상설공연장의 역할과 미래전망 - 워커힐극장을 중심으로 -

This study is to identify main factor of the failure as to what was the problem by analyzing the cause that has led to dissolution of theatres, targeting Walkerhill theatre, and also analyzing successful factor of future permanent theatres. The method of study is based on ‘Walkerhill, history of 30 years’, various internet articles and researcher’s personal experience of having worked as a performer at a theatre, and this paper can be basic research data of Walkerhill theatre since there has not been any former research on that subject. Examining the factors that caused the dissolution of theatres, such factors include slowdown in sales, lack of marketing strategy to attract foreigners, expensive price of tickets compared to other performances of different genres, and unclear targeting of audience. In addition, due to lack of tourist facilities, utilization rate decreased which had negative effect on management of theatres. The result of study for vitalization of permanent theatres that has been concluded by the factors of failure of Walkerhill theatre is as in the following. First, it should produce pieces of art with degree of completion using themes and subjects that audience can easily approach to by creating performances of various genres. Second, it should focus more on attracting tourists by making representative performances in every sightseeing city so that watching a show can be part of a tourist route. Third, the number of theatres should be increased so that more people who wish to work in the field have opportunity to do so. Therefore, permanent theatres should be developed into great tourist facilities that lure our cultural tourists and should have positive effects on children education by informing our traditional performances. 본 연구는 한국의 문화관광을 대표할 수 있는 워커힐 극장이 해체될 수밖에 없었던 요인들을 집중 분석하여 ‘무엇이 문제인가’와 실패 요인을 살펴보고 앞으로 상설공연장의 성공적 요인을 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 연구방법은 ‘워커힐 三十年史’와 각종 인터넷 기사 자료, 연구자가 워커힐 극장에서 무용수로 활동했던 경험을 토대로 하였다. 이 연구는 지금까지 워커힐 극장에 대한 선행연구가 없었다는 점에서 앞으로 추진될 여러 상설공연 활성화를 위한 기초 연구 자료로 쓰이는데 있다고 본다. 워커힐 극장이 해체하게 된 요인을 살펴보면 극장의 매출 부진과 외국 관광객들을 유치해야 하는 마케팅 전략 부족, 타 장르 공연보다 워커힐 극장 공연 티켓 가격이 비싸다는 점과 공연의 주요 관람객 층의 타켓이 불분명하였다. 또한 호텔의 주변 관광 시설 부족으로 인하여 호텔 관광객들의 이용률이 감소하면서 극장 운영에도 영향을 미쳤다. 이러한 워커힐 극장의 해체요인을 분석하여 앞으로 상설공연장의 활성화를 위한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다양한 장르의 공연으로 대중적인 브랜드 작품을 만들어 관객들에게 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 주제와 소재의 작품을 완성도 있게 제작하는 것이다. 둘째, 관광객 유치를 확대시켜 각 주요 관광 도시에 대표 공연을 만들어 관광객들을 주요 관광코스로 연계시켜 공연을 관람할 수 있도록 한다. 셋째, 공연장 수의 증가로 일자리를 늘려 현장에서 일을 하길 원하는 사람들의 일자리 창출이 이루어질 수 있도록 하는 것이다. 이로써 상설공연장이 앞으로의 우리나라 문화 관광객을 유치시키는 커다란 문화관광상품화로 발전시키고, 전통문화 활성화에 기여하고자 한다.
