Spectral stability of 0.9 μm standard radiation thermometer

Long term spectral characteristics of 0.9 μm radiation thermometers were studied by using a monochromator and also fixed point blackbodies. Some thermometers showed shifts in their center wavelengths. Normally the thermometers were stable within ±0.2 nm per year. The trends of the two measurements were the same but they had a small difference in the absolute values. The spectral stability of the radiation thermometers can be monitored by thesignal ratio between two fixed point blackbodies.

This paper describes an automated inspection robot for detecting tile exfoliation and a new diagnostic method for determining its existence and extent. The robot moves quickly along a vertical wall and stops to detect a tile’s inner condition using a hammering sound. Tile separation commonly comprises outer exfoliation where the tile separates from the mortar concrete and inner exfoliation where the space between the substrate and the mortar concrete deteriorates. In order to detect these two exfoliations, we focused attention on wavelet analysis, which enables us to analyze the frequency element of the sound waveform on time phase continuously. By comparing the wavelet volume rate expressing the characteristics of tile deterioration for several scale tiles and striking hammers, the quantitative detection and its scale effects of visually distinguishing the two exfoliation modes was established. The automated robot and the diagnostics method were used to perform a fast and highly accurate inspection of the outer tile wall.
Intercultural Communication through Movies: Cultural Analysis Using "The Matrix"

Movies are a veritable treasure box, which have marvelous magical power to entertain people and give them various kinds of dreams and fantasies. Seen from an English educational perspective, the "box" provides English teachers with wonderful hints in teaching for the better usages that they'd never otherwise expect. The VHS, DVD, Caption decoder and the other electric devices also make it much easier to make use of movies for English education. Linguistic acquisition, intercultural communication, and the like are passed on to students through movies. This paper is intended to show the use of movies for intercultural communication, focusing on the clear connection between the names of characters in the movie "The Matrix" and cultural analysis. "The Matrix" is taken up for this paper because it is full of abundant cultural elements through use of Judeo-Christian motif, Greek mythical reference, the Alice in Wonderland trail and names of pertinent characters. I am sure that this paper can help illustrate movies as being very useful in teaching intercultural communication as well as in linguistic acquisition.

Satellite experiments on Variable Polarization/Frequency Division Multiplexing(VPFDM)

We report the results of satellite experiments on Variable Polarization/Frequency Division Multiplexing (VPFDM) and its operational principles. VPFDM is a new multiple access method that enables each user to freely utilize dual polarization and frequency resources. No BER degradation was observed in VPFDM satellite experiments, meaning that the VPFDM modem can demodulate received signals as expected regardless of the polarization rotation angle or dynamic polarization rotation. Because of this performance, we expect VPFDM to be applied to the maritime satellite communications service called Earth Station onboard Vessel (ESV)[l][2], to which Ku band is allotted as a primary band in the WRC 2003.
