This study explores the effect of a humanities-based convergent class model (HBCCM) on critical thinking (CT) when Kakao-Talk is utilized as a virtual learning space to acquire new knowledge using flipped learning (FL). Its objective is to promote EFL undergraduates’ (n=51) participation in face-to-face discussion activities by getting them to prepare before coming to class. The preliminary learning contents and conceptual knowledge organized into specific argumentative topics based on Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Foucault’s philosophical perspective of Sexuality, Madness and Power were provided via Kakao-Talk. Students could experience a self-regulatory learning process outside of class and develop their ideas with peers' through in-class discussion. While the collaborative learning through group activities promoted social interaction, interdependence and critical analysis, the students self-evaluated their ideas clearly. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies including Watson-Glaser's (W-G) CT assessment were conducted to evaluate the change of CT skills. The results showed the significant interaction of the CT skills. In particular, the students improved the skills of recognizing assumption, deductive reasoning and evaluating arguments as they experienced CT-efficacy through this learning process. Accordingly, HBCCM may contribute to the higher education for activating CT and the improvement of a teaching and learning method.

As a smart-phone game can be utilized as a learning tool in order to accumulate language information outside the classroom, this case study explored a game combined learning environment to promote EFL undergraduates’ self-regulated learning (SRL) behaviors such as self-monitoring or self-study by drawing interests about the target language into a virtual space. In particular, its objective was to analyze the effect of lexical-chunk game-based learning (LCGBL) using a digital game Catch It-English on the EFL learners’ self-regulation and language performance. While the EFL learners (n = 37) regularly participated in game-play with peers, they could experience collaborative learning through the exchange of question-cards asking about the arrangement of lexical chunks for sentence formulation and self-review their outcomes. Then, in class, they were encouraged to build upon their spoken and written outputs using the instructor’s multi-word scaffolding resources. With quantitative and qualitative analyses, the results through multiple-regression analysis revealed that learners’ efficacy and motivation were the key components for activating SRL among psychological aspects through LCGBL. Above all, this learning model may be an empirical prototype to improve language proficiency by integrating the advantages of lexical-chunks into off-class game activities and in-class learning.

The potential energy of Ni₄,Ni_(6) and Ni_(13), Cluster is calculated by Extended Hu¨ckel Theory. The potential curve of Ni₄, cluster is distorted due to the symmetry of cluster model. The equillibrium distance and binding energy are good agreement with the experimentals. Also, the interaction energy of oxygen atom with these clusters are obtained. These energy curves are not smooth and effected by symmetry property.
