Panoramic radiographs underestimate extensions of the anterior loop and mandibular incisive canal

de Brito, Ana Caroline Ramos,Nejaim, Yuri,de Freitas, Deborah Queiroz,Santos, Christiano de Oliveira Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2016 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.46 No.3

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to detect the anterior loop of the mental nerve and the mandibular incisive canal in panoramic radiographs (PAN) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, as well as to determine the anterior/mesial extension of these structures in panoramic and cross-sectional reconstructions using PAN and CBCT images. Materials and Methods: Images (both PAN and CBCT) from 90 patients were evaluated by 2 independent observers. Detection of the anterior loop and the incisive canal were compared between PAN and CBCT. The anterior/mesial extension of these structures was compared between PAN and both cross-sectional and panoramic CBCT reconstructions. Results: In CBCT, the anterior loop and the incisive canal were observed in 7.7% and 24.4% of the hemimandibles, respectively. In PAN, the anterior loop and the incisive canal were detected in 15% and 5.5% of cases, respectively. PAN presented more difficulties in the visualization of structures. The anterior/mesial extensions ranged from 0.0 mm to 19.0 mm on CBCT. PAN underestimated the measurements by approximately 2.0 mm. Conclusion: CBCT appears to be a more reliable imaging modality than PAN for preoperative workups of the anterior mandible. Individual variations in the anterior/mesial extensions of the anterior loop of the mental nerve and the mandibular incisive canal mean that is not prudent to rely on a general safe zone for implant placement or bone surgery in the interforaminal region.

Incidence and risk factors for the development of cerebral metastasis in cervical cancer patients

Juliana de Brito Rangel,Alessandra Grasso Giglio,Cristiane Lemos Cardozo,Anke Bergmann,Luiz Claudio Santos Thuler 대한부인종양학회 2022 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.33 No.5

Objective: Cerebral metastasis (CM) in cervical cancer (CC) cases, although rare, results in high lethality rates. The present study aimed to assess CM incidence in a Brazilian reference CC center and evaluate the risk factors for CM development. Retrospective observational study of patients diagnosed with CC between 2010 and 2017. Methods: Cumulative CM incidence and incidence density were evaluated. Characteristics associated to CM development risks were identified using crude (cOR) or adjusted (aOR) odds ratios. Results: A total of 3,397 patients were included in this study. Patient age ranged from 18 to 101 years, with a mean age of 48.8±14.0. After a mean follow-up time of 3.2±2.1 years, 51 CM cases were identified, resulting in a cumulative incidence of 1.5% (95% confidence intervals [CI]=1.12–1.97) and an incidence density at the end of the 6th year of 27.4 per 1,000 women/ year. Advanced clinical stage (aOR=3.15; 95% CI=1.16–8.58; p=0.025), the presence of previous lung metastasis (aOR=4.04; 95% CI=1.82–8.94; p=0.001) and the adenocarcinoma (aOR=2.90; 95% CI=1.46–5.76; p=0.002), adenosquamous carcinoma (aOR=7.33; 95%CI=2.87–18.73; p<0.001), undifferentiated carcinoma (aOR=14.37; 95% CI=3.77–54.76;p<0.001) and neuroendocrine carcinoma (aOR=21.31; 95% CI=6.65–68.37, p<0.001) histological types were associated with a higher risk for CM development. CM risk was higher in the first years of follow-up, with no cases observed after the 6th year. Conclusion: CC patients in advanced clinical stages, displaying previous lung metastasis and non-squamous histological types are at high risk of developing CM.

Trametes villosa Lignin Peroxidase (TvLiP): Genetic and Molecular Characterization

( Rita Terezinha De Oliveira Carneiro ),( Maiza Alves Lopes ),( Marilia Lordelo Cardoso Silva ),( Veronica Da Silva Santos ),( Volnei Brito De Souza ),( Aurizangela Oliveira De Sousa ),( Carlos Primin 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2017 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.27 No.1

