The fibronectin is a normal plasma and extracellular matrix glycoprotein that is involved in each phase of wound healing. For example, it is incorporated into removal by the reticuloendothelial system ; It opsonizes circulating tissue debris for fibroblast, and epithelial cells to move into the wound. In order to evaluate the effect of topical application of homologous fibronectin and occlusive dressings on healing of a skin wound, we purified fibronection from rabbit plasma, and made four excisional full-thickness wounds on the skin of the back of each rabbit. In the first group, the fibronectin containing ointment was applied and a gauze dressing was applied. In the second group, the fibronectin containing ointment was applied with occlusive dressing(Guoderm). In the third group, only ointment base was applied with a gauze dressing. In the fourth group, only ointment base was applied with occlusive dressing(Duoderm). Excised lesions treated with the fibronectin containing ointment healed more rapidly than the paired control lesions treated with the ointment base alone, and the difference was siginificant in the early phase of wound healing within 1wk, at the finding of the wound size. In histologic findings. we could also see abundant fibroblast and more active neovascularization in groups treated with fibronectin containing ointment. On the other hand, the groups treated with Duoderm dressing did not show significant differences in the rate of wound healing compaired with groups treated with gauze dressing. However we could see a little increased fibrblast and granulation tissue with active neovascularization.

The free curve gear is a non-circular gear without any rotating center, which can perform free curve motion for complicated mechanisms, and minimize the work area. In this study, an algorithm for tooth profile generation of free curve involute gear is developed. The algorithm uses the involute gear creating principle in which a gear can be generated by rolling with another standard involute one. Cycloid curve and third polynomial curve gears were designed and verified by computer graphics. These gears are manufactured in the Wire-cut EDM and examined in engagement with a standard spur gear. The results showed that the proposed algorithm is successful to design and to manufacture the free curve gear with concave and convex profiles.

High-voltage electrical injuries of the scalp frequently have difficult problems in wound management. The incidence of electrical injury has recently increased and a full understanding of the injury mechanism is basis to the intelligible care of patient's wound. Authors experienced 8 cases of electrical injuries of the scalp from March 1993 to september 1995. 3 of 8 cases were treated with free flaps : Free latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap, free latissimus dorsi muscle and serratus anterior osteomyocutaneous flap and free latissimus dorsi muscle flap. Another 3 cases were treated with direct tissue expansion and the remaining 2 cases used secondary tissue expansion after skin graft of the burn wound. The results were as follows 1) The advantages of free flap include one stage operation, short wound healing period and early operation after injury but the disadvantages of free flap include donor site scar deformity, long operative time and technical difficulty. 2) The advantages of tissue expansion method include good cosmetic result, no donor site scar and easy operative procedure but the disadvantages of the procedure include long period of tissue expansion, more expensiveness and infection of the exposed calvarium during scalp expansion.

Wood powder is widely used in paperboard mills to increase bulk and reduce drying-energy consumption, but this material also deteriorates paper strength because it interferes with the bonds between fibers. Although there have been many studies done to improve the strength of paperboard containing wood powder, specific applications have not recently been observed in paperboard mills. In this study, we carried out a new approach for improving paperboard strength by developing a new organic filler with the ability to increase the bonds between fibers. The residue of tapioca starch was used as raw material to manufacture an organic filler. The functionalities, including bulk and strength, were evaluated by making handsheets containing either wood powder or tapioca organic filler, or a mixture of the two, and measuring their physical properties. The organic filler showed lower bulk improvement and higher paperboard strength than the wood powder. The mixture of tapioca organic filler and wood powder showed improved paperboard strength compared to wood powder alone. Therefore, tapioca residue can be used as a raw material to manufacture an organic filler for paperboard mills.
