Intraneural Venous Malformations of the Median Nerve

Porto, Sara Alicia Gonzalez,Rodriguez, Alba Gonzalez,Miguez, Jose Midon Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2016 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.43 No.4

Venous malformations arising from the peripheral nerve are a rare type of vascular malformation. We present the first case of an intraneural venous malformation of the median nerve to be reported in a child and review the previous two cases of median nerve compression due to a venous malformation that have been reported. These cases presented with painless masses in the volar aspect of the wrist or with symptoms suggestive of carpal tunnel syndrome. Clinical suspicion should lead to the use of Doppler ultrasonography as the first-line diagnostic tool. Magnetic resonance imaging and histopathology can confirm the diagnosis, as phleboliths are pathognomonic of venous malformations. Surgical treatment appears to be the only modality capable of successfully controlling the growth of an intraneural malformation. Sclerotherapy and radiotherapy have never been used to treat this type of malformation.

      • EU Trade with Korea: From Deficit to Surplus A Gravity Approach to Assess the Impact of the EU-Korea FTA on Bilateral Trade

        ( Massimiliano Porto ) 한국EU학회 2018 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.16 No.2

After five years of implementation of the EU-Korea Free-Trade Agreement (FTA), the European Union (EU) was able to turn consistent and persistent trade deficits with South Korea into a surplus, signalling the positive effects of the EU-Korea FTA on the EU exports to South Korea. On the other hand, Korean expectations were not met. Some reasons for this unexpected result for South Korea include the economic recession in Europe, South Korea’s concentrated export structure, and the relocation of Korean firms’ production base abroad. However, it should be noted that the EU-Korea FTA produced positive effects on South Korea in these years as it could prevent further reduction of Korean exports to the EU. Using latest best practices in the gravity model literature, I examine the impact of the EU-Korea FTA on EU-Korea trade through a gravity model consisting of 100 countries over the period 2004-2016, at aggregated and disaggregated level, and for each EU member. The breakdown at disaggregated data and for each EU member enable a better understanding about which lines of commodities and countries benefitted more from the EU-Korea FTA.

      • Culture and Tourism -Perspectives of Foreigners on the Brazilian Carnival-

( Aluisio Finazzi Porto ) 세계문화관광학회 2010 International Journal of Culture and tourism Resea Vol.3 No.1

The objective of this work is to try and gain a better understanding about the motives that lead a tourist to visit Brazil, an also to gauge the final perception of the tourist about their visit. The question “why do people travel to Brazil” is complex, involving cultural and psychological aspects (like the attraction for latin culture or for the tropical heat), transport, availability of tourist facilities, distance, motivation and economic considerations. All of this we call the “tourist experience”. There is also the fact to be considered, revisit rate, by the tourist, to Brazil is high. In 2006, 64% of the tourists interviewed by Embratur, already had visited the country at least one time. That shows a high fidelity for the quality of the Brazilian reception. What is the reason for this fidelity, how does it happen, also what is the final image the foreign tourist has about Brazil, these are the foci of the research in question. One of the major reasons for the image of Brazil in the outside world, as well as being the period with the most visits by foreign tourists, Carnival is by definition a focus of the research.

Porcine lymphotropic herpesvirus (Gammaherpesvirinae) DNA in free-living wild boars (Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) in Brazil

        Gisele S. Porto,Raquel A. Leme,Alais M. Dall Agnol,Tatiana C.G.D. de Souza,Amauri A. Alfieri,Alice F. Alfieri 대한수의학회 2021 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.22 No.6

Background: Suid gammaherpesvirus 3, 4, and 5 (porcine lymphotropic herpesvirus – PLHV-1, -2, and -3) are viruses that infect domestic and feral pigs. Objectives: This study examined the presence of PLHV DNA in biological samples from free-living wild boars circulating in a Brazilian geographical region with a high density of commercial domestic pigs. Methods: Lung samples of 50 free-living wild boars were collected by exotic wildlife controller agents between 2017 and 2019 in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. Lung and spleen fragments were obtained from six fetuses collected by hysterectomy post mortem from a pregnant sow. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using consensus primers (pan-herpesviruses) was performed to detect PLHV DNA. The samples showing positive results for PLHV DNA were submitted to single-round PCR assays with the specific primers for identifying PLHV-1 (213-S/215-As), PLHV-2 (208-S/212-As), and PLHV-3 (886s/886As). The specificity of the species-specific PCR products was assessed by nucleotide sequencing of the amplicons. Results: Forty-eight (96%) of the 50 lung samples analyzed were positive for PLHV by PCR using pan-herpesvirus primers. In 33 (68.75%) of the positive samples, at least two PLHV species were identified simultaneously. The DNA of PLHV-1, -2, and -3 was found in free-living wild boars of all ages, but not in the fetuses, even though they were from a sow that tested positive for all three viruses. Conclusion: These viruses are endemic to the population of feral pigs in the Brazilian region evaluated, as well as in domesticated pigs.

