Proceedings of international Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 44-64, 1999.-Cordyceps sinensis is a major parasitic fungus on larva of Lepidoptera. It is one of the well know fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment asthma, lung and kideney diseases. Many fungi belonging to the genus Cordyceps have been demonstrated to produce natural products with various biological activities. Reported biological activities of genus cordyceps include:(a)inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis;(b)enhancement of cell differentiation;(c)restruction of cytoskeleton;(d)inhibition of protein kinase activity;(e)antitumor activity on bladder, colon, lung carcinoma as well as fibroblastoma;(f)inhibition of the infection and revers transciptase activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1; and(g) inhibition of methylation of nucleic acid. Thus, it is suggested that the extracts of Cordyceps sp. Contain antitumor, antiviral, and many other biological activities. In our previous studies, we proved that C. sinensis contains the antitumor and immunomodulatory agents. In the present studies, effects of C. sinensis on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids(BAL)cells were demonstrated. The crude methanolic extracts of C. sinensis were fractionated into 15 fractions by silica gel column chromatography. Effects of various fraction on BAL cells proliferation and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) stimulated interleukin-1β(IL-8),platelet activating factor(PAF), interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-8(IL-8) production on BAL cells were determined. The result indicated that the CS-19-22 fraction suppressed BAL cells proliferation activated by LPS. The median inhibitory concentration(IC50) was 6㎍/ml. The CS-19-22 fraction also decreased IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-αand IL-8 production.The results of revers transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) demonstrated that the CS-19-22 fraction did not affect IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-α,and IL-8 mRNAs expression in BAL cells activated by LPS. By contrast, it inhibited the IL-10 mRNA expression but enhanced IFN-γand IL-12 mRNAs expression in activated BAL cells. Moreover, the CS-19-22 fraction blocked PAF-induced platelet aggregation. It is unlikely that cytotoxicity was involved. Because no cell deths were observable. We hypothesize that inhibitory mechanisms of CS-19-22 on BAL cells proliferation may be related to the impairments of gene expression and production of cytokines in BAL cells. The explanation of C. sinensis antiasthma function may involved the following(1)C.sinenesis contained immunomodulatory agents that stimulated IFN-γand IL-12 expression in TH1cells.(2)Enhanced secretion of IFN-γand IL-12 will inhibit the Tγcells immune responses Ex. Decreasing of IL-6 and IL-10 production.(3) The impairments of cytokines production in TH2 cells suppressed th BAL cells proliferation then more cytokines production Ex.IL-1β,PAF,IL-6,TNF-αand IL-8 in activated BAL cells were decreased. (4)The suppression of TH2cells immune responses will inhibit the growth and differentiation of B cells then IgE production will be decreased. (5)Reduced production of IgE will decreased asthma attack occurring in individuals. However, the results of the present study suggested that C. sinensis may also have acted to treat asthma in part by inhibiting BAL cells proliferation and cytokine gene expression and production. Future, experiments with treatment of animals with asthma with C. sinensis will be necessary to defined whether C. sinensis can reduce asthma injury. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure principal growth inhibitors and their mechanisms of action are subjected for further study.

        A Statistical Framework for Characterizing the Nanotube Buckypaper Manufacturing Process

        This study develops a statistical framework for characterizing an improved Buckypaper manufacturing process. A screening procedurebased on design of experiment techniques and the Lenth method was used to identify significant process parameters. These parameterssignificantly affect the tensile strength of the Buckypaper produced by the process. The procedure only samples a limited number ofexperimental runs. A linear regression model and a nonlinear model based on the Kriging method were constructed to characterizethe relationship between the parameters and tensile strength. Tradeoff curves were used to determine the best parameter settings whensimultaneously considering the mean and variance of the tensile strength. Validation tests show that both models are better predictorsthan previous models and the nonlinear model outperforms the linear model. The statistical framework provides a systematic andeffective method of characterizing the manufacture of nanotube products.

      • A Hierarchy Model of Quality-, Recognition-, Elite-oriented Beliefs with Value, and Behavioural Intention of Luxury Goods Consumption

