Probing the Thermodynamic and Magnetic Properties of UV-B-Emitting GdAlO3 Phosphors by ESR and Optical Techniques

        Singh, V.,Sivaramaiah, G.,Mohapatra, M.,Rao, J. L.,Singh, N.,Pathak, M. S.,Singh, P. K.,Dhoble, S. J. Springer Science + Business Media 2017 Journal of Electronic Materials Vol.46 No.2

<P>GdAlO3 phosphor samples have been prepared by a solution combustion method. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the GdAlO3 phosphor stabilized in orthorhombic phase. The optical absorption spectrum showed bands due to Gd3+ ions as well as defect level in the host. The excitation spectrum exhibited a dominant band with maximum at 273 nm. Upon excitation at 273 nm, ultraviolet-B (UV-B) emission with maximum at 312 nm was observed from the undoped sample, being attributed to P-6(7/2) -> S-8(7/2) transition of Gd3+ ion. The UV-B emission was enhanced at liquid-nitrogen temperature (77 K), most probably due to increased ground-state population according to the Boltzmann distribution law. Electron spin resonance spectra of samples at both room and liquid-nitrogen temperature exhibited resonance signals at g ae 2, attributed to Gd3+ ions arranged with octahedral symmetry linked via oxygen bridges. Various magnetic and thermodynamic parameters for the phosphor system were evaluated by standard procedures. Correlation of these values with the optical properties suggested that the GdAlO3 phosphor can be effectively used as an UV-B light source for industrial applications at room temperature.</P>

EPR and optical investigation of ultraviolet-emitting Gd3Ga5O12 garnet

        Singh, Vijay,Sivaramaiah, G.,Singh, N.,Mohapatra, M.,Hakeem, D. A.,Pathak, M. S.,Rao, J. L. Springer-Verlag 2018 Journal of materials science Materials in electron Vol.29 No.2

<P>Gd3Ga5O12 garnet was prepared by a solution combustion method and characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical spectroscopic techniques. EPR spectrum of the samples at ambient and low temperatures exhibited resonance signal at g approximate to 2 attributed to Gd3+ ions disposed in an octahedral symmetry. The optical absorption spectrum showed a band centered at 274 nm attributed to S-8(7/2)-> I-6(J) transition of the Gd3+ ions. The excitation spectrum showed a maximum at 273 nm along with two relatively weaker peaks at 276 and 279 nm. These three excitation bands were assigned to the transitions S-8(7/2)-> I-6(J). The emission spectrum showed two peaks centered at 311 and 306 nm that were assigned to the transitions P-6(7/2)-> S-8(7/2) and P-6(5/2)-> S-8(7/2) of Gd3+, respectively. To evaluate the phosphor performance, several magnetic and thermodynamic parameters for the system were calculated adopting standard procedure.</P>

      • EPR and optical investigations of LaMgAl11O19:Cr3+ phosphor

        Singh, V.,Sivaramaiah, G.,Rao, J.L.,Kim, S.H. Pergamon Press 2014 Materials research bulletin Vol.60 No.-

The LaMgAl11O19:Cr3+ phosphor has been prepared by a low-temperature combustion synthesis method. As-prepared combustion synthesized powder was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance (DRS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and photoluminescence (PL) studies. The X-ray diffraction pattern reveals crystalline hexagonal phases. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum exhibits three broad bands characteristic of Cr3+ ions in octahedral symmetry. The EPR spectrum exhibits several resonance signals. The signals with the effective g values at g=4.84, 3.64 and 2.26 have been attributed to the isolated Cr3+ ions. The signal with the effective g value at g=1.94 has been attributed to exchange coupled Cr3+-Cr3+ ion pairs. The PL studies exhibit several bands characteristic of Cr3+ ions in octahedral symmetry.