Mineral content in fishes in the lower course of the itapecuru river in the state of Maranhão, Brazil

Heliene Leite Ribeiro Porto,Antonio Carlos Leal de Castro,James Werllen de Jesus Azevedo,Leonardo Silva Soares,Cássia Fernanda Chagas Ferreira,Marcelo Henrique Lopes Silva,Helen Roberta Silva Ferreira 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.7

Concentrations of calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, selenium and nickel were determined in the muscle tissue of seven species of fish (Plagioscion squamosissimus, Geophagus surinamensis, Prochilodus lacustres, Curimata sp., Schizodon dissimilis, Ageneiosus ucayalensis and Hypostomus plecostomus) collected from the lower course of the Itapecuru River in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. The samples were digested in a nitricperchloric solution and analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer, with the construction of specific calibration curves for each element. The highest concentrations of constituent minerals were found for phosphorus, potassium, nickel and magnesium (399.83, 144.60, 90.20 and 29.49mg 100 g−1, respectively) in G. surinamensi, P. lacustres and Curimata sp. The lowest concentrations were found for copper, zinc, iron and selenium (0.12, 0.51, 1.05 and 8.31mg 100 g−1, respectively) in Curimata sp., S. dissimilis, A. ucayalensis and P. squamosissimus. The concentrations of all minerals can be considered low and are below the maximum limit established by Brazilian legislation for the human ingestion of fish meat. A comparison of the seven species of fish investigated revealed no statistically significant differences regarding the concentrations of minerals, suggesting that size and different dietary habits do not exert an influence on absorption. The low concentrations of metals, such as Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni, may be related to the environmental conditions of the mouth of the river, which receives ocean inputs that produce particular tide cycles with a strong dispersion capacity, thereby diminishing residence time in the water column and reducing the availability of these metals to species of fish.

Reliability of panoramic radiography in predicting proximity of third molars to the mandibular canal: A comparison using cone-beam computed tomography

Nunes, Willy James Porto,Vieira, Aline Lisboa,de Abreu Guimaraes, Leticia Drumond,de Alcantara, Carlos Eduardo Pinto,Verner, Francielle Silvestre,de Carvalho, Matheus Furtado Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2021 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.51 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the reliability of 7 panoramic radiographic signs for predicting proximity of the root apices of mandibular third molars to the mandibular canal using cone-beam computed tomography and to correlate these findings with the Pell and Gregory and the Winter classification systems. Materials and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted on 74 patients with bilateral impacted mandibular third molars. Four panoramic radiographic signs were observed in the tooth root (darkening, deflection, and narrowing of the root apices, and bifid apices), and another 3 in the mandibular canal (diversion, narrowing, and interruption of the mandibular canal). Cone-beam computed tomography images were analyzed to identify disruption and diversion of the mandibular canal and root deflection. Results: Binary logistic regression showed that only 4 of the 7 panoramic radiographic signs were able to predict proximity of the root apices of the mandibular third molars to the mandibular canal: darkening of the root, deflection of the root, narrowing of the root, and interruption of the mandibular canal(P<0.05). Conclusion: Darkening, deflection, and narrowing of the root, in tandem with the interruption of the mandibular canal on panoramic radiographs, indicate that cone-beam computed tomography should be performed when planning the extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. Proximity between mandibular third molars and the mandibular canal is correlated with the Winter classification.

Energy Efficient Dynamic Resource Allocation for Wireless Systems Using Receiver Puncturing Technique

김해식,Gabriel Porto Villardi,Jing Ma 한국통신학회 2018 Journal of communications and networks Vol.20 No.4

Given the massive increase in network infrastructure requiredto provide the high capacities expected in current wirelesssystems due to the exponential growth in mobile data consumption, substantial improvement in energy efficiency of the current 4G systemsis necessary. High energy efficiency results in low operationalcost and sustainable network deployment. In this paper, we proposea new receiver puncturing technique and a novel energy efficientdynamic resource allocation scheme. Improvements in BERperformance and 20% 25% transmit-energy expenditure reduction,as compared to conventional proportional fair resourceallocation schemes, are shown by both link level and system levelsimulations of a multi-cell downlink orthogonal frequency-divisionmultiple access (OFDMA) system. Finally, the complexity issuesinherent to the proposed technique are also evaluated.
