      • The association of disease activity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and neurotrophic factors with depression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

        Cheon, Yun-Hong,Lee, Seung-Geun,Kim, Mingyo,Kim, Hyun-Ok,Sun Suh, Young,Park, Ki-Soo,Kim, Rock Bum,Yang, Hyun-Su,Kim, Ji-Min,Son, Chang-Nam,Kyoung Park, Eun,Kim, Sang-Hyon,Lee, Sang-Il Elsevier 2018 Brain, behavior, and immunity Vol.73 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Inflammation and trophic factors (brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF], vascular endothelial growth factor, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, and insulin-like growth factor-1) are associated with depression in the general population. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic representative inflammatory autoimmune disease; however, the association of disease activity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and neurotrophic factors with depression has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, we determined the prevalence of depression and risk factors for depression and deterioration of depressive symptoms in RA patients. In addition, we analyzed the association between disease activity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, trophic factors, and depression in RA (N = 474). Demographic and laboratory data were examined, and routine assessment of patient index data 3 (RAPID 3) and disease activity score 28-joint count C-reactive protein (DAS 28-CRP) was performed to assess disease activity of RA. Depression was measured using the Korean version of the Beck Depression Inventory-second edition (K-BDI II). A K-BDI score ≥18 was considered the cut-off for depression in accordance with a previous validation study. The serum level of pro-inflammatory cytokines and neurotrophic factors was assessed by enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay. The prevalence of depression was 32.4% in patients with RA. The severity of disease activity of RA (RAPID 3 score [OR 2.34; 95% confidence interval, CI 1.22–4.51], DAS 28-CRP [≥3.2] [OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.01–2.53]) and severity of fatigue (OR 1.26 95% CI 1.15–1.38) were associated with depression and deterioration of depressive symptoms in the multivariate analysis. Among the components of RAPID 3 and DAS 28-CRP, patient assessment for global health and abilities for daily performance were more related to depression. The level of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-alpha) was not related to depression. The level of BDNF was significantly lower in RA patients with depression and was negatively correlated with K-BDI II score. Depression was related with the level of fatigue, low expression of BDNF, and high RA disease activity, which was associated with impaired ability to perform activities of daily life. Strict control of fatigue and disease activity to improve one’s capacity to perform daily life activities would be important to regulate depression. The level of BDNF might be one of the possible biomarkers to predict or monitor depression in patients with RA.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Prevalence of depression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was analyzed. </LI> <LI> Risk factors for depression and deterioration of depressive symptoms and were analyzed. </LI> <LI> Depression was related with disease activity in RA. </LI> <LI> Depression in RA was associated with impaired ability to perform activities of daily life. </LI> <LI> Among neurotrophic factors, the level of BDNF was related with depression in RA patients. </LI> <LI> The level of pro-inflammatory cytokines were not related with depression in RA patients. </LI> </UL> </P>

Vol.44 No.-

The effects of sulfhydryl compounds, cysteine and glutathione, on populations of melanocytes, the sizes of melanosomes and the ratios of melanosomal stages of epidermal melanocytes in UVB-irradiated C57BL black mice were evaluated. The results were as follow: 1. Both of cysteine and glutathione showed no significant diminution in the numbers of dopa-positive melanocytes except at the end of 5 weeks' treatment with glutathione. 2. Both of cysteine and glutathione showed significant diminution in short axis of melanosomes and the percentage of stage Ⅳ melanosomes of epidermal melanocytes. 3. The lengthes of short axes of melanosomes in glutathione-treated group were smaller than those in cysteine-treated group at the end of 3rd week of intraperitoneal injection. 4. In the glutathione-treated group, the short axes of melanosomes and the percentages of stage Ⅳ melanosomes decreased in proportion to the period of intraperitoneal injection.

This study was designed to inverstigate the effects of resting methods - active rest and inactive rest-after exercise of maximum of gradual load, on energy metabolism and Blood Lipids. I surveyed 6 male basketball players in a high school in order to investigate the effects on exercise spot and analysed the relations of blood variations before and after exercise of maximum of gradual load with a treadmill and 3, 6, l0minutes after recovery step. the results was as follows; In the difference between active and inactive resting method, to make a comparatived of Albumin, Glucose and Total-Protein appeared respectively 6minutes after the recovery step. Albumin and Total-Protein were significant differences (P<.05) in group and time, glucose was significant differences(P<.05) in time and method x time. In the difference between active and inactive resting method, to make a comparatived of Total-Cholesterol and Triglyceride appeared respectively each group. Total-Cholesterol was significant differences(P<.05) in group and time, Triglyceride was significant differences(P<.05) in method.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Yoga exercise on Immunoglobulin(IgE, IgM, IgD, IgG, IgA) in the alcoholism. The subjects involved in this study consists of 14 people who were confirmed to have alcohol-related problems by DSM-Ⅳ(1994) of American Psychiatric Association and were diagnosed as alcoholism in hospital. The subjects were classified into yoga exercise group(7 people) and control group(7 people). The yoga exercise group participated in the exercise programs named Hatayoga and Asana. This treatment was performed an hour per day, three days a week for 16 weeks while the control group watched TV for the same time. A paired t-test was used to examine differences between pre, post 8weeks and post 16weeks test scores. The results are as follows. After 16 week yoga exercise, there was a significant increase(p<.01) of Immunoglobulin (IgM, IgA(p<.05) & IgG) in the experiment group, compared with the control group. In terms of periodic change, the experiment group showed a significant higher result(p<.01) than the control group after 16 weeks, rather than after the 8 weeks. The result of this study above indicates that the long-term low intensity exercise can activate Immunoglobulint in alcoholism.

      • A Bound of the Correlation Function of Simpson's Quadrature

Vol.4 No.-

When we study the problem of computing a posteriori bounds on the error of Simpson's quadrature the error bounds as well as the approximation to the integral ∫_(0)^(1)f(x)dx are computed based on a (fixed) finite number of function values. In this paper, we compute the bound of the correlation function with the probability measure w_(r) which is Gaussian measure with zero measure in order to calculate a posteriori bounds possible.

      • An Error Bound for Simpson's Quadrature

Vol.5 No.-

In general, the worst case setting is mainly used for the error estimate in the numerical integration. In this study, we use the probabilistic setting for an error estimate for Simpson's quadrature and show that for r≤5 and subintervals of equal length, the conditional variance of X, given Y=y, is det(C)/σ_(Y) = θ(h^(2r+2)).
