        Benign osteoblastoma of the mandible: a case report

        Osteoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm formed by osteoid tissue and well-vascularized bone that occurs mainly in children and adolescents. It appears primarily in the long bones, vertebral column, and small bones of the hands and feet, and not typically in the skull and maxillary bones. The purpose of this study is to present the case of an 8-year-old girl with a diagnosis of right mandibular osteoblastoma and a review of the relevant literature. The goals of treatment were to preserve dental occlusion, masticatory function and facial symmetry while minimizing the effects on patient body image and quality of life. Osteoblastoma, although it is benign, can be aggressive, and its treatment will depend on the timing of diagnosis, size and location. Early diagnosis is essential to avoid not only radical surgery as in the case presented, but also to help minimize the risk of possible relapse and potential malignancy of a benign osteoblastoma.

      • Robotics in Construction: Framework and Future Directions

        In recent years the construction sector has grown significantly in terms of investment and research on robotics and automation, yet it is still a low-tech and disjointed industry. One of the main scopes of this paper is to determine how robotic automation can provide the answers to the needs this industry has. To that end, an overall framework and development agenda of current technological innovation in the field has been outlined. Possible drawbacks and driving forces in the development of robots in the construction site have been identified. In addition, the review provides for state-of-the-art policies and regulations, as well as the short and medium-term outlook in different markets and countries. Ultimately, the forecast impact on traditional processes, construction sites, emerging technologies and related professions has been summarized in order to delineate prospective repercussions and future directions towards self-sufficiency.

        A Software Defined Networking Approach to Improve the Energy Efficiency of Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks

        Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks (MWSN) are usually constrained in energy supply, which makes energy efficiency a key factor to extend the network lifetime. The management of the network topology has been widely used as a mechanism to enhance the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSN), and this work presents an alternative to this. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a well-known technology in data center applications that separates the data and control planes during the network management. This paper proposes a solution based on SDN that optimizes the energy use in MWSN. The network intelligence is placed in a controller that can be accessed through different controller gateways within a MWSN. This network intelligence runs a Topology Control (TC) mechanism to build a backbone of coordinator nodes. Therefore, nodes only need to perform forwarding tasks, they reduce message retransmissions and CPU usage. This results in an improvement of the network lifetime. The performance of the proposed solution is evaluated and compared with a distributed approach using the OMNeT++ simulation framework. Results show that the network lifetime increases when 2 or more controller gateways are used.

      • Influence of the cathode catalyst layer thickness on the behaviour of an air breathing PEM fuel cell

        Fuel cells of proton exchange membrane type (PEMFC) working with hydrogen in the anode and ambient air in the cathode ('air breathing') have been prepared and characterized. The cells have been studied with variable thickness of the cathode catalyst layer ($L_{CL}$), maintaining constant the platinum and ionomer loads. Polarization curves and electrochemical active area measurements have been carried out. The polarization curves are analyzed in terms of a model for a flooded passive air breathing cathode. The analysis shows that $L_{CL}$ affects to electrochemical kinetics and mass transport processes inside the electrode, as reflected by two parameters of the polarization curves: the Tafel slope and the internal resistance. The observed decrease in Tafel slope with decreasing $L_{CL}$ shows improvements in the oxygen reduction kinetics which we attribute to changes in the catalyst layer structure. A decrease in the internal resistance with $L_{CL}$ is attributed to lower protonic resistance of thinner catalyst layers, although the observed decrease is lower than expected probably because the electronic conduction starts to be hindered by more hydrophilic character and thicker ionomer film.

        Solidification Kinetics of a Near Eutectic Al-Si Alloy, Unmodified and Modified with Sr

        The purpose of this work was to explore the differences in solidification kinetics between unmodified and Sr modified eutectic Al-Si alloy as revealed by Fourier Thermal Analysis (FTA) and grain-growth kinetics characterization. Thermal analysis were performed in cylindrical stainless steel cups coated with a thin layer of boron nitride, using two type-K thermocouples connected to a data acquisition system. Grain growth kinetics characterization was carried out using solid fraction evolution and grain density data. FTA results for the non modified and modified alloys suggest that there are changes in the solidification rate during eutectic nucleation followed, during growth, by similar solidification rate evolutions, suggesting that this parameter is governed principally by the heat extraction conditions. On the other hand the change of the grain growth parameters estimated for the experimental probes suggest that the presence of Sr may modify the relationship between grain growth rate and undercooling in eutectic Al-Si.

        Whey Versus Soy Protein Diets and Renal Status in Rats

        Different dietary protein sources can promote different renal statuses. We examined the effects of whey protein (WP) and soy protein (SP) intake on plasma, urinary, and morphological renal parameters in rats. One hundred and twenty Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 2 experimental groups fed with either WP or SP diets over 12 weeks. These diets were based on commercial WP or SP isolates. The urinary calcium content was higher in the WP diet compared to the SP diet group (P < .001) whereas the urinary citrate level was lower (P < .001). The urinary pH was more acidic in the WP diet group compared to the SP diet group (P < .001); however, no differences were observed between the groups for any of the renal morphological parameters analyzed (all, P > .05) or other plasma renal markers such as albumin or urea concentrations. The increase of acid and urinary calcium and the lower urinary citrate level observed in the WP diet group could increase the incidence of nephrolithiasis compared to the SP diet group. Despite the WP showed poorer acid-base profile, no significant morphological renal changes were observed. These results suggest that the use of SP instead of WP appears to promote a more alkaline plasma and urinary profile, with their consequent renal advantages.

