Constrained Spatiotemporal Independent Component Analysis and Its Application for fMRI Data Analysis

        Rasheed, Tahir,Lee, Young-Koo,Lee, Sung-Young,Kim, Tae-Seong The Korean Society of Medical and Biological Engin 2009 의공학회지 Vol.30 No.5

In general, Independent component analysis (ICA) is a statistical blind source separation technique, used either in spatial or temporal domain. The spatial or temporal ICAs are designed to extract maximally independent sources in respective domains. The underlying sources for spatiotemporal data (sequence of images) can not always be guaranteed to be independent, therefore spatial ICA extracts the maximally independent spatial sources, deteriorating the temporal sources and vice versa. For such data types, spatiotemporal ICA tries to create a balance by simultaneous optimization in both the domains. However, the spatiotemporal ICA suffers the problem of source ambiguity. Recently, constrained ICA (c-ICA) has been proposed which incorporates a priori information to extract the desired source. In this study, we have extended the c-ICA for better analysis of spatiotemporal data. The proposed algorithm, i.e., constrained spatiotemporal ICA (constrained st-ICA), tries to find the desired independent sources in spatial and temporal domains with no source ambiguity. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested against the conventional spatial and temporal ICAs using simulated data. Furthermore, its performance for the real spatiotemporal data, functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI), is compared with the SPM (conventional fMRI data analysis tool). The functional maps obtained with the proposed algorithm reveal more activity as compared to SPM.

Identity-Exchange based Privacy Preserving Mechanism in Vehicular Networks

        Rasheed Hussain(후세인 라쉬드),Heekuck Oh(오희국) 한국정보보호학회 2014 정보보호학회논문지 Vol.24 No.6

Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is realized through a highly ephemeral network, i.e. vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) which is on its way towards the deployment stage, thanks to the advancements in the automobile and communication technologies. However, it has not been successful, at least to date, to install the technology in the mass of vehicles due to security and privacy challenges. Besides, the users of such technology do not want to put their privacy at stake as a result of communication with peer vehicles or with the infrastructure. Therefore serious privacy measures should be taken before bringing this technology to the roads. To date, privacy issues in ephemeral networks in general and in VANET in particular, have been dealt with through various approaches. So far, multiple pseudonymous approach is the most prominent approach. However, recently it has been found out that even multiple pseudonyms cannot protect the privacy of the user and profilation is still possible even if different pseudonym is used with every message. Therefore, another privacy-aware mechanism is essential in vehicular networks. In this paper, we propose a novel identity exchange mechanism to preserve conditional privacy of the users in VANET. Users exchange their pseudonyms with neighbors and then use neighbors’ pseudonyms in their own messages. To this end, our proposed scheme conditionally preserves the privacy where the senders of the message can be revoked by the authorities in case of any dispute.

Formulation, characterization and in vitro evaluation of herbal sunscreen lotion

        Rasheed, Arun,Shama, S. Neelufar,Mohanalakshmi, S.,Ravichandran, V. 경희한의학연구센터 2012 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.12 No.4

Natural substances extracted from plants have recently been considered as potential sunscreen resources owing to high ultraviolet ray absorption and antioxidant activity. The decrease in the intensity of UV radiation reaching the skin through sunscreens may reduce the risk of sun-induced skin cancer. The present study attempts to develop sunscreen lotions, possessing broad spectrum of anti-UV radiation effectiveness with reduced concentration of chemical UV filters, from the extracts of bioactive products such as Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae), Aloe vera (Liliaceae) and Alpinia galanga Willd. The effectiveness of the product was evaluated using Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Curcumin was selected as potential bioactive agents due to their phytochemical compositions possessing considerable content of polyphenolic compounds and Alpinia galanga is used as key ingredient in various commercial sunscreen lotions as it has skin protectant action against UV rays and boosts the activity of conventional sunscreens. The sunscreen lotions were prepared using three different compositions F1, F2 and F3 and evaluated for their stability, safety and SPF. Results showed that the sunscreen lotions were non-mutagenic, non-irritant, stable and possess SPF for normal skin. The efficacy when tested with a standard was observed to be same as that of a marketed sunscreen with SPF 55 and SPF 20. From the present study, formulation F2 having curcumin extract was proved to be stable and effective with high SPF compared to F1 and F3.

Reconstruction algorithm for archaeological fragments using slope features

Rasheed, Nada A.,Nordin, Md Jan Electronics and Telecommunications Research Instit 2020 ETRI Journal Vol.42 No.3

The reconstruction of archaeological fragments in 3D geometry is an important problem in pattern recognition and computer vision. Therefore, we implement an algorithm with the help of a 3D model to perform reconstruction from the real datasets using the slope features. This approach avoids the problem of gaps created through the loss of parts of the artifacts. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assemble the object without previous knowledge about the form of the original object. We utilize the edges of the fragments as an important feature in reconstructing the objects and apply multiple procedures to extract the 3D edge points. In order to assign the positions of the unknown parts that are supposed to match, the contour must be divided into four parts. Furthermore, to classify the fragments under reconstruction, we apply a backpropagation neural network. We test the algorithm on several models of ceramic fragments. It achieves highly accurate results in reconstructing the objects into their original forms, in spite of absent pieces.

