Vol.8 No.1
Today, in the civilization societies, illness and health problems are controlled by scientific medicine. However, the situation was different in 18th-century British society. There were regular physicians and irregular hearers competing in the medical market. For the poor, it was a serious problem that the medical treatments of regular physicians were practiced for upper class usually, even their effects were weak. Therefore, it was natural that the poor searched for cheap and efficacious remedies. John Wesley, Anglican minister, tried to provide medical information for the popular by publishing medical texts and to practice medical treatments for them. In this context, I examine the phenomenon of mutual interference between religion and medicine in 18th century British society focusing on the religio-medical concept of John Wesley. For the purpose, I examine how John Wesley tried to form Christianity's identity as a rational religion in relation to the treatment of disease, while reshaping a healing as an important aspect of religion with the knowledges of modern science. And I show the context in which John Wesley practiced medical treatments and published medical texts for the public in 18th century British society.
Variable Shape and Stiffness Feedback System for VR Gloves Using SMA Textile Actuator
SangUn Kim,SeongMo Gu,Jooyong Kim 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.3
Currently, when direct human contact is limited owing to the coronavirus era, virtual reality systems are atechnology that enables interaction without spatial restrictions. In this study, a system capable of feedbacking variousshapes and stiffness when touching an object in virtual reality was conceived using the SMA textile actuator, which is ashape memory alloy (SMA) that remembers by training at 500 °C for 15 min with training tools that fixed shapes of SMAorigin, and it returns to the shape at 40.13 °C or higher by Joule heating. SMA textile actuators were fabricated by zigzagstitching with 0.5 mm intervals. Various shapes were feedback because the SMA textile actuators on gloves interfere withthe movement of the finger joints and the feedback force levels of stiffness are divided based on the number of actuatorsoperating, and feedback is possible in three levels. We verified shape feedback that matches sensing points that are placedon the virtual finger joints created by Unity 3D, which is a software for making virtual reality to feedback points on VRgloves with three events using Unity 3D logs. We measured the forces of each feedback force level with SMA diameters 0.4of 0.6 mm. The results showed 2.3 N with 0.6 mm; however, owing to its rigidity, 0.5 mm SMA textile actuator isappropriate. Finally, by implementing one feedback point of the VR gloves, we verified the operation of the system from theoccurrence of an event by touching an object in virtual reality to control the feedback force level through the MCU andrelay.

Background: In this study, we examined the influence of exercise loading characteristics on bone metabolic responses and bone morphology in the growth phase and adulthood. Methods: Running exercise (RUN) and jumping exercise (JUM) were used for the exercise loading in 28-day-old male Wistar rats. Bone metabolism was measured by blood osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP) levels. For bone morphology, the maximum bone length, bone weight, and bone strength of the femur and tibia were measured. Results: A pre- and post-exercise loading comparison in the growth phase showed significantly increased OC levels in the RUN and JUM groups and significantly decreased TRACP levels in the JUM group. On the other hand, a pre- and post-exercise loading comparison in adulthood showed significantly decreased TRACP levels in the RUN and JUM groups. Femur lengths were significantly shorter in the RUN and JUM groups than in the control (CON) group, while bone weight was significantly greater in the JUM group than in the CON group. Conclusions: Exercise loading activates OC levels in the growth phase and suppresses TRACP levels in adulthood. On the other hand, these results suggest that excessive exercise loading may suppress bone length.

To enhance the rule-based reasoning capability of Semantic Web, the XRML (eXtensible Rule Markup Language) approach embraces the meta-information necessary for the extraction of explicit rules from Web pages and its maintenance. To effectuate the automatic identification of rules from unstructured texts, this research develops a framework of using rule ontology. The ontology can be acquired from a similar site first, and then can be used for multiple sites in the same domain. The procedure of ontology-based rule identification is regarded as a graph search problem with incomplete nodes, and an A algorithm is devised to solve the problem. The procedure is demonstrated with the domain of shipping rates and return policy comparison portal, which needs rule based reasoning capability to answer the customer’s inquiries. An example ontology is created from Amazon.com, and is applied to the many online retailers in the same domain. The experimental result shows a high performance of this approach.
A new flexible Weibull distribution
Park, Sangun,Park, Jihwan,Choi, Youngsik The Korean Statistical Society 2016 Communications for statistical applications and me Vol.23 No.5
Many of studies have suggested the modifications on Weibull distribution to model the non-monotone hazards. In this paper, we combine two cumulative hazard functions and propose a new modified Weibull distribution function. The newly suggested distribution will be named as a new flexible Weibull distribution. Corresponding hazard function of the proposed distribution shows flexible (monotone or non-monotone) shapes. We study the characteristics of the proposed distribution that includes ageing behavior, moment, and order statistic. We also discuss an estimation method for its parameters. The performance of the proposed distribution is compared with existing modified Weibull distributions using various types of hazard functions. We also use real data example to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed distribution.