        Purpose - The luxury market has grown steadily in recent years, According to Bain & Company (2014) report, the overall luxury market size will achieve €265 billion by 2017, accompanying with the 4% to 6% sustainable growth, Research in this field has gradually begun to focus on an in depth analysis of consumer conspicuous consumption behavior, The purpose of this paper is to explore the complete framework with beliefs-value-intention chain from a socio-economic perspective, Design/methodology/approach - This study proposed an integrated model for consumer conspicuous consumption by combining a hierarchy model of luxury goods proposed by Alleres (1990) and value theory (Babin et al, 1994), Firstly, this paper collected and summarized the consumer beliefs of luxury goods from extant studies, and thus, conducted a pilot study to confirm the structure and the interrelationships among those consumer beliefs, corresponding to the Alleres hierarchy model of social identity, Based on the exploratory study, this study developed a hierarchy framework of consumer perceptions of luxury goods, including quality-oriented beliefs, recognition-oriented beliefs, and elite-oriented beliefs, Secondly, the researchers proposed the research model and developed postulated hypotheses, With 316 valid samples from a web-based survey, this paper employed the confirmatory factor analysis for measurement reliability and validity, Thus, partial least squares structural equation modeling was conducted to assess the integrated model, Findings -Based on the analysis, the findings shown that consumer with higher quality-oriented beliefs had the strongest effect on hedonic value, followed by the effects of elite-oriented and recognition-oriented beliefs, In contrary, consumers with higher elite-oriented beliefs had the strongest effect on the utilitarian value, followed by the effects of recognition-oriented and quality-oriented beliefs, Furthermore, both utilitarian and hedonic values have positive effects on behavioral intention to buy luxury goods, The effect of hedonic value on intention to buy luxury goods was stronger than the effect of utilitarian value, Practical implications - The finding revealed that consumers with different weight of beliefs contribute to diversified weights of consumer value, leading them to behave their conspicuous consumptions, Managers should position their luxury product clearly and develop different promotions toward their target markets, Indeed, not only the needs of the higher social status or financial success evoke consumer resonance, but the feeling of fulfillment that (luxury consumption provides should also be something that) marketers should highlight Practitioner should emphasize the affect elements when designing the market strategy and advertising activities, Originality/value - This paper identified the consumer beliefs of luxury goods which corresponded to the Alleres□s (1990) hierarchy model of social identity, and examined its effects on the core values (hedonic value and utilitarian value) based on the value theory.

      • Application of Data Quality Indicator of Carbon Footprint and Water Footprint

        To mitigate the impact of global warming on the environment, many governments, non-profit organizations, and enterprises have formulated relevant standards to assist enterprises in promoting carbon management, and to encourage the design and popularization of low-carbon products. These standards include: PAS 2050, ISO/TS 14067 and so on. Under these initiatives, enterprises try to disclose the carbon and water footprints of the products based on the life cycle. Some enterprises argue and debate that there exists uncertainty of the footprints calculation since the data collection is not systematically. To solve this problem, in this research, the calculation of carbon footprint and water footprint are evaluated with the data quality indicator (DQI) management system. The collected data is evaluated based on the footprint calculation methods. Also the pedigree matrix is constructed as an aide to solve the data uncertainty that included reliability, completeness, times, geography, and technologies differences. Through the DQI, the carbon footprint and water footprint are not only calculated simultaneously, but also correctly. The results could be the reference for products’ environmental improvement.

        Risk Management of Hazardous Substances in Selection of Green Suppliers

        In order to satisfy customer requirements to comply with the control of hazardous substances (HS), most suppliers have developed a twofold strategy comprising certified document review and online testing. Nevertheless, many suppliers remain far from complying,collecting, and managing such data efficiently. They encounter significant challenges and risks in screening all the hazardous substance contained in received components as part of the green part approval management (GPAM) process. The present study developed a failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) for component risk, based on component types. In addition, suppliers’ HS control performance is further evaluated, based on FMEA and X-bar control chart. The results indicate the risk level for each supplier. Finally, the proposed FMEA model is applied to a case study of an electronics supplier.

        Psoas Abscess Caused by Non-Typhoid Salmonella in a Patient with Severe Aplastic Anemia

        The clinical spectrum of infections caused by non-typhoid Salmonella spp. includes gastroenteritis, enteric fever,bacteremia, and extraintestinal localized complications, especially in immunocompromised hosts. Here we report a patient with severe aplastic anemia developing left iliopsoas abscess caused by non-typhoid Salmonella (NTS),which was successfully treated by prolonged antibiotic treatment and repeated debridement. Our data indicate that aplastic anemia is a risk factor for infection caused by NTS.

        Integrating Robust Design Criteria and Axiomatic Design Principles to Support Sustainable Product Development

        In order to move towards a goal of sustainability, many enterprises have developed sustainable products. When responding to sustainable product development, many enterprises have found that most engineers and designers have often not been trained in sustainability, since it covers multidisciplinary viewpoints. There are two streams concerning sustainable products: work on conventional new product development and work on sustainable management. Therefore, this research integrates these two different design criteria and guidelines and forms a development process. With this development process, designers can develop sustainable products more easily and effectively.
