          Structural robustness of RC frame buildings under threat-independent damage scenarios

          This study focuses on a novel procedure for the robustness assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) framed structures under threat-independent damage scenarios. The procedure is derived from coupled dynamic and non-linear static analyses. Two robustness indicators are defined and the method is applied to two RC frame buildings. The first building was designed for gravity load and earthquake resistance in accordance with Eurocode 8. The second was designed according to the tie force (TF) method, one of the design quantitative procedures for enhancing resistance to progressive collapse. In addition, in order to demonstrate the suitability and applicability of the TF method, the structural robustness and resistance to progressive collapse of the two designs is compared.

          Crack constitutive model for the prediction of punching failure modes of fiber reinforced concrete laminar structures

          The capability of a multi-directional fixed smeared crack constitutive model to simulate the flexural/punching failure modes of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) laminar structures is discussed. The constitutive model is implemented in a computer program based on the finite element method, where the FRC laminar structures were simulated according to the Reissner-Mindlin shell theory. The shell is discretized into layers for the simulation of the membrane, bending and out-of-plane shear nonlinear behavior. A stress-strain softening diagram is proposed to reproduce, after crack initiation, the evolution of the normal crack component. The in-plane shear crack component is obtained using the concept of shear retention factor, defined by a crack-strain dependent law. To capture the punching failure mode, a softening diagram is proposed to simulate the decrease of the out-of-plane shear stress components with the increase of the corresponding shear strain components, after crack initiation. With this relatively simple approach, accurate predictions of the behavior of FRC structures failing in bending and in shear can be obtained. To assess the predictive performance of the model, a punching experimental test of a module of a façade panel fabricated with steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete is numerically simulated. The influence of some parameters defining the softening diagrams is discussed.

          Private tutoring through the internet: globalization and offshoring

          The private tutoring industry has come forward as the third great sector of education. The common sense representation about private tutoring is changing. The growing search for supplementary educational support services and the technological innovation have created a new paradigm. This paper focuses on one of the most interesting faces of this new phenomenon: the rise of private tutoring through the internet. The very promising market is considered by some analysts as a true explosion on the offer and demand levels. Many families are feeling increasingly unable to provide their children the `` extra help'' they need to meet the requirements of further steps in the education system. So, for several reasons, they are outsourcing and even offshoring this so important and competitive task. The field is full of learning and market opportunities. This is the new globalized world of the less shadow and progressively growing private tutoring in the XXI century.

        • NLQR Control of High Pressure EGR in Diesel Engine

          The tightening of the diesel pollutant emission regulations has made the performances obtainable from steady-state map controls, commonly employed in Internal Combustion Engine management, unsatisfactory. To overcome these limitations a NonLinear Quadratic Regulator (NLQR) system for the High Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (HP-EGR) loop of a turbocharged diesel engine has been developed to control the intake O₂ concentration and the Intake MAnifold Pressure (IMAP). This model-based control approach exploits the prediction of two dynamic Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) to compute the command actions for the HP-EGR valve and VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) rack position. Engine speed, engine load, HP-EGR and VGT valves positions together with the intake O₂ concentration and IMAP feedbacks are the inputs used by the RNN to compute the predictions. In order to select the next HP-EGR and VGT control actions the effect of different command combinations, retrieved from a discretized action space, are evaluated through a quadratic objective function to be minimized. Two different transient profiles have been used to test the designed control system against the steady-state map approach. The developed control system has shown a satisfactory performance improvement over the map control. Therefore it is suitable for the subsequent assessment on the real engine.

        • Recurrent Neural Network to Estimate Intake Manifold O₂ Concentration in a Diesel Engine

          Emission regulations are becoming more and more stringent, especially on NOX pollutants, making diesel engines with their embedded control systems more and more complex. To ensure a correct and clean engine functioning, all the control strategies related to aftertreatment, fuel injection and air-path have to exploit or target the intake manifold O₂ concentration. The O₂ concentration is strictly related to engine-out NOX emissions and an accurate model, to be implemented in emission control systems, is essential. The paper addresses the modeling of the intake O₂ concentration in a turbocharged diesel engine by means of a Recurrent Neural Network with simulation focus and fed with four inputs. The inputs are engine load, engine speed and the position of Exhaust Gas Recirculation and Variable Geometry Turbochargers valves. Training and validation data are generated using the engine simulation tool GT-Power implementing a detailed model of the engine while the training procedure is performed in MATLAB environment through NNSYSID toolbox. The performances of the obtained model are satisfactory in different tests and the model is able to account for the engine nonlinearities during transients.

          Outcome of Arthroscopic Treatment of Mucoid Degeneration of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament

          Background: Mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament is a rare pathological entity. Several authors have identified this condition, described their experiences, and suggested their own guidelines for management. The aim of this study was to detail the clinical, radiological, arthroscopic, and pathological findings of mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament and report the clinical outcomes following arthroscopic treatment. Methods: A historical cohort of patients who underwent arthroscopic total or partial excision of the anterior cruciate ligament due to mucoid degeneration between 2011 and 2014 were reviewed. The minimum follow-up was 3 years. Demographic, radiological, and histological findings, type of surgery, and clinical pre- and postoperative data were analyzed. The visual analogue scale score, the International Knee Documentation Committee score, and the Tegner Lysholm Knee Score were collected preoperatively, postoperatively, and during the follow-up period. Results: Seventeen females (67%) and eight males (33%) were included in the final analysis. The mean age at the time of surgery was 57 years (range, 31 to 78 years). Partial resection of the anterior cruciate ligament was done in seven cases and a complete resection in 18 cases. No reconstruction was performed at the same time. A positive Lachman test and a negative pivot shift were noted after surgery in all cases. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction was required in only one young patient due to disabling instability. At last follow-up, the mean visual analogue scale score, International Knee Documentation Committee score, and Tegner Lysholm Knee score improved (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Our study provides further evidence that arthroscopic total or partial excision of anterior cruciate ligament is a safe and effective treatment for mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament, improving patient satisfaction and function without causing clinical instability in daily activities. However, young patients should be forewarned about the risk of instability, and an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction could be necessary.

          Apprendimento dell'italiano come ls in corea: criticità linguistiche e culturali

          본 논문은 한국 학생들이 외국어로서 이탈리아어를 습득하는 과정에서 만나게 되는 주된 어려움의 원인들을 알아보고자 한다. 고려할 두 가지 변수는 언어적인 것과 사회문화적인 것이다. 우선 학습자들의 중간언어에서 출발하여 이탈리아어와 한국어 간의 대조 분석을 제시하고, 습득의 진행을 어렵게 하는 모국어의 형태론, 구문론 그리고 음성학적인 개입을 규명한다. 두 번째 파트에서는 구술 생산력의 저해 요인 즉, 습득을 지연시키는 장애물로 예상되는 두 가지 문화적 요소로 강한 집단 소속감과 사회 계층구조를 살펴본다. 결론에서는 기저 체계에 필요한 적응 지침과 함께 원활한 습득을 위한 보다 적절한 접근으로서 Cooperative Learning 협력학습을 제안한다.
