in 32 strains in 12 hyper-variable VNTR loci (HGDI, 0.9995), 6 clusters in 13 strains in 32 VNTR loci (HDGI, 0.9998), and 7 clusters in 14 strains of both the 12 hyper-variable VNTR and IS6110 RFLP (HDGI, 0.9999). Conclusion: The combination of 12 hyper-variable VNTR typing can be an effective tool for genotyping Korean M. tuberculosis isolates where the Beijing strains are predominant.

      • Thermo-compressive transfer printing for facile alignment and robust device integration of nanowires.

        Lee, Won Seok,Won, Sejeong,Park, Jeunghee,Lee, Jihye,Park, Inkyu RSC Pub 2012 Nanoscale Vol.4 No.11

Controlled alignment and mechanically robust bonding between nanowires (NWs) and electrodes are essential requirements for reliable operation of functional NW-based electronic devices. In this work, we developed a novel process for the alignment and bonding between NWs and metal electrodes by using thermo-compressive transfer printing. In this process, bottom-up synthesized NWs were aligned in parallel by shear loading onto the intermediate substrate and then finally transferred onto the target substrate with low melting temperature metal electrodes. In particular, multi-layer (e.g. Cr/Au/In/Au and Cr/Cu/In/Au) metal electrodes are softened at low temperatures (below 100 °C) and facilitate submergence of aligned NWs into the surface of electrodes at a moderate pressure (???5 bar). By using this thermo-compressive transfer printing process, robust electrical and mechanical contact between NWs and metal electrodes can be realized. This method is believed to be very useful for the large-area fabrication of NW-based electrical devices with improved mechanical robustness, electrical contact resistance, and reliability.

Multifunctional photoreactive inorganic cages for three-dimensional holographic data storage.

        Lee, Seungwoo,Jeong, Yong-Cheol,Lee, Jihye,Park, Jung-Ki Optical Society of America 2009 Optics letters Vol.34 No.20

We demonstrate a holographic photopolymer based on multifunctional photoreactive inorganic cages, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). It is shown that a second photopolymerizable monomer, POSS, for the photopolymer, contributes to significantly enhance photosensitivity as well as refractive index modulation (Deltan). We also found that during the formation of holographic gratings, polymerization of POSS could effectively suppress volume shrinkage of photopolymer resin, owing to its filler-strengthening effect of inorganic cages accompanied with interpenetrating effect.
