Bodies of Knowledge: Fat Studies, Fat Stigma, and Citizenship in U.S. Media Culture
( Dana Heller ) 한국영미문학페미니즘학회 2012 영미문학페미니즘 Vol.20 No.3
This essay explores the representation of the fat female body in contemporary U.S. media culture. It argues that the burgeoning interdiscipline of fat studies-as well as media images of fat women -have emerged as salient flashpoints for debate about gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and the proper parameters of citizenship. In the iconography of the mass media, the fat woman has long functioned as a site of palpable public anxiety about changes in the gendered social economy and the citizenship contract. However, some media texts challenge the stigma that is associated with fat. This essay discusses two of these texts, the television series Ugly Betty and the John Waters filmHairspray, to argue that the recent establishment of fat studies, and the positive resignification of fat women in U.S. popular culture, provides literary and media scholars with a unique opportunity to track the emergence of a new burgeoning “body” of knowledge regarding the meaning of citizenship.
Uncertainty quantification for structural health monitoring applications
Dana E. Nasr,Wael G. Slika,George A. Saad 국제구조공학회 2018 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.22 No.4
The difficulty in modeling complex nonlinear structures lies in the presence of significant sources of uncertainties mainly attributed to sudden changes in the structure’s behavior caused by regular aging factors or extreme events. Quantifying these uncertainties and accurately representing them within the complex mathematical framework of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) are significantly essential for system identification and damage detection purposes. This study highlights the importance of uncertainty quantification in SHM frameworks, and presents a comparative analysis between intrusive and non-intrusive techniques in quantifying uncertainties for SHM purposes through two different variations of the Kalman Filter (KF) method, the Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and the Polynomial Chaos Kalman Filter (PCKF). The comparative analysis is based on a numerical example that consists of a four degrees-of-freedom (DOF) system, comprising Bouc-Wen hysteretic behavior and subjected to El-Centro earthquake excitation. The comparison is based on the ability of each technique to quantify the different sources of uncertainty for SHM purposes and to accurately approximate the system state and parameters when compared to the true state with the least computational burden. While the results show that both filters are able to locate the damage in space and time and to accurately estimate the system responses and unknown parameters, the computational cost of PCKF is shown to be less than that of EnKF for a similar level of numerical accuracy.

The roots of Cichorium intybus L. (chicory) have many nutritional qualities and also have been used for health promotion as traditional medicine. The antimicrobial activity of Cichorium intybus L.`s (chicory) ethanol extract on Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876 were investigated using spot on lawn method in this study. Ethanol extract exhibited antimicrobial activities against Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876 with significance. Also, the results produced the larger zones of inhibition against Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876 tested, with increasing concentration of Cichorium intybus L.`s (chicory) ethanol extracts,. Hence, Cichorium intybus L. (chicory) could be served for keeping the safety of various dairy products as natural antimicrobial agents.
Katsura Imperial Villa: A Brief Descriptive Bibliography, with Illustrations
Dana Buntrock 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2012 Cross-Currents Vol.- No.3
There are three imperial residences in Kyoto: Gosho (京都御所), rebuilt in 1855 and used for formal affairs even today; Shūgakuin (修学院離宮), a summer retreat on mountain slopes built in the mid-seventeenth century; and Katsura Imperial Retreat (桂離宮), slightly older than Shūgakuin. Upon the death of the Hachijō imperial line in 1881, Katsura came into the hands of the reigning household; shortly afterward, the Imperial Household Ministry was formed and took responsibility for the care of such sites. Sometimes grouped with the other residences, Nijō Palace was originally built not for the imperial household but for the warriors who effectively ruled Japan from the seventeenth to the middle of the nineteenth century; today, it too is managed by the Imperial Household Agency (the scope and name of the Imperial Household Ministry having changed at the end of World War II). Of these four, Katsura, with its extensive grounds and esteemed teahouses in addition to a large, shoin-style residence, is best known of all, used both at home and abroad to illustrate arguments about architecture and national tradition. Yet even so, much remains to be said about the complex, as demonstrated by this brief descriptive bibliography.
Preparation of Bioactive Kefir with Added Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) Extract
( Dana Jeong ),( Dong-hyeon Kim ),( Jung-whan Chon ),( Kwang-young Song ),( Hyunsook Kim ),( Kun-ho Seo ) 한국유가공기술과학회 2017 Journal of Dairy Science and Biotechnology (JMSB) Vol.35 No.3
Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is an important food, oil, and fiber crop of the family Linaceae. Although flaxseed has been consumed as a food ingredient for several centuries, its nutritional benefits have not yet been completely established. Flaxseed is a good source of lignans, nonstarch polysaccharides, and high-quality proteins. Hence, in this study, we aimed to prepare a bioactive kefir containing flaxseed and to examine the physicochemical characteristics of kefir containing different concentrations of flaxseed. We investigated the pH, and sensory evaluation of bioactive Kefir containing different concentrations of flaxseed. We investigated the pH, total anthocyanins (TAs), and sensory evaluation of bioactive Kefir containing different concentrations of flaxseed. The pH of this bioactive kefir decreased, whereas the TA content increased with increasing incubation time; however, these parameters were not affected by the amount of added flaxseed. As the addition rate of flaxseed increased, the scores for overall acceptability, texture, color, flavor, and taste in sensory evaluations were generally the same as or lower than the control. There were no significant differences in overall acceptability, texture, color, flavor, and taste between the control and treated groups. Therefore, further studies are needed to develop methods for production of health-improving kefir as a dietary supplement based on the functional properties of flaxseed.
Role of Glial Cells in Axonal Regeneration
Dana Toy,남궁욱 한국뇌신경과학회 2013 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.22 No.2
Axonal regeneration is critical for functional recovery following neural injury. In addition to intrinsic differences between regenerative responses of axons in peripheral versus central nervous systems, environmental factors such as glial cells and related molecules in the extracellular matrix (ECM) play an important role in axonal regeneration. Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) are recognized as favorable factors that promote axonal regeneration, while astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS) are not. In this review, we evaluate the roles of Schwann cells and astrocytes in axonal regeneration and examine recent evidence that suggests a dual function of astrocytes in regenerative responses. We also discuss the role of Cdc2 pathways in axonal regeneration, which is commonly activated in Schwann cells and astrocytes. Greater insight on the roles of glial cells in axonal regeneration is key to establishing baseline interventions for improving functional recovery following neural injury.
