This study reviews the usage of heir apparent(Chŏngyun ; 正胤) and crown prince(T"aeja ; 太子). First, it uses chinese historical records and monuments to analyze the usage of heir apparent. The findings indicate that the word meant legitimate son(嫡子) or authenticity(正統) during the reign of King T"aejo. When King T"aejo appointed Wang Mu(王武) as heir apparent, his goal must have been to establish the son’s legitimacy. When King Kwangjong appointed Wang Chu(王伷), his eldest legitimate son, as heir apparent, the original meaning of the word was retained. However, in his testamentary edicts, King Kyŏngjong’s referred to his son Wang Ch"i(王治) as heir apparent, which suggests that the word lost its relevance to the main line of descent and merely meant an heir to the throne. By the time of King Hyŏnjong’s reign, heir apparent was no longer used. According to the records, in the early Koryŏ period, there were 16 crown princes other than heir apparent. However, these crown princes did not have a claim to the throne. As such, in previous literature, the term was interpreted to mean prince in general. However, all of the 16 crown princes were conferred the honors posthumously, presumably between the reign of King Kyŏngjong and the reign of King Hyŏnjong. In order to stabilize the political situation at the time, King Kyŏngjong released prisoners who had been wrongfully accused and incarcerated under the reign of King Kwangjong. As part of the efforts, he posthumously appointed some members of the royal family as crown prince. King Sŏngjong also granted the title to royal family members who were persecuted under the reign of King Kyŏngjong and others who were closely related to his relatives on his mother’s side. Lastly, King Hyŏnjong granted the crown prince title to strengthen the king’s power that had been undermined by the Rebellion of Kang Cho(康兆) and the Khitan invasion. To summarize, crown prince in the early Koryŏ period imply the turbulent political reality at the time. The early kings of Koryŏ conferred the title of crown prince to stabilize their kingdom and strengthen their claim to the throne.