        Latin America is experiencing one of the most critical moments in social history. Not implemented a plan of suitable and sufficient action, the consequences can be drastic detriment of the inhabitants of the region. Latin American youth remains static at such circumstances. You need to search the solution from within, following the ideals that reveal how to overcome such obstacles and inspire young people in this task. The thought of Fidel Castro is suitable for this purpose, so that from their opinion on youth will be sought to propose an action plan.

      • Robotics in Construction: State-of-Art of On-site Advanced Devices

        Recently, robotic technologies have significantly improved, bringing considerable enhancements in many sectors; the main objective of this paper is to figure out if these innovations have also involved the building industry. To achieve this purpose, it has been considered crucial to first reshape and clarify some concepts, incorporating a much more flexible understanding of the term "robot", as well as the formulation of its future potential. Subsequently, it has been carried out an analysis of the various advanced devices that are currently available to be employed in the construction processes; the review includes a thorough classification of construction robots, divided into 18 families reflecting their purpose of use, and a dissection based on the term used to define them. The attention has been focused on the most updated and recent robots and, in their absence, on the most advanced machines prevailing. This operation has been achieved taking into account the development history of construction robots, as well as the analyses and classifications previously conducted, reconsidering them according to the just mentioned reflections. Furthermore, an in-depth exploration of the exoskeletons, as well as on a sophisticated robot recently developed by Schindler Group has been executed.

      • ¿COMERCIO O POLÍTICA? LA ESTRATEGIA COMERCIAL ESTADOUNIDENSE Y LA INTEGRACIÓN ECONÓMICA REGIONAL LATINOAMERICANA

        Abstract. Since the debt crisis of 1982, Latin American programmes of regional economic integration suffered radical changes pari-pasu with the structural reforms and the dismantling of the import substitution model. The signature of NAFTA, between Canada, Mexico and the United States gave the green light to the negotiations of similar agreements, between the USA and several Latin American countries, but Argentina and Brazil, amongst others. These agreements constitute free trade areas complemented with commitments in other areas which have political character and accept the conditions of the USA “competitive liberalization” strategy. Today Latin American foreign trade relations pursue two distinct paths: deeper economic integration and political collaboration between them and diversified foreign markets, the route of headed by Brazil, Argentina and others in South America and, on the other side, the line of Mexico and Central American Countries, plus Colombia and Peru, of an ever increasing integration and political cooperation with the USA. This paper attempts to evaluate the effects of the two models and their impact on the Latin American external relations. Desde la crisis de la deuda de 1982, en consonancia con las reformas al modelo de sustitución de importaciones, la integración económica regional latinoamericana experimentó profundas reformas alejándose de los objetivos iniciales de crear mercados comunes y configurar mecanismos para acelerar el crecimiento de los países miembros menos desarrollados. La firma del TLCAN, entre México, Canadá y los Estados Unidos, puso a los países latinoamericanos en una especie de ruta expedita hacia firma de acuerdos de libre comercio, con este último, que constituyen zonas de libre comercio, adicionadas con acuerdos sobre temas de alcance político, en línea con la estrategia estadounidense conocida como “liberalización competitiva”. Paradójicamente las dos economías más grandes Brasil y Argentina no siguieron el ejemplo mexicano. Así, la región parece seguir dos rutas alternas de integración económica e inserción en el mercado internacional: de mayores vínculos económicos y políticos entre sí y mercados externos diversificados en el sur del continente, liderados por Argentina y Brasil, y, la otra, de ascendente integración y más estrecha cooperación política con los EUA, seguida por México, Centro América, Colombia y Perú. Este trabajo examina las características y alcances de uno y otro modelo.

      • Analytical and multicoupled methods for optimal steady-state thermoelectric solutions

        Peltier cells have low efficiency, but they are becoming attractive alternatives for affordable and environmentally clean cooling. In this line, the current article develops closed-form and semianalytical solutions to improve the temperature distribution of Bi<sub>2</sub>Te<sub>3</sub> thermoelements. From the distribution, the main objective of the current work-the optimal electric intensity to maximize cooling-is inferred. The general one-dimensional differential coupled equation is integrated for linear and quadratic geometry of thermoelements, under temperature constant properties. For a general shape, a piece-wise solution based on heat flux continuity among virtual layers gives accurate analytical solutions. For variable properties, another piece-wise solution is developed but solved iteratively. Taking advantage of the formulae, the optimal intensity is directly derived with a minimal computational cost; its value will be of utility for more advanced designs. Finally, a parametric study including straight, two linear, barrel, hourglass and vase geometries is presented, drawing conclusions on how the shape of the thermoelement affects the coupled phenomena. A specially developed coupled and non-linear finite element research code is run taking into account all the materials of the cell and using symmetries and repetitions. These accurate results are used to validate the analytical ones.
