        Psychological Approach to Somerset Maugham’s “Rain” : Focusing on Personality Typology and the Unconscious

        “Rain” is one of Maugham’s best known short stories to make him famous as a writer. This paper aims to explore the influence of the personality typology and psychological status of the protagonists on the development of the conflicts from the Freudian and Jungian perspectives. The conclusion is that for humans to live a peaceful life, it is very important to maintain equilibrium among three part of human psyche: the id, the ego, and the superego. If the balance is broken, humans sometimes do unexpected behaviors regardless of their own wills. From my own perspective, despite Davidson’s effort, the energy from the id was too strong for him to accommodate the order of the superego. The increasing anxiety caused by his morality and sexual desire made him feel heavily guilty, having him make a final decision to expiate his guilt and secure relief by committing suicide right after relieving his desire.

        Influence of Parent-Child Interaction through Reading of Books on SLA - Socio-Cultural Approach

          The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect of parent-child interaction through reading of books on second language acquisition based on socio-cultural theory. This qualitative case study used two methods: in-depth interviews and participant observations. Six Korean families with primary and secondary school students in the U.S. were recruited. Findings of the study indicated that children exposed to parent-child reading of books since infancy in Korea showed the highest proficiency in speaking and listening regardless of their age of exposure to the host country. The children before or right after primary school showed a high speaking proficiency without particular exposure to English in Korea. However, the children who were in puberty and had not regularly been exposed to parent-child reading of books showed different results about their proficiency in speaking depending on their personality. Outgoing and talkative children showed a high proficiency of speaking, while unsocial and quiet ones showed a relatively low proficiency of speaking. However, their low speaking proficiency was not closely related to their academic success in the mainstream schools.

        Unintentional temporomandibular joint disc reduction after orthognathic surgery: A case report with long-term imaging follow-up

        This report presents a rare case where a displaced temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc was reduced to its normal position after orthognathic surgery, and long-term magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up visualized these postoperative changes. A 22-year-old male patient presented for facial asymmetry. He also complained of pain in the right TMJ area, and MRI showed disc displacements in both TMJs. After orthognathic surgery for facial asymmetry correction, the TMJ was re-evaluated. The symptom had resolved and the disc was positioned within the normal range during mouth opening. However, 6 and a half years after surgery, he complained of recurrent pain in the right joint, and MRI revealed medial disc displacement in the right TMJ. In conclusion, the influence of orthognathic surgery on the disc position might continue for a long time until the TMJ adapts to the new position. Careful and long-term follow-up is suggested to assess the TMJ complex.

        예이츠의 후기 시에 대한 선사상적 접근

        선은 인도에서 근원하여 중국으로 들어와 독자적인 발상을 통하여 동아시아 전역에 커다란 영향을 미친 사상이다. 선은 선승들처럼 정상적인 삶의 궤도를 벗어나 초탈한 비범의 세계를 추구하는 것을 넘어서, 적나라한 현실을 있는 그대로 수용하고 바라보는 방식을 우리에게 가르친다. 선은 지식으로 습득되는 것이 아니고 깨달음을 통해 달성되는 것으로, 마음의 본래 상태를 체험함으로써 인간이 집착과 이원적 갈등에서 벗어나 조화로운 삶을 인식하게 해준다. 예이츠는 청년시절부터 노년에 이르기까지 이상과 현실, 영혼과 육체라는 이원적 갈등으로 괴로워했다. 따라서 외적자아와 내적자아의 충돌로 인한 갈등에서 벗어나 조화로운 삶을 영위하고자 하는 욕구도 그만큼 강했다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 노년에 이르러 일본 선의 대가인 스즈키의 영향으로 선사상을 기저로 현실수용과 인정을 통한 희열을 노래하는 시를 많이 발표하였다. 예이츠가 말하는 희열은 존재의 통합의 순간에 이루어지며 이 찰나적 죽음의 순간에 경험하는 행복은 선의 유여열반에 해당하는 것으로, 예술가뿐만 아니라 평범한 사람도 욕심과 집착을 버리고 현실을 직시하고 과오를 인정하는 마음으로 살아간다면 이러한 희열을 맛볼 수 있다고 그는 생각했다. 이 논문은 선과 선불교의 특징을 살펴보고 이러한 사상이 예이츠의 다양한 후기 시들에서 어떻게 표출되며 어떠한 의미를 함축하고 있는지 통시적 관점에서 고찰한다. The ultimate goal of Zen is to look within ourselves in order to directly see our true nature. Yeats suffered from the conflict between ideal and reality and body and soul. He had a strong desire to lead a harmonious life by escaping from the conflict caused by the crash of his outside self and inner self. Suzuki Daisetsu, a Japanese author of books and essays on Buddhism and Zen, had a great influence on Yeats’s thinking, which made him write many poems based on the teaching of Zen in his late life. However, rather than unconditionally accepting it, he took it as a model for resistance against modernity and succeeded in explaining his philosophy, Unity of Being, by appropriately employing it. This paper studies on the features of Zen and Zen Buddhism and how they are expressed in Yeats’s late poems and what meanings they have from the diachronic perspective.

