Therapeutic Function of Christian Education: Healing Effects of Teaching

Meerha Hahn 한국기독교교육정보학회 2003 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.4 No.-

The idea for this paper originated from the healing ministry of Jesus. Healing was a divine protocol to make people believe what Jesus said. This paper argues that Christian teachers can play the role of healers. The teacher's therapeutic value to the student may take different forms, for example, problem solving, counseling, face-to-face dialogue, participating in small group work, on-line chatting, talking to a class, reading the Bible, watching a video together, sharing a meal at the table, or visiting a prison cell. Healing and teaching were ways and means for Jesus to verify the coming of God's reign. Likewise, Christian teachers today need to realize that they, too, can heal through their educational efforts.<br/> Three tasks in this paper address the therapeutic function of Christian education. first, the biblical exegesis of the term healing, second, theological reflection on healing, and third, four therapeutic roles of Christian education based on Jesus' healing ministry. In this paper, I have proposed four functional roles of Christian education for healing. They are basically the four different types of healing that Jesus used for teaching the coming of the kingdom of God' to raise up, to open the eyes to light, to cast out evil spirits, and to give or bring to life.<br/> Pedagogical healing may be new jargon. However, it deals with divine healing. This paper has attempted to promote a new way of Christian teaching involving diverse dimensions. No matter what we introduce in terms of instructional methodology, the aim is ultimately focusing on and rendering experiences of the reign of God. Simply put, healing in this paper refers to the divine healing where the reign of God is to be experienced. The author believes that teachers should take on the role of healers and have a full commitment toward healing and caring. Care should be the pre- and post- healing or symbiotic act. The term, pedagogical healing, denotes that students can be healed by teaching, while learning. It can be specified in the four ways of healing as described above. The ultimate purpose of pedagogical healing is to restore a right relationship between the healed and God.

        Teaching the Truth in Love

Meerha Hahn 한국기독교교육정보학회 2014 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.25

Today`s Christian teachers seem to be classified into two categories: “love” types, and “truth” types. In our classroom setting, the teacher must not underestimate the conflict caused by the ambivalence and the tension between love and truth. Reviewing the various theories of love, two attributes are found to describe the love of God. The first word is hesed, a Hebrew word meaning loving-kindness, care, waiting, mercy, friendship, affection, and devotion. The second term is agape, a Greek word meaning mercy, unconditional love, care, kindness, and limitless concern. This paper also seeks for a peaceful teaching method that makes both teacher and student happy in the classroom. There are two dimensions to hesed: hesed of humans and hesed of God. God made the covenant with His chosen people in Israel. God never changed his mind to the people he chose over time, though they sometimes violated the covenant. God is the Maker of the covenant, and has kept His promise. So the teacher should follow what God did for the Israelites. God is faithful and steadfast, so the same must be true for teachers.

Emerging Concepts of Leadership for Modern Church Focused on Barack Hussein Obama

Meerha Hahn 한국기독교교육정보학회 2009 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.15

This essay has two purposes. First is to investigate the recent trends and theories in leadership studies. Second is to take U.S. President Barack H. Obama’s leadership as an example of new generation’s leadership and to conduct biblical reflections on it. The concept of leadership has changed in modern business firms. In the business world it begins to draw a line between a leader and a manager. In this context, it settles the concept of leadership as an empowering behavior by sharing a vision in which followers realize it themselves not by compulsory means. In this essay four theories (trait, situation, mixed and transactional leadership theory) in understanding leadership were shortly reviewed. So it is better to define leadership as a series of organizational activities rather than some special traits of an individual. President Obama is surely a new leadership icon of our times. Some of his speeches were selected and interpreted in light of Biblical perspectives according to the four key words which appeared frequently during his election campaign: insight, change, hope, and inclusiveness. Five ideas can be presented as the emerging leadership concepts for the modern church leaders. Many young people want to resemble Obama. Despite the cynicism, his popularity does not seem to cool down. That is because his authenticity, his honesty, and his magnanimity made people inspiring.