      • The Exchange-Correlation Field Effect over the Magnetoacoustic-Gravitational Instability in Plasmas

        Rasheed, A.,Jamil, M.,Jung, Young-Dae,Sahar, A.,Asif, M. De Gruyter 2017 Zeitschrift für Naturforschung. A, A journal Vol.72 No.10

Jeans instability with magnetosonic perturbations is discussed in quantum dusty magnetoplasmas. The quantum and smaller thermal effects are associated only with electrons. The quantum characteristics include exchange-correlation potential, recoil effect, and Fermi degenerate pressure. The multifluid model of plasmas is used for the analytical study of this problem. The significant contribution of electron exchange is noticed on the threshold value of wave vector and Jeans instability. The presence of electron exchange and correlation effects reduce the time to stabilise the phenomenon of self-gravitational collapse of massive species. The results of Jeans instability by magnetosonic perturbations at quantum scale help to disclose the details of the self-gravitating dusty magnetoplasma systems.

      • A New Approach Towards Aggregation in VANET

        ( Rasheed Hussain ),( Fizza Abbas ),( Junggab Son ),( Sangjin Kim ),( Heekuck Oh ) 한국정보처리학회 2013 한국정보처리학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.20 No.2

Advancements in automobile industries and the communication technologies caused VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc NETwork) to evolve to VANET-based clouds before its deployment. It is more likely that VANET clouds will replace the traditional VANET in the deployment phase. It is to be noted that an abrupt deployment is out of question because it would require mass of resources and money to do so; instead incremental deployment is more ideal. In this paper, we aim at the incremental deployment phase of VANET clouds and focus on the well-established public transport networks. Data aggregation is one of the essential aspects in traditional VANET and has been researched for quite long time. However the previously proposed schemes are still controversial. Keeping in mind the time and space prediction of public buses, we leverage these buses as potential aggregators and MG (Mobile Gateways) in VANET clouds. Buses gather cooperative whereabouts information from neighbors, aggregate that information, disseminate it to the neighbor MGs and also send it to the cloud for storage and for services exchange. In our proposed scheme, we believe that the dissemination will be effective and cover most of the urban area since at any instant of time; buses cover most part of the urban areas. Besides, the effective transmission range is higher due to tall buses

A Secure and Privacy-Aware Route Tracing and Revocation Mechanism in VANET-based Clouds

        Rasheed Hussain(후세인 라쉬드),Heekuck Oh(오희국) 한국정보보호학회 2014 정보보호학회논문지 Vol.24 No.5

Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) has gone through a rich amount of research and currently is making its way towards the deployment. However, surprisingly it evolved to rather more applications and services-rich breed referred to as VANET-based clouds due to the advancements in the automobile and communication technologies. Security and privacy have always been the challenges for the think tanks to deploy this technology on mass scale. It is even worse that some security issues are orthogonally related to each other such as privacy, revocation and route tracing. In this paper, we aim at a specific VANET-based clouds framework proposed by Hussain et al. namely VANET using Clouds (VuC) where VANET and cloud infrastructure cooperate with each other in order to provide VANET users (more precisely subscribers) with services. We specifically target the aforementioned conflicted privacy, route tracing, and revocation problem in VANET-based clouds environment. We propose a multiple pseudonymous approach for privacy reasons and leverage the beacons stored in the cloud infrastructure for both route tracing and revocation. In the proposed scheme, revocation authorities after colluding, can trace the path taken by the target node for a specified timespan and can also revoke the identity if needed. Our proposed scheme is secure, conditional privacy preserved, and is computationally less expensive than the previously proposed schemes.

Formulation, standardization and pharmacological evaluation of a poly herbal traditional remedy -Ashwagandharishtam

        Rasheed, Arun,Roja, C.,Reddy, G. Avinash Kumar,Reddy, B. Sravya 경희한의학연구센터 2012 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.12 No.1

Ayurvedic formulations were considered the best and safer alternatives for synthetic drugs. But the demand to such products is diminishing due to lack of standardization. Ashwagandharishtam, a fermented kind of ayurvedic formulation, is used to treat epilepsy, nervous disorders, skin diseases, immune disorders and rheumatism. In the present study, the standardization of Ashwagandharishtam using sophisticated techniques were attempted for assessing the quality and safety of herbal products involved in it. It was formulated according to a working formula and its physicochemical, pharmacological and biological parameters were determined. The results of physicochemical studies showed that the values were under acceptable limits as per the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeial specifications. FTIR studies of formulation revealed the presence of functional groups similar to Ashwagandha powder. The heavy metal content in the formulation is determined using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. HPTLC reports proved the presence of biomarker, withanolide-A in ashwagandharishtam which helped in its chemical standardization. The anti-epileptic activity of ashwagandharishtamwas evaluated by Maximal electro shock (MES) method in rats. It exhibited a dose dependent significant (P<0.001) reduction in various phases of epileptic seizures when compared with that of standard phenytoin. It was also assessed for its anti inflammatory activity in carrageen induced paw edema method which showed a good activity comparable to standard thus making it biologically standardized.
