Vol.0 No.4

This paper recounts the knowledge production process of Japanese colonial discourse and its impact on contemporary identity politics in Taiwan. I first analyze and compare the distinct textual features and historical contexts of two most famous Japanese texts on colonial Taiwan, namely Takekoshi Yosaburo's Japanese Rule in Formosa(1905) and Yanaihara Tadao's Taiwan Under Imperialism(l929). The paper then discusses their continuing influences on post-war debates regarding colonial modernity that exemplify complex competition, negotiation and confrontation between Chinese and Taiwanese nationalism in the course of political democratization and in digenization. The conclusion further reflects on the questions of Taiwan's de-colonization, post-colonialism and nationalism in the age of globalization.

      • Realization of the Butterfly Stroke by the Swimming Humanoid Robot

The objective of this study is to realize the butterfly stroke by the swimming humanoid robot, SWUMANOID. To further clarify the mechanisms of human swimming motion, a full-body humanoid robot in a half size scale with 24 actuated motors was developed. Computer simulations through the SWUM program were conducted to raise feasibility and to preliminarily investigate the basic characteristics of the butterfly stroke motion. In a stroke cycle time of 1.584s, the swimming speed result was 0.32㎧ in the simulation. The simulation results were then validated through swimming experiments of the robot in a 25m swimming pool. With the same cycle time, the results were much slower compared to the simulation, where the swimming speed was measured at 0.083㎧ average. The cause of this discrepancy was the failure of the recovery stroke. It was verified that robot was able to produce propulsive force with the butterfly stroke. With further improvements, it will be possible for the butterfly stroke to be realized in the future.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Increases Peritonsillar Abscess Susceptibility: Real-World Evidence

        Ching-Lung Wu,Ming-Shao Tsai,Ta-Jen Lee,Yun-Ting Wang,Chia-Yen Liu,Yao-Hsu Yang,Yao-Te Tsai,Cheng-Ming Hsu,Ching-Yuan Wu,Pey-Jium Chang,Geng-He Chang 2021 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.14 No.3

Objectives. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for deep neck infection (DNI) and leads to complications and poor outcomes. Our study aimed to investigate the risk, prognosis, and complications of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) in patients with T2DM. Methods. We extracted data of patients newly diagnosed as having T2DM between January 2000 and December 2011 from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database. These patients were matched with patients without T2DM, and PTA incidence was compared between both cohorts. Results. In total, 67,852 patients with and 135,704 patients without T2DM were enrolled. PTA incidence was significantly higher in patients with T2DM (incidence rate ratio, 1.91; P<0.001); moreover, PTA incidence was higher at 1 to 5 years after T2DM diagnosis than at <1 and >5 years after T2DM diagnosis. Cox regression analysis showed that patients with T2DM had an approximately 2-fold higher PTA risk (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.89, P<0.001). Patients with a higher adapted Diabetes Complications Severity Index (aDCSI) had higher PTA risk than those with a lower aDCSI (aHRs: 2.17 for aDCSI ≥1, P=0.006 and 1.81 for aDCSI=0, P=0.002). T2DM patients with a high aDCSI (≥1) had a nonsignificantly longer hospitalization duration and a higher rate of DNI complications than did those with a low aDCSI (=0). Conclusion. In patients with T2DM, PTA incidence was relatively high, and it increased with T2DM severity. Moreover, T2DM patients should be particularly careful about PTA within 1 to 5 years after the diagnosis, and physicians should keep in mind that the prognosis of PTA was correlated with T2DM severity.

      • THE BUSINESS IMPACT AND CHARACTERISTICS OF CHILDREN’S EWOM IN MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

        Tong (Tony) Bao,Tung-lung Steven Chang,Alex J. Kim 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2016 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2016 No.7

In recent years, leading digital technology companies have shown a strong interest in enabling children to send electronic word of mouth (eWOM). Recasting children from passive to active participants in marketing communications, this shift expands children’s marketing practices from how a company influences children via traditional marketing communications to how children influence a company’s marketing practices through eWOM. This paper aims to enhance our understanding about the use of children’s eWOM in marketing communications when children’s eWOM and children’s marketing begin to intersect. The eWOM literature demonstrated the effects of eWOM on product sales without identifying the sender (King, Racherla, & Bush, 2014). The extension of the effects from aggregated sender to children needs careful study in light of children’s marketing literature which showed children have distinct characteristics in the context of traditional marketing (Cross, 2002). In this study, we examine the positive expectation of business impact that explains firms’ adoption of children’s eWOM and further investigate the normative concerns about the social influence of children’s eWOM.

        A Three-Phase AC-DC High Step-up Converter for Microscale Wind-power Generation Systems

        Lung-Sheng Yang,Chia-Ching Lin,En-Chih Chang 전력전자학회 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.5

In this paper, a three-phase AC-DC high step-up converter is developed for application to microscale wind-power generation systems. Such an AC-DC boost converter prossessess the property of the single-switch high step-up DC-DC structure. For power factor correction, the advanced half-stage converter is operated under the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). Simulatanously, to achieve a high step-up voltage gain, the back half-stage functions in the continuous conduction mode (CCM). A high voltage gain can be obtained by use of an output-capacitor mass and a coupled inductor. Compared to the output voltage, the voltage stress is decreased on the switch. To lessen the conducting losses, a low rated voltage and small conductive resistance MOSFETs are adopted. In addition, the coupled inductor retrieves the leakage-inductor energy. The operation principle and steady-state behavior are analyzed, and a prototype hardware circuit is realized to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

      • HOW TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN BRAND RECOGNITION AND CUSTOMER PERCEIVED VALUE IN THE DIGITAL AGE?

2023 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2023 No.07

While social media marketing opens a variety of new windows for enlightening brand–customer relationships, a gritty puzzle is that brand recognition does not invariably echo with customers’ perceived value. This provokes the need to uncover the missing pieces in bridging the gap between brand recognition and customer perceived value. This research falls within the innovative new work in the marketing literature in positing co-creation as a crucial mediator in facilitating the impact of brand recognition on customers’ perceived value. Based on social identity theory, we also investigated how co-creation is moderated by virtual communication identification in influencing customers’ perceived value towards a brand. We conducted a survey via a sample of 386 current Gogoro customers. Gogoro is the biggest and most well-known Taiwanese producer of electric scooters. Our findings contribute to the extant marketing research by emphasizing that the key stimulus of increased customer perceived value towards a brand is active co-creation initiatives via virtual brand communities, and that the effects of co-creation are further strengthened when customers’ virtual communication identification is high.