White-rot basidiomycetes are the organisms that decompose lignin most efficiently, and Trametes villosa is a promising species for ligninolytic enzyme production. There are several publications on T. villosa applications for lignin degradation regarding the expression and secretion of laccase and manganese peroxidase (MnP) but no reports on the identification and characterization of lignin peroxidase (LiP), a relevant enzyme for the efficient breakdown of lignin. The object of this study was to identify and partially characterize, for the first time, gDNA, mRNA, and the corresponding lignin peroxidase (TvLiP) protein from T. villosa strain CCMB561 from the Brazilian semiarid region. The presence of ligninolytic enzymes produced by this strain grown in inducer media was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed by spectrophotometry, qPCR, and dye fading using Remazol Brilliant Blue R. The spectrophotometric analysis showed that LiP activity was higher than that of MnP. The greatest LiP expression as measured by qPCR occurred on the 7th day, and the ABSA medium (agar, sugarcane bagasse, and ammonium sulfate) was the best that favored LiP expression. The amplification of the TvLiP gene median region covering approximately 50% of the T. versicolor LPGIV gene (87% identity); the presence of Trp199, Leu115, Asp193, Trp199, and Ala203 in the translated amplicon of the T. villosa mRNA; and the close phylogenetic relationship between TvLiP and T. versicolor LiP all indicate that the target enzyme is a lignin peroxidase. Therefore, T. villosa CCMB561 has great potential for use as a LiP, MnP, and Lac producer for industrial applications.

Pectin and SDS as auxiliary flocculants for complementary treatment of textile wastewater by electrocoagulation

Mauro Cosme de Carvalho Góes,Marcos Paulo Ribeiro Garcez,Andréa Roberta Ferreira Siqueira,Thiago Palhares Farias,Claudemir Gomes de Santana,Jonas de Jesus Gomes da Costa Neto,Cicero Wellington Brito B 한국화학공학회 2021 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.38 No.8

Textile wastewaters currently remain as one of the major sources of environmental pollution. In addition to the presence of several recalcitrant species, the volume of the effluent to be treated is usually quite high, due to the excessive consumption of water in this kind of processing. To avoid all the negative impacts associated with the discharge of these untreated effluents, effective remediation techniques should be applied. Although there are currently several methods available, due to complexity and volume of the wastewater, combined technologies can provide better efficiency, lower cost and less time consumption. In this work, electrocoagulation (EC) combined with the conventional flocculation process was studied for the removal of methylene blue dye (MB) in aqueous medium. Under specific EC conditions (4 pairs of electrodes, 2.5 cm spacing, electrolysis time of 203min, pHinitial 4, 32 V, 1.5 A) it was possible to remove 63% of the dye. Combining EC with conventional flocculation, a notable reduction in electrolysisrequired time (203 to 60 min), dye (99.8%), color (100%) and turbidity (99.2%) was observed.

Monetary Integration in East Asia: An Empirical Approach

( Jose Brandao De Brito ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2004 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.19 No.3

This paper investigates empirically the economic feasibility of monetary integration in East Asia. A structural VAR model is employed to decompose real output, real exchange rate and price level into a lagged polynomial of supply, demand and monetary shocks. The shocks are identified through the imposition of long-run restrictions, which are extracted from a version of Clarida and Gali`s (1994) model extended in this paper to encompass the Balassa-Samuelson-effect. Once identified, the shocks are used to construct indicators relevant to monetary integration. Using the Euro-11 countries as benchmark, the overall results suggest that East Asian countries fulfil reasonably well the criteria looked at.

Sulphonamide and Sulphonyl-hydrazone Cyclic Imide Derivatives: Antinociceptive Activity, Molecular Modeling and In Silico ADMET Screening

        Kely N. de Oliveira,Helena C. Castro,Márcia M. Souza,Plínio Cunha Sathler,Uiaran O. Magalhães,Carlos R. Rodrigues,Patrícia R. Palm,Maicon Sarda,Pablo E. Perotto,Sabrina Cezar,Monique A. de Brito,Arian 대한약학회 2012 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.35 No.10

In this paper, we describe the antinociceptive activity, molecular modeling and in silico ADMET screening of a series of sulphonyl-hydrazone and sulphonamide imidobenzene derivatives. Among these compounds, the sulphonyl-hydrazones 9 and 11 showed the most potent analgesic activity (ID50 = 5.1 and 6.8 μmol/kg, respectively). Interestingly, all derivatives evaluated in this study have a better analgesic profile than the control drugs, acetyl salicylic acid and acetaminophen. Derivative 9 was the most promising compound; with a level of activity that was 24 times higher than the control drugs. Our SAR study showed a relationship among the distribution of the frontier orbital HOMO coefficients, HOMO-LUMO energy gap of these molecules and their reactivity. The best analgesic compounds (including 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12) fulfilled the Lipinski “rule-of-five”, which is theoretically important for good drug absorption and permeation.

