Current status and outlook on the clinical translation of biodegradable metals
Han, Hyung-Seop,Loffredo, Sergio,Jun, Indong,Edwards, James,Kim, Yu-Chan,Seok, Hyun-Kwang,Witte, Frank,Mantovani, Diego,Glyn-Jones, Sion Elsevier 2019 Materials today Vol.23 No.-

Abstract

During the last decade, translational research on biodegradable metallic materials has shown the feasibility of these novel materials for use in the fields of cardiology and orthopedics. Implants prepared with biodegradable metals are significantly stronger than their polymer counterparts, and there is now convincing evidence demonstrating that these materials fully biodegrade in vivo, thus reducing the need for secondary surgery. Clinical trials of such novel materials show significant potential, with the prospect of a paradigm shift in the way musculoskeletal and cardiovascular conditions are treated. This work provides an overview of the rapidly advancing technology of biodegradable metals, as well as defining some challenges in the application of these new biodegradable materials in the medical field.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

A new approach to deal with sensor errors in structural controls with MR damper
Han Wang,Luyu Li,Gangbing Song,James B. Dabney,Thomas L. Harman 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.2
As commonly known, sensor errors and faulty signals may potentially lead structures in vibration to catastrophic failures. This paper presents a new approach to deal with sensor errors/faults in vibration control of structures by using the Fault detection and isolation (FDI) technique. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, a space truss structure with semi-active devices such as Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper is used as an example. To address the problem, a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) based fixed-order H∞ FDI filter is introduced and designed. Modeling errors are treated as uncertainties in the FDI filter design to verify the robustness of the proposed FDI filter. Furthermore, an innovative Fuzzy Fault Tolerant Controller (FFTC) has been developed for this space truss structure model to preserve the pre-specified performance in the presence of sensor errors or faults. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed FDI filter is capable of detecting and isolating sensor errors/faults and actuator faults e.g., accelerometers and MR dampers, and the proposed FFTC can maintain the structural vibration suppression in faulty conditions.
Han, Eun Ok,Kim, Jae Rok,Choi, Yoon Seok,Lochhead, James The Korean Association for Radiation Protection 2015 방사선방어학회지 Vol.40 No.3
To develop tailored elementary, middle, and high school textbooks suitable for understanding the nuclear energy and radiation, quantitative and qualitative research was carried out in parallel, which included nine steps to ensure the validity of content and structure. The elementary, middle, and high school students wanted to acquire information used in their daily lives, including the definition of nuclear energy and radiation, principles and status of nuclear power generation, and information about irradiated food, medical radiation, and radiation in life. In the evaluation of the effects of textbook contents according to the educational requirements of each school level, high suitability frequencies (>80%) were shown for the human character, education goals, curriculum goals, evaluation method, and education time. At some levels, the high suitability frequencies (>70%) were shown for the education grade, education type, and textbook type.
Han, Yiwen,Kang, Wanmo,Thorne, James,Song, Youngkeun ELSEVIER SCIENCE B.V. AMSTERDAM 2019 URBAN FORESTRY AND URBAN GREENING Vol.41 No.-

Abstract

The fragmentation of natural habitats by urbanization often results in small and isolated remnants that lead to the degeneration of ecosystem services (ESs) and a loss of biodiversity. However, our understanding of the effects of landscape patterns on the provisioning of ESs in urban areas remains limited, as few studies have distinguished historical forest remnants (HFRs) from recently established habitats or have quantified changes in ESs due to HFRs. This study measured changes in the extent of forest ecosystems and the role played by HFRs in generating ESs in the human-dominated modernized landscape of Seoul, Republic of Korea. We use the spatial configuration of habitats to measure an index of habitat quality as an ES for a target conservation objective of general terrestrial biodiversity. Land-cover maps from two periods were used to identify 37 isolated patches within current parks with HFRs. Then landscape patterns and modeled habitat quality and habitat units (HUs) were quantified. Pearson correlation coefficients and forward stepwise multiple regression were used to examine the landscape metrics combined with HUs to explore key indicators that affect the HUs-value of HFRs. A 35.31% decline in total HUs was observed due to a significant decline in total forest area; however, the HUs of the HFRs increased by 0.5%. The shapes of current forests may positively affect the biodiversity of HFRs, whereas the area of newly formed habitats may negatively affect biodiversity in our modeling results. Thus, the careful design of newly formed habitats during city planning should include the preservation of historical remnants.

Highlights

The historical forest remnants within current forests habitats were identified at current parks.

A joint analysis of changes of landscape pattern and habitat quality values was approached.

The four key landscape metrics of current forests habitats played a significant role in affecting the habitat quality in historical forest remnants.

The careful design of newly formed habitats during city planning should include the preservation of historical remnants.

The System for Designing the Experience Game of Smart Phone
James E. Brown,Kil-Dong Hong,Chul-Soo Han,Jung-Hwan Sung,Hyo-Houn No,Eui-Sang Oh 한국콘텐츠학회 2009 ICCC International Digital Design Invitation Exhib Vol.2009 No.12
This paper describes a game design system that is effective to design a game running on a smart phone. Firstly, for establishing the system, we define a clip as a concept diagram which represents overall configuration of smart phone game. Secondly, we divide smart phone game configuration into four parts; User interaction part, picture part, Scene control part, and operation element part and extract elements of the four parts from smart phone game. Then, we apply these elements to the iphone game application, "Slugger" and show how the four parts produce the analyzed model of certain scenario of the game. Finally, we introduce the simulation environment of the analyzed model.