        Three Ways of Interpreting Jesus

Meerha Hahn 한국기독교교육정보학회 2004 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.5

The putpose of this paper is to examine three selected findings of research of the historical Jesus. Specifically, the paper investigates three attributes of the historical Jesus. First, the life of Jesus as a human being will be illustrated in light of a multicultural anthropological perspective, framed by Crossan's work, The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant. Second, Jesus' struggle against the human situation will be interpreted in light of liberation theology, framed by Sobrino's The Epiphany of the God in the Life of Jesus of Nazareth. Lastly, the resurrection of Jesus will be discussed by comparing different views from Pagels' Gnostic Gospels. The findings are listed as follows.<br/> First, Jesus deliberately conjoined magic and meal, miracle and table, free compassion and open commensality. This was a challenge not only to Jewish purity regulations, but also to the Mediterranean's patriarchal culture. Thus, Jesus' life was as unacceptable in the first century, as it would be in practice today. Crossan concludes that the cause of Jesus' death, therefore, could be found in his provocative life rather than in one specific event immediately preceding his death.<br/> Second, Jesus' public ministry was aimed at unmasking false divinities by announcing the good news of the reign of God. However, Jesus announced life first to those who had it least. God has a preferential option for the poor; stressing that life is offered to the poor, and that God's salvation is directed to them, and furthermore "only to the poor," is what caused scandal among powerful minorities, and what brought about the persecution of Jesus.<br/> Third, the doctrine of Jesus' bodily resurrection serves an essential political function; it legitimizes the authority of certain men who claimto exercise exclusive leadershIp over the churches as the successors of the apostle Peter. From the second century, the doctrine served to validate the apostolic succession of bishops, which is the basis of papal authority to this day.<br/> In summary, Jesus has been an endless research topic over the decades in diverse fields of theological studies. Crossan, Sobrino and Pagels are a few of many who have attempted to define who Jesus was, is, and will be.

A Christian Education Perspective on the Effects of Cyber Pornography on Korean Adolescents

Meerha Hahn 한국기독교교육정보학회 2004 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.6

This paper examines the problems of Korean adolescents' exposure to online pornography and suggests solutions from a Christian education perspective. The paper is comprised of three sections: Korean adolescents' exposure to online pornography, biblical and theological critiques of pornography, and solutions through Christian education.<br/> Characteristics of Korean adolescent exposure to cyber pornography were examined in five parts: method of exposure, prevalence of exposure, first exposure, frequency of exposure, and types of exposure. First, adolescents are exposed to cyber pornography in one of three ways: through friends, through online serendipity, or through curiosity. Second, 67.5% of the adolescent respondents viewed pornographic material: by gender, 90.9% of males and 35.7% of females. Interestingly, 51.9% of high achievers, 62.3% of middle achievers, and 86.7% of low achievers had viewed pornography. Third, 57.9% of Korean adolescents were first exposed to pornography in the middle school years. Fourth, more than 60% of the adolescent respondents viewed pornography once a week, while 23% of the adolescents viewed it three times per week. Fifth, three types of exposure to cyber pornography have been found among Korean adolescents: l)online chatting, 2)adult-only sites, and 3)by downloading pornography via file sharing programs, such as P2P or Warez. Four harmful effects of cyber pornography on adolescents were analyzed: l)perverted sex-consciousness, 2)seduction to juvenile prostitution, 3)swapping, and 4)providing a motive for sex crimes.<br/> In biblical and theological critiques of pornography section, three points are made: biblical accounts of human sexuality, biblical precepts and pornography, and Chiristian spirituality and pornography Based on the biblical theological reflection, three resolutions are suggested: diagnosing problems and doctrinal instruction on sin, pedagogy of the decalogue for healing and Christian education for fulfilling human sexuality.<br/> If the problem is not resolved, the next generation may not be capable of maintaining social norms supporting conjugality, marriage, and family values. If proper remedial treatment is not planned by the government, the school, and the church, this issue will remain with us permanently. In order to maintain the social order of marriage and family values, Christian educators are to keep an eye on adolescents' exposure to pornography and suggest doctrinal teachings on sin and holiness, the creation of human sexuality, and the pedagogy of the Decalogue.