Anti-Ulcerogenic Mechanisms of the Sesquiterpene Lactone Onopordopicrin-Enriched Fraction from Arctium lappa L. (Asteraceae): Role of Somatostatin, Gastrin, and Endogenous Sulfhydryls and Nitric Oxide

        Ana Beatriz Albino de Almeida,Anderson Luiz-Ferreira,Maı´ra Cola,Luciana Di Pietro Magri,Leonia Maria Batista,Joseilson Alves de Paiva,Jose´ Roberto Trigo,Alba R.M. Souza-Brito 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.4

Arctium lappa L. has been used in folk medicine as a diuretic, depurative, and digestive stimulant and in dermatological conditions. The mechanisms involved in the anti-ulcerogenic activity of the sesquiterpene onopordopicrin (ONP)-enriched fraction (termed the ONP fraction), obtained from A. lappa leaves, were studied. The gastroprotective mechanism of the ONP fraction was evaluated in experimental in vivo models in rodents, mimicking this disease in humans. ONP fraction (50mg/kg, p.o.) significantly inhibited the mucosal injury induced by ethanol/HCl solution (75%), indomethacin/bethanecol (68.9%), and stress (58.3%). When the ONP fraction was investigated in pylorus ligature, it did not induce alteration in the gastric volume but did modify the pH and total acid concentration of gastric juice. ONP fraction significantly increased serum somatostatin levels (82.1 – 4.1 vs. control group 12.7 – 4 pmol/L) and decreased serum gastrin levels (62.6 – 6.04 vs. control group 361.5 – 8.2 lU/mL). Mucus production was not significantly altered by the ONP fraction. Gastroprotection by the ONP fraction was completely inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide treatment and did not modify the effect in the animals pretreated with l-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester. These results suggest an antisecretory mechanism involved with the antiulcerogenic effect of the ONP fraction. However, only endogenous sulfhydryls play an important role in gastroprotection of the ONP fraction.

Push-out bond strength and marginal adaptation of apical plugs with bioactive endodontic cements in simulated immature teeth

de Sá Maria Aparecida Barbosa,Nunes Eduardo,Antunes Alberto Nogueira da Gama,Brito Júnior Manoel,Horta Martinho Campolina Rebello,Amaral Rodrigo Rodrigues,Cohen Stephen,Silveira Frank Ferreira 대한치과보존학회 2021 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.46 No.4

Objectives This study evaluates the bond strength and marginal adaptation of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) Repair HP and Biodentine used as apical plugs; MTA was used as reference material for comparison. Materials and Methods A total of 30 single-rooted teeth with standardized, artificially created open apices were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 10 per group), according to the material used to form 6-mm-thick apical plugs: group 1 (MTA Repair HP); group 2 (Biodentine); and group 3 (white MTA). Subsequently, the specimens were transversely sectioned to obtain 2 (cervical and apical) 2.5-mm-thick slices per root. Epoxy resin replicas were observed under a scanning electron microscope to measure the gap size at the material/dentin interface (the largest and smaller gaps were recorded for each replica). The bond strength of the investigated materials to dentin was determined using the push-out test. The variable bond strengths and gap sizes were evaluated independently at the apical and cervical root dentin slices. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytic statistics. Results The comparison between the groups regarding the variables' bond strengths and gap sizes showed no statistical difference (p > 0.05) except for a single difference in the smallest gap at the cervical root dentin slice, which was higher in group 3 than in group 1 (p < 0.05). Conclusions The bond strength and marginal adaptation to root canal walls of MTA HP and Biodentine cement were comparable to white MTA.