Limiting Concentrate during Growing Period Affect Performance and Gene Expression of Hepatic Gluconeogenic Enzymes and Visfatin in Korean Native Beef Calves

        Chang, S.S.,Lohakare, J.D.,Singh, N.K.,Kwon, E.G.,Nejad, J.G.,Sung, K.I.,Hong, S.K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2013 Animal Bioscience Vol.26 No.2

This study elucidated the effects of limited concentrate feeding on growth, plasma profile, and gene expression of gluconeogenic enzymes and visfatin in the liver of Hanwoo beef calves. The purpose of this study was to test that reducing the amount of concentrate would partially be compensated by increasing the intake of forage and by altering the metabolic status. The study utilized 20 Korean native beef calves (Hanwoo; 60 to 70 d of age) divided into two groups of 10 calves each for 158 d. Control group calves received the amount of concentrate as per the established Korean feeding standards for Hanwoo, whereas calves in the restricted group only received half the amount of concentrate as per standard requirements. Good quality forage (Timothy hay) was available for ad libitum consumption to both groups. Since calves were with their dam until 4 months of age in breeding pens before weaning, the intake of milk before weaning was not recorded, however, the concentrate and forage intakes were recorded daily. Body weights (BW) were recorded at start and on 10 d interval. Blood samples were collected at start and at 50 d interval. On the final day of the experiment, liver biopsies were collected from all animals in each group. The BW was not different between the groups at all times, but tended to be higher (p = 0.061) only at final BW in control than restricted group. Total BW gain in the control group was 116.2 kg as opposed to 84.1 kg in restricted group that led to average BW gain of 736 g/d and 532 g/d in respective groups, and the differences were significant (p<0.01). As planned, the calves in the control group had higher concentrate and lower forage intake than the restricted group. The plasma variables like total protein and urea were higher (p<0.05) in control than restricted group. The mRNA expressions for the gluconeogenic enzymes such as cytosolic phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase (EC 4.1.1.32) and pyruvate carboxylase (EC 6.4.1.1), and visfatin measured by quantitative real-time PCR in liver biopsies showed higher expression (p<0.05) in restricted group than control. Overall, restricting concentrate severely reduced the growth intensity and affected few plasma indices, and gene expression in liver was increased indicating that restricting concentrate in the feeding schemes during early growth for beef calves is not advocated.

Combined Application of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Trichoderma viride has an Improved Biocontrol Activity Against Stem Rot in Groundnut

        Manjula, K.,Kishore, G.Krishna,Girish, A.G.,Singh, S.D. The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2004 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.20 No.1

In an attempt to develop effective biocontrol system for management of stem rot disease in groundnut, 57 bacterial isolates and 13 isolates of Trichoderma spp. were evaluated for their antagonistic activity against Sclerotium rolfsii. The antagonists were selected based on their ability to inhibit the external growth of S. rolfsii from infected groundnut seeds. Four isolates of Pseudomonas fluorescens, GB 4, GB 8, GB 10 and GB 27, and T. viride pq 1 were identified as potent antagonists of S. rolfsii. T. viride pq 1 produced extracellular chitinase and parasitized the mycelium of S. rolfsii. Under controlled environment conditions, P. fluorescens GB 10, GB 27, T. viride pq 1 and the systemic fungicide Thiram(equation omitted) reduced the mortality of S. rolfsii inoculated to groundnut seedlings by 58.0%, 55.9%, 70.0% and 25.9%, respectively compared to control. In vitro growth of P. fluorescens GB 10 and GB 27 was compatible with T. viride pq 1 and Thiram(equation omitted). Integrated use of these two bacterial isolates with T. viride pq 1 or Thiram(equation omitted) improved their biocontrol efficacy. Combined application of either GB 10 or GB 27 with T. viride pq 1 was significantly effective than that with Thiram(equation omitted) in protecting groundnut seedlings from stem rot infection.

      • Combustion Synthesized Europium Doped LaAl11O18 Phosphors—An Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Optical Study

        Singh, Vijay,Sivaramaiah, G.,Rao, J. L.,Kumaran, R. Senthil,Dhoble, S. J. American Scientific Publishers 2016 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.16 No.1

<P>By adopting a facile solution combustion synthesis, crystallized europium doped blue phosphors were successfully prepared. These phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared absorption (FT-IR), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Photoluminescence (PL) experimental methods. The photoluminescence spectrum indicates Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions in these phosphors. The band at around 442 nm is attributed to the spin-allowed 4f(6)5d(1) (D-2) -> (4)f(7)(S-6(7/2)) transition of Eu2+ ions. The sharp bands at 591 (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) and 616 (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) nm are attributed to the spin-forbidden transitions of Eu3+ ions. The EPR spectra of as-prepared and post-treated LaAl11O18:Eu phosphors exhibit signals characteristic of La2+ and Eu2+ ions. The number of spins, Gibbs energy, magnetic susceptibility, Curie constant and effective magnetic moment values were calculated and compared at 296 and 110 K.</P>

