Operating combustors under high pressure and high temperature condition is essential for practical applications to achieve the highest possible power, thrust, and/or thermal efficiency. Accordingly, it is important to quantitatively measure and intensively investigate the combustion dynamics and stability in the relevant high pressure combustion environments. Therefore, a newly designed combustion chamber for high-pressure combustion research that accommodates partially premixed and swirl stabilized turbulent flames with wide optical-access windows is under construction at SNU. This lab-scale gas turbine combustor can burn fuels at up to 50 bar and 800 K at the intake being capable of reproducing operation conditions of current and next-generation high-pressure gas turbine combustors. Main combustion air flow rate is set to 176 L/min (approximately 171 g/s at 50 bar) that is approximately 22% of the total air flow rate (768 g/s at 50 bar), and the bypass air (67% of the total air flow) cools the liner and dilutes the high temperature combustion products. Detail designs and functions of the individual components are briefly introduced in this paper.

The simultaneous laser ignition and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) on a spray flame have been conducted for developing a feedback control system. In parallel with the laser ignition, the equivalence ration and droplet characteristics such as concentration, size, and distribution of spray combustion are simultaneously obtained. The present results suggest a feedback controller of spray combustion that uses a single laser source for both optical ignition and subsequent breakdown for spectroscopy of two-phase spray.