        Transfer learning in a deep convolutional neural network for implant fixture classification: A pilot study

        Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of transfer learning in a deep convolutional neural network for classifying implant fixtures. Materials and Methods: Periapical radiographs of implant fixtures obtained using the Superline (Dentium Co. Ltd., Seoul, Korea), TS III (Osstem Implant Co. Ltd., Seoul, Korea), and Bone Level Implant (Institut Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland) systems were selected from patients who underwent dental implant treatment. All 355 implant fixtures comprised the total dataset and were annotated with the name of the system. The total dataset was split into a training dataset and a test dataset at a ratio of 8 to 2, respectively. YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once version 3, available at https:// pjreddie.com/darknet/yolo/), a deep convolutional neural network that has been pretrained with a large image dataset of objects, was used to train the model to classify fixtures in periapical images, in a process called transfer learning. This network was trained with the training dataset for 100, 200, and 300 epochs. Using the test dataset, the performance of the network was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Results: When YOLOv3 was trained for 200 epochs, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and confidence score were the highest for all systems, with overall results of 94.4%, 97.9%, 96.7%, and 0.75, respectively. The network showed the best performance in classifying Bone Level Implant fixtures, with 100.0% sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Conclusion: Through transfer learning, high performance could be achieved with YOLOv3, even using a small amount of data.

        인터내셔널 레토릭과 교육: 다문화적 접근

        이 논문은 사회문화적 및 상호문화적 관점에서 인터내셔널 레토릭(IR)1에 대한 개념 및 정의를 도출하고자 하는 것을 최우선 과제로 삼는다. 미시적으로는 IR적 관점이 교육에 종사하는 사람들의 의식변화에 영향을 주어 다문화가정의 자녀들 및 비엘리트나 문제아로 불리는 학생들에 대한 더욱 폭넓은 이해와 사랑을 끌어내고, 거시적으로는 정책입안자들의 의식을 전환시켜 이미 다문화사회로 접어든 한국의 교육정책을 수립 하는데 있어서 조금이나마 도움이 되기를 바라는 데 목적이 있다. 본고는 먼저 사회문화적 및 상호문화적 맥락에서 IR에 대한 정의를 도출해 낸 후, 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘이 IR의 개념 정립에 미친 영향에 대한 고찰을 통하여 IR을 특징짓는 상황화와 탈 중심이란 두 개념을 도출한다. 그리고 IR 개념을 교육에 적용시키기 위한 이론적 틀을 마련하기 위해 구성주의 이론과 사회문화적 이론을 고찰한다. 마지막으로, IR 개념이 ESL 교육현장에서 어떻게 적용되고 있으며, 한국적 상황에서는 지금까지 어떻게 적용되어 왔으며, 앞으로 더욱 효과적인 영어교수 및 교육현안을 위한 문제해결을 위해 어떻게 적용되어야 할지를 상술한다. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new concept, International Rhetoric(IR). I tried to draw its concept and definition from sociocultural and intercultural perspectives. I drew two main concepts featuring IR from the features of modernism and postmodernism. To set up a theoretical framework for its adaptation to pedagogy, constructivism and the sociocultural theory were studied. I also indicated how IR notions have been applied to the ESL settings and how they should be applied to Korean settings for the effective education in the future. Microscopically, I hope that this paper will shift the views of the people involved in English education and help to draw a wide range of understanding of the so called non elite students and problem makers at school as well as the children from multi ethnic families. And macroscopically, I hope that the IR concepts will help shift the views of policy makers and help their decision making to set the educational policies of Korea.