Quality and Fertility of Post Thaw Sephadex Filtered Bull Semen

        Kumar, A.,Singh, J.,Nanda, A.S.,Pangaonkar, G.R. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2004 Animal Bioscience Vol.17 No.6

The present investigation was carried out to assess the effect of Sephadex (G-15) filtration on the post thaw bull semen quality and conception rate. Post thaw unfiltered (control) and Sephadex filtered semen from four healthy bulls (three cross bred and one pure bred Holstein Friesian) were subjected to microscopic examination viz. sperm concentration, individual motility, live sperm count and sperm morphology. Sixty-two healthy, normal cycling crossbred cows were inseminated with post thaw unfiltered (n=32) and filtered semen (n=30). Sephadex filtration of post thaw semen significantly (p<0.05) decreased total sperm concentration and sperm with abnormal head, mid piece and tail. The overall average total sperm concentration, head and tail defects in filtered semen decreased significantly (53.4, 1.2 and 6.4 million) than in the unfiltered semen (80.4, 2.4 and 15.7 million, respectively). However, after filtration significant (p<0.05) increase in overall average motile and live sperm concentration were observed (38.8 and 38.0) as compared to unfiltered semen (29.2 and 32.0 million, respectively). The overall conception rate recorded was 21.9% with post thaw unfiltered semen and 56.7% with filtered semen. It was concluded that Sephadex filtration of post thaw semen improved its quality and conception rate.

        Eu2+ and Mn2+ Co-doped BaMgAl10O17 Blue- and Green-Emitting Phosphor: A Luminescence and EPR Study

        Singh, V.,Sivaramaiah, G.,Rao, J. L.,Singh, N.,Srivastava, A. K.,Jirimali, H. D.,Li, J.,Gao, H.,Kumaran, R. S.,Singh, P. K. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Journal of electronic materials Vol.45 No.6

<P>Eu2+ and Mn2+ co-doped BaMgAl10O17 phosphor has been prepared by a solution combustion method. The structural, morphological and compositional analysis of the BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ and Mn2+ powders have been studied by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum exhibited resonance signals with the effective g values of g a parts per thousand 4.88 and g a parts per thousand 1.98. The resonance signal with the effective g value of g a parts per thousand 4.88 is characteristic of Eu2+ ions whereas g a parts per thousand 1.98 is due to Mn2+ ions. The number of spins participating in resonance, Gibbs free energy, magnetic susceptibility, Curie constant, effective magnetic moment, zero-field splitting parameter and hyperfine splitting constant have been evaluated. From optical and EPR correlation, it is inferred that Eu2+ and Mn2+ are present in the BaMgAl10O17 matrix.</P>

Notes : Host Plant-Antheraea mylitta Interactions and Its Effect on Reproductive and Commercial Parameters

        ( S. S. Rath ),( G. S. Singh ),( S. S. Singh ),( M. K. Singh ),( N. Suryanarayana ),( N. B. Vijayaprakash ) 한국잠사학회 2008 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.17 No.2

Impact of food plant on reproductive and commercial parameters in Antheraea mylitta, a polyphagous insect of economic importance was studied upon feeding the insect larvae on the same host plants for six continuous generations. A. mylitta larvae were fed upon Terminalia tomentosa, Terminalia arjuna and Zizyphus jujuba and restricted them to the same host plant for six generations to document the quantitative improvement in reproductive and commercial parameters. The parameters showed significant improvement in all the host plants studied over their respective controls. Fecundity among the reproductive parameters was highly improved than others (85.9% in T. tomentosa; 58% in T. arjuna and 49.7% in Z. jujuba). Likewise in commercial parameters, the shell weight in male showed the highest improvement (by 52.9%, 45.8% and 42.1% in T. tomentosa; T. arjuna and Z. jujuba respectively). On the other hand, the shell ratio percentage in female recorded the lowest improvement. The values for all characters were recorded a decline in T. arjuna and Z. jujuba fed ones over T. tomentosa, except that of shell ratio percentage in female has registered an increase in Z jujuba fed. The study thus revealed the comparative superiority of T. tomentosa over T. arjuna and Z. jujuba.
