Vol.20 No.5

This study was designed to analyze physique, body composition, blood pressure and risk factors of arteriosclerosis of 50 female students with normal BMI in D?S Women"s Universities, according to their body fat. As the result, the followings results were extracted. 1) physique and body composition, OG(Obesity Group) showed significantly higher WHR(Waist-Hip Ratio), % body fat & body fat mass than NG(Normal Group) at respectively, 5.6%, 34.0% and 43.7%(p<.001), but showed significantly lower lean mass(p<.01) 2) blood pressure, OG had higher SBP, MAP and DBP than NG at respectively, 3.9%, 4.8% and 5.6%, but there was no statistical difference between them. On the other hand, OG showed statistically higher Rb-aPWV and Lb-aPWV than NG at 6.4% and 7.0%(p<.01), when identifying risk factors of arteriosclerosis. 3) physique, body composition, blood pressure and risk factors of arteriosclerosis, then, there was a statistically significant, positive correlation with R. Lb-aPWV, as body fat percentage and body fat mass got higher(p<.05). However, they were in a negative correlation with lean mass(p<.05). These results demonstrate that high body fat has a cynical effect on blood pressure and risk factors of arteriosclerosis, even if female college students have normal BMI. Considering that female college students will perform important roles in taking care of health of their families as mothers in the future, it is extremely important to cut down on risks of their cardiovascular diseases. It is therefore, considered that a habitual exercise to reduce body fat is the most basic preventive activity to get rid of not only body fat, but also hazards of cardiovascular diseases.

Vol.28 No.4

This study aims to identify the correlation between walking and metabolic syndrome by analyzing the influence of walking every day on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome of Korean males. Data are based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013~2017). Subjects (n=1,459) were men (aged 18~64) who had no diseases (stroke, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, cancer, etc.) and did not do any strength training, or medium and high-intensity leisure. The subjects walked 4 hours or less each time. This research defined walking as walking for more than 10 minutes once a week for commuting, going to school, traveling, exercising, etc. A subject had to be positive to at least three of the five metabolic syndrome factors to be assessed as having metabolic syndrome. This research employed SAS 9.4 for data analysis, performed complex sample analysis, and the weights were based on the guidelines of the National Health and Nutrition Survey Raw Data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Also, the effects of total walking time on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome were identified with logistic regression analysis. As a result, the incidences of metabolic syndrome depending on the walking time were as follows: 25.9% for zero minutes, 24.9% for less than 150 min/wk, 22.5% for less than 300 min/wk, and 16.4% for more than 300 min/wk. To sum up, the amount of walking in daily life was closely related to the incidence of metabolic syndrome independent from extra exercise. Therefore, it is recommended to increase the walking time in daily life to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

The research analyzed data of male and female adults and seniors to identify how physical activities (non-smoking, non-drinking, normal body weight, adequate amount of sleep, breakfast, regular exercise) affect muscular strength based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and the result was as follows: First, seniors were more engaged in physical activities than their counterparts, where females showed higher figures than males. In particular, for adults, females were less smoking, drinking alcohol, and maintained normal body weight than males, while males were having more breakfasts and workouts regularly. For seniors, females showed fewer behaviors regarding smoking and drinking alcohol and had more breakfasts, while males showed higher figures for normal body weight, adequate sleep, and regular exercise. Second, for each health behavior’s relationship with grip strength, male adults with normal body weight and females adults with normal body weight, sufficient sleep, and regular exercise exhibited significantly high grip strength. In terms of seniors, both males and females with normal body weight and regular exercise showed significantly high grip strength than those who did not. Third, both males and females, regardless of age (adults and seniors) that engaged in the overall physical activities, showed significantly higher grip strength than their non-physically-active counterparts. As a result, adults and seniors of both genders showed high grip strength when having normal body weight and conducting regular exercise among health behaviors. Also, engaging in the overall health activities was also linked to high grip strength in all groups. Hence, it is considered that health behaviors on top of workouts can positively affect muscular strength. Also, further research on multiple ways to boost engagement in health activities is needed, with an identification of relevant factors of both genders. Furthermore, this research suggests identifying intermediary and regulatory factors such as the demographical characteristic and more in-depth stage-wise analysis of health behaviors.

Vol.25 No.2

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a 2 hour-tailored education program in Korean and other culture, hand washing, and pelvic floor muscle exercise program (pelvic exercise) for perinatal immigrant women and their Korean husbands. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated by changes in the levels of knowledge, skills and confidence in hand washing and pelvic exercise. A total of 20 immigrant women of childbearing age, who were married to Korean men, and their 20 husbands participated in the educational program between June and July, 2013. Self-administered questionnaires were used to evaluate any changes in the levels of cultural knowledge and confidence after education. The changes of the skills of hand washing and pelvic exercise were also evaluated using checklists developed based on educational contents. Paired t-tests were used for comparison. After education, levels of Korean cultural knowledge in immigrant women were significantly improved (p<.001) and in Korean husbands who were married to Chinese women (p=.018). In addition, skills and confidence both in hand washing and pelvic exercise were significantly improved in all participants (p<.001 or p=.001). Our study suggests that a tailored education program might improve health status in perinatal immigrant women and their husbands by increasing knowledge, skills, and confidence levels about general hygiene and exercise.

Vol.26 No.5

The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between physical activity (PA) and other health-related behaviors among Korean male adolescents. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2016 Online Survey of Youth Health Behavior in Korea. A total of 30,887 male adolescents aged 13-18 years in middle and high schools were included for the analysis. Various variables such as school, physical and parent characteristics, and various health-related behaviors (e.g., smoking, alcohol drinking, use of illegal substance, fruit or vegetable intake, etc.) were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t- or chi-square tests. In addition, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the associations between PA and the health behaviors while controlling for the potential confounders. The PA (either aerobic or vigorous PA) participant rates among the s tudy participants were 51.2%. The multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that lower school grades (the 7th – 11th grades) compared to the 12th grade, higher household income, experiences of alcohol or soft drink drinking, trial of weight loss, and more fruit or vegetable intake were significantly associated with increased PA participation while obesity, skipping breakfast intake, and sitting longer than 4 hours/day for watching TV, longer use of internet, and others were associated with decreased PA participation. Our study findings implicate the need for the development of grade-specific interventions to increase PA participation among Korean male adolescents.

Vol.28 No.3

The purpose of this study is to provide primary data for promoting healthier lives in older adults. To this end, this study analyzed the correlation between grip strength and the health-related quality of life(HRQoL; EQ-5D) in the elderly. The participants of this research were 4,917(2,264 male and 2,653 female) who underwent a grip strength test and responded to a questionnaire for those older than 65. The data collected from the participants were analyzed with SPSS 25.0 statistical software. Specifically, descriptive statistics were measured for mean, standard deviation, frequency and ratio, and as for analysis, the general linear modeling method and chi-square test were conducted. according to the result, there was a positive correlation between grip strength and the quality of life measures. On top of that, three linear models were generated to investigate which HRQoL measures were more likely to be affected by the difference in grip strength. The factors that influence the HRQoL(e.g., age, body mass index(BMI), education, household income, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, residential area, marital status, hypertension, diabetes and cancer) were considered in the modeling. The result of the general linear modeling showed that in both sexes, the quality of life was higher in those with stronger grip strength. In conclusion, these results can indicate that the loss of grip strength among the Korean elderly of 65 or older can be related to the deteriorating HRQoL. This study suggests, based on this conclusion, the need for an exercise intervention that strengthens the muscle in promoting the HRQoL indicators among the elderly.
