COVID-19가 고등교육체제에 초래한 변화와 가능성 탐색 : 대학 현장 보직교수들의 인식을 중심으로

본 연구는 COVID-19로 인한 급격한 사회 환경 변화 속에서 국내 대학들이 경험하고 있는 변화와 어려움들을 심층적으로 살펴보고, 이러한 이해를 토대로 대학들이 포스트 코로나 시대를 맞아 준비해야 할 교육혁신을 위한 새로운 가능성과 이에 따른 과제들을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 전국 4년제 대학의 보직교수들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시한 후, 대학의 유형과 맥락에 따라 나타나는 상황을 보다 심층적으로 파악하기 위해 추가적으로 면담을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, COVID-19로 인해 대학 구성원들이 급속히 확대된 온라인 교육의 실체와 가능성에 대해 새롭게 인식한 것이 가장 의미있는 변화로 나타났으며 이는 곧 대학 시설·설비, 기술, 그리고 오프라인 대학의 의미에 대한 성찰의 필요성을 제기해 주었다. 한편 COVID-19로 인한 대면접촉의 최소화는 그 동안 산업 현장 및 학생들과의 접촉면을 넓힘으로써 교육 혁신을 추진해 온 지방 후발 중소규모 대학들에 가장 큰 타격을 주고 있는 것으로 나타났다. COVID-19로 촉발된 변화를 교육혁신을 위한 새로운 가능성으로 바꾸기 위해서는 무엇보다 교수들의 학부교육의 중요성을 보는 태도와 가치관 변화가 가장 중요한 것임을 다시금 확인하였다. 아울러 지방 후발 중소규모 대학의 위기를 극복하기 위한 보다 정교한 대책 마련과 오프라인 시대에 만들어진 법령과 제도의 전면적 재검토, 양질의 콘텐츠를 효과적으로 연계·활용할 수 있는 ‘공유 교육과정의 도입’, 그리고 온라인 교육의 질 관리 등에 대한 정부의 역할이 필요하다는 점을 제언하였다. This study analyzes the changes and difficulties experienced by South Korean universities due to rapid social changes generated by COVID-19, and based on this understanding, proposes new opportunities and implications for educational innovation in a post COVID-19 era. Survey data was collected from 4-year university deans and directors across the country, and was then followed by in-depth interviews to understand current situations more thoroughly in regards to university type and context. The ensuing results revealed that the most meaningful change brought about by COVID-19 was that members of Korean universities, in particular faculty members, perceived the true nature and potential embedded in online education; hence, raising the question that there was a need to reflect upon the meaning of university facilities, equipments, technology and the offline university concept. On the other hand, reduced face-to-face contact due to COVID -19 hit small and medium-sized universities in local regions the hardest, which had long striven to initiate educational innovation by increasing face to face contact with students and industries. Furthermore, in order to turn the changes caused by COVID-19 into new opportunities; the change in attitude and perception towards undergraduate education by faculty members, once again proved to be most important. Therefore, this study calls for the provision of more detailed measures to help alleviate the difficulties of small and medium-sized universities in local regions, the overall re-examination of regulations and systems put in place during the offline education era, the implementation of a ‘Shared Curriculum’ that enables high-quality educational contents to be transfered and utilized effectively, and finally, highlights the role of government in areas such as online education quality assurance.
