        Prenatal ultarsound represents an accurate and reliable method for the detection of intrauterine anomalies, especially urinary tract anomalies. Hydronephrosis is the most common congenital condition detected by prenatal ultrasound. Prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis allows a good condition and therapeutic assessment of the patients prior to serious impairment of renal function so that in most cases the urological surgeon can opt for a parenchymal conserving procedure. The authors have experienced a case of congenital ureteropelvic obstruction with hydronephrosis diagnosed at 32 weeks of pregnancy and report our experience with a brief review of literature.

        김은국의 『순교자』에 나타난 희생양 메커니즘 의 작동과 해체

        김은국의 『순교자』는 희생양 메커니즘의 특징인 박해자의 ‘무지’와 폭력의‘맹목성’을 폭로한다. 1950년 한국전쟁이 발발하기 전 평양에서 목사들이 실종된 사건을 정치적으로 이용하려는 ‘장 대령’의 거짓말은, 지라르가 언급한 ‘첫사람의 돌 던지기’와 유사하다. 희생양 메커니즘의 작동을 유도하는 박해자 ‘장대령’을 통해 김은국은 희생양 메커니즘의 본질인 폭력성을 선명하게 보여준다. 작품의 중반부에서부터 서사는 “박해자에게서 희생양에게로, 그 사건을 만든 자에게서 그것을 참고 견딘 자에게로” 초점을 옮겨, 이 작품을 희생양의 텍스트로 만든다. 김은국의 영적 통찰력은 희생양 신 목사의 고뇌하는 내면, ‘신의 침묵에 절망할 수밖에 없는’ 희생양의 목소리를 생생하게 전달하였다. 신을 믿지 않는다는 처절한 절망 가운데서 ‘신 목사’는 끊임없이 기도함으로써 ‘가장 보잘 것 없는 사람들’에게 돌아가라는 예수의 명령을 실천하게 된다. 이 과정에서 궁극적으로 드러나는 것은 ‘신의 개입’이다. 무력하고 병든 모습으로, ‘희생양 메커니즘’의 작동을 중단시키려는 ‘신 목사’라는 캐릭터는 김은국의 종교적 투시력을 높이 평가할 근거가 된다. KIM Eun-Kook`s The Martyred exposes the persecutor`s ignorance and the blindness of violence, which mirrors Rene Girard`s ‘scapegoat mechanism.’ The lies of Colonel Chang can be regarded as similar to people who throw stones and lead to the operation of the scapegoat mechanism. KIM pinpoints the nature of violence as the essence of the scapegoat mechanism and converts his novel by setting up a first-person narrative. In the middle of the novel, the narration shifts its focus from the persecutor towards the scapegoat and from the person having the affair to the person enduring it. KIM`s spiritual insight clearly conveys the turmoil inside the mind of the scapegoat, Reverend Shin. However, the helpless Reverend Shin, who puts into practice Jesus` commands of helping “the least of these” people and attempts to thwart the operation of the ‘scapegoat mechanism,’ would be remembered for a long time along with the truth that the novel attempts to convey.

      • Intra-articular synovial lipoma in the posteromedial compartment of the knee

        Intra-articular synovial lipoma of the knee joint is exceedingly rare. Although there has been one documented case of an open excision in Korean literature, our report presents a first description treated entirely by arthroscopic methods. A 37-year-old female patient suffered from a catching or intermittent locking of the knee, like a loose body. The arthroscopy revealed a globular, yellowish tumor extending from the posteromedial capsule into the joint space. The mass was around the posterior horn of the medial meniscus and showed signal intensity similar to subcutaneous fat on T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance images. The tumor was totally excised under arthroscopic guidance and histological examination of the specimen revealed a tumor composed of mature adipose cells covered with a thin fibrous tissue. Thus, intra-articular synovial lipoma should be considered in the differential diagnoses when examining a patient with catching or locking of the knee.

        논문 : 박완서의 『한 말씀만 하소서』에 나타난 "신의 흔적"

        In this paper, the idea of the ``trace of God`` is discussed through the mediums of death and suffering in Please Say the One Word, by novelist Park Wan-seo. In this collection of diary entries, the author refers to the phenomenology of religion and philosophy. Park shares a commonality with philosopher Emmanuel Levinas in that both struggled through extreme existential agony, while never resorting to theodicy. Park`s work can largely be divided into pre and post-1988, the turning point being the loss of her son. Faced with the unimaginable suffering of losing her only son that year, Park yearned to encounter God face-to-face. She retreated to a solitary room in a convent where she fought with countless difficult questions. It was a heartbreaking time of struggle and self-denial which she faithfully recorded in Please Say the One Word. Throughout this process, God stayed silent. And yet, "I" gradually approached the realm of fundamentality through three unexpected encounters at the convent. One day, "I" came across a nun who carries the bedpan of the patients, with a smile on her face, and "I" am confronted with a basic question of ``why I am here``. "I" transcend ``the limited thinking of a finite being`` and feel the power of God`s calling. However, "I" quickly relapse into the world of doubt and misery. Then "I" meet a young nun and learn how to accept the pain from her. Still, the extreme, unsalvageable suffering persists, and "I" violently resent God. Next, "I" meet a woman who comes to visit her daughter, the nun. And "I" feel terrible humiliation and despair that my suffering provided consolation to the woman. The unbearable suffering forces me to vomit all the food, and as the body regains its peaceful state, a realization comes that my sin was ``through indifference to others``. Then God reveals his presence in my prayers. Park`s journal suggests we can have a relationship with God only through imploring, yearning and praying. According to Levinas, this is the most fundamental form of relationship between a human and God. As a finite being, Park`s suffering and yearning does not vanish. Nevertheless, the fact that we yearn for God imbues the ``trace of God`` with meaning. In the text, the divine epiphany is shown in two expressions: Eat to live, and become what you eat. In the agony of the loss of a son, Park rediscovers what it means to be human as an entity that eats to sustain life. Eating and living are the very mediums that guide us to understand, forgive and accept others. As Park struggles with God in the human world, she finally comes to fully recognize others. Through encounters with others, she reaches divine epiphany gradually and naturally. As if putting together puzzle pieces in a given dimension of time, she vicariously experiences God`s touch and voice. The value of Please Say the One Word can be found in its depiction of epiphany, or trace of God, that creates emotional ripples in its readers` minds.
