The impact of body armor on physical performance of law enforcement personnel

Background: The law enforcement officer profession requires performance of arduous occupational tasks while carrying an external load, consisting of, at minimum, a chest rig, a communication system, weaponry, handcuffs, personal protective equipment and a torch. The aim of this systematic review of the literature was to identify and critically appraise the methodological quality of published studies that have investigated the impacts of body armour on task performance and to synthesize and report key findings from these studies to inform law enforcement organizations. Methods: Several literature databases (Medline, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, EMBAS) were searched using key search words and terms to identify appropriate studies. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria were critically evaluated using the Downs and Black protocol with inter-rater agreement determined by Cohen’s Kappa. Results: Sixteen articles were retained for evaluation with a mean Downs and Black score of 73.2 ± 6.8% (k = 0.841). Based on the research quality and findings across the included studies, this review determined that while effects of body armour on marksmanship and physiological responses have not yet been adequately ascertained, body armour does have significant physical performance and biomechanical impacts on the wearer, including: a) increased ratings of perceived exertion and increased time to complete functional tasks, b) decreased work capability (indicated by deterioration in fitness test scores), c) decreased balance and stability, and d) increased ground reaction forces. Conclusions: Given the physical performance and biomechanical impacts on the wearer, body armour should be carefully selected, with consideration of the physical fitness of the wearers and the degree to which the armour systems can be ergonomically optimized for the specific population in question.

Ceramics with perovskite-type structure are interesting functional materials for several energy conversion processes due to their flexible structure and a variety of properties. Prominent examples are electrode materials in fuel cells and batteries, thermoelectric converters, piezoelectrics, and photocatalysts. The very attractive physical-chemical properties of perovskite-type phases can be modified in a controlled way by changing the composition and crystallographic structure in tailor-made soft chemistry synthesis processes. Improved thermoelectric materials such as cobaltates with p-type conductivity and n-type manganates are developed by following theoretical predictions and tested to be applied in oxidic thermoelectric converters.

With La rebambaramba (1928), librettist Alejo Carpentier and composer Amadeo Roldan explored ballet as a medium for creating nationalist art. The work`s depiction of a nineteenth-century carnival in Havana was typical of afrocubanismo, an artistic movement that borrowed themes and materials from Afro-Cuban culture. La rebambaramba denounced Cuba`s history of colonialism, slavery, racism and patriarchy, while also subverting a government ban of black music and dance in the 1920s. The parameters of dielectric response based on extended Debye circuit model can refl ect oil-paper insulation state. The model using the initial slop of recovery voltage to estimate circuit parameters, serve as good quality consistency with the measured data. However, the model can be applicable for large power transformers but not for distribution transformers. This paper proposed an improved mathematical model using recovery voltage peak, peak time and initial slope characteristics to solve dielectric response equivalent circuit parameters. The identifi cation of equivalent circuit parameters is converted into a mathematical optimization problem. And then particle swarm optimization algorithm is used for solving the problem. The improved mathematical model can decrease sampling data of recovery voltage. To check the validity of the estimated parameters, the on-site measured data of RVM experiments on actual transformers in various capacities is applied. The calculated result shows that the recovery voltage curve calculated and measured recovery voltage curve have good consistency, which can be advantageous to diagnose the oil-paper insulation status of transformer. It illustrates that the improved method proposed in this paper is feasible and eff ective.

Information Technology (IT) has been working as an engine of growth in Korea since early 1990’s. For the next leap of Korean economy and to overcome worldwide financial crisis, Korea’s IT industry needs to find a new breakthrough. In this viewpoint, we tried to empirically analyze the impact of Korea’s IT trade on domestic industry. Since Korean government is trying to set up a few free trade agreements (FTA) with major trade partners, more accurate understanding of the impact of FTA is required to find the correct way to promote Korea’s IT industry. We first looked at the current status of Korea’s IT trade with major partners such as the US, Japan, and China to understand the competitiveness of Korea’s IT industry. Having done this, we measured the impact of IT trade on domestic industry using Granger causality test. The results showed that the positive impact of trade is bigger on IT industry than on whole industry. Also, the impact of import turned out to be bigger than that of export. Among themajor trade partner countries, the US’s and China’s impacts are bigger than Japan’s impact. Another notable thing is that IT product import from the US has especially big impact on domestic IT industry. Our findings may have certain implications to the FTA related policy.
