. Existing activated sludge processes have disadvantages such as relatively low nutrient removal and difficulties in controlling the food-to-microorganism ratio. Conversely, granule sludge sequencing batch reactors (GS-SBR) are emerging as an alternative to activated sludge processes due to their small footprint, low energy consumption, and reduced excess sludge production. This study analyzes the kinetic mechanism involved in the formation of aerobic granular sludge with substrate reduction. Over a 30-day operating period, the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), volatile SS (VSS), mixed liquor suspended solids, and sludge volume index ranged from 6.25–6.65 mg/L, 5.41–5.85 mg/L, 1500–3960 mg/L, and 80–101 mL/g, respectively. The seeding sludge, sourced from the aeration tank in municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs), had a mean floc size of 0.1–0.2 mm. After at least seventy days of inoculation from floc sludge, granules appeared in the reactor, starting at approximately 0.6 mm in size with a visually compact structure. The average sludge synthetic value was 0.50 mgVSS/mgCOD, emphasizing the need for high safety factors in the design of GS-SBRs based on the kinetic mechanism of microorganisms.
