        Clinical Implication of Dacryoendoscopy in the Patients with Tearing: A Systematic Review

        Purpose: A systematic review of the literature on diagnostic and therapeutic indications, techniques, and complications of dacryoendoscopy (DE) was performed. Methods: The authors performed a PubMed search of articles published in English on DE. Data were collected and classified according to the categories of the disease. The clinical outcomes and limitations were particularly analyzed. Results: The lacrimal drainage system from the canaliculus to the inferior meatus could be examined based on the specific anatomical features by DE. The canalicular mucosa is smooth and brightly colored, the lacrimal sac shows covering mucosa with good vascularization and the nasolacrimal duct is lined with bright tubular mucosal folds. DE allows direct visualization of the detailed internal condition of the lacrimal disorders, to directly diagnose the site of obstruction with accuracy and address the causes and recanalize the lacrimal drainage system using assisted micro lacrimal surgical instruments in the tearing patients. Conclusions: Better visualization of the lacrimal canal with DE improves the understanding of physiology and precise identification of the obstructing lesions, both of which are the key to a comprehensive management for the tearing patients.

        Dacryoendoscopic Findings of Patients with Lacrimal Drainage Obstruction Associated with Cancer Treatment

        Purpose: To compare the diagnosis and treatment outcome of lacrimal drainage obstruction of patients who underwent systemic chemotherapy (CTx) or radioactive iodine treatment (RAI) by using dacryoendoscopy and at the same time performing dacryoendoscopy-guided silicone tube insertion (STI) to treat epiphora. Methods: From July 2017 to December 2020, the medical records of 11 patients (16 eyes) were diagnosed with lacrimal drainage obstruction after CTx or RAI and underwent dacryoendoscopy-guided STI were reviewed retrospectively. We tried to count the number of obstructive sites in total patients using slit-lamp examination and dacryoendoscopic findings. Results: A total of 11 patients, 16 eyes, were enrolled in this study. The onset of epiphora in the CTx group (3.0 ± 4.0 months) was significantly shorter than that in the RAI group (52.6 ± 36.5 months, p = 0.001). There were total 32 obstructive sites including 28 obstructive sites of dacryoendoscopic findings and four sites of punctual stenosis in total 16 cases. Using dacryoendoscopy, granulation findings was dominant in RAI patients (p = 0.038) and mucus finding was frequent mostly in lacrimal sac and canaliculus. In the CTx group, mucosal edema finding was dominant (p = 0.038) and fibrotic membrane finding was frequent in all levels of lacrimal drainage system. Regarding the obstructive location, lacrimal sac was the most frequently obstructed site in the two groups (p = 0.038). Conclusions: The onset of epiphora in the CTx group was significantly earlier than in the RAI group. In the CTx group, mucosal edema finding was frequent in all levels of lacrimal drainage system. In the RAI group, granulation finding was frequent mostly in lacrimal sac and canaliculus. Since the clinical outcome was satisfactory, intervention with dacryoendoscopy-guided STI could be a treatment of choice in patients with epiphora after CTx or RAI.

      • Combination of <i>Sasa quelpaertensis</i> Nakai Leaf Extract and Cisplatin Suppresses the Cancer Stemness and Invasion of Human Lung Cancer Cells

        <P>Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and most chemotherapeutic drugs have limited success in treating this disease. Furthermore, some drugs show undesirable side effects due to the enrichment of cancer stem cells (CSCs) that are present, leading to resistance to conventional chemotherapy and tumor relapse. CSCs possess self-renewal characteristics, aggressive tumor initiating activity, and ability to facilitate tumor metastasis. Therefore, development of nontoxic agents that can potentiate chemotherapy and eliminate CSCs would be highly desirable. In the present study, we investigated whether <I>Sasa quelpaertensis</I> leaf extracts (SQE) and cisplatin (CIS), individually or in combination, would exert anti-CSC and antimetastatic effect in H1299 and A549 human lung cancer cells. Following these treatments, cell growth, phosphorylation of phosphoinositide-3 kinase, and activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin were inhibited. Decreased serial sphere formation, clonogenicity, and expression of major stem cell markers, such as CD44 and SOX-2, in CD44<SUP>+</SUP> cancer stem cells were also observed. In addition, inhibition of cell migration and invasion in both cell lines as well as inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase-2 activity and expression were detected. Importantly, the anticancer stemness and antimetastasis effects in each of these assays were greater for the combined treatment with SQE and CIS than with each treatment individually. In conclusion, the data suggest that SQE alone, or in combination with CIS, represents a promising therapeutic strategy for eliminating cancer stemness and cell invasion potential of CSCs, thereby treating and preventing metastatic lung cancer cells.</P>

        전측두엽 치매 3례

        전측두엽 치매는 치매의 흔한 원인이며 알쯔하이머병과 구별되는 질환이다. 하지만 임상증상에서 인지기능의 현저한 장애가 나타나기 전에 사회적 기능과 인격의 붕괴가 서서히 일어나기 때문에 다른 정신과 질환으로 진단될 수도 있다. 저자들은 3례 전측두엽 치매를 보고하였다. 이 증례들은 전측두엽 치매를 임상 진단으로 고려할 만한 병력과 증상을 가지고 있고, 신경심리학 검사, 대뇌의 자기공명영상과 18F-FDG양성자방출단층촬영술 등의 검사에서 전형적인 전측두엽 치매의 소견을 보였다. 이러한 병력과 임상양상 그리고 객관적인 소견들은 임상에서 전측두엽 치매에 주의를 기울이고 적절하게 진단하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 생각된다. Frontotemporal dementia is a common cause of dementia and distinguished from Alzheimer`s disease. Because its clinical symptoms are characterized by slow progressive social breakdown and change of personality before cognitive impairments become prominent, it may be diagosed as other psychiatric disease. We have presented three cases of frontotemporal dementia. They had typical clinical histories and symptoms which deserve to be considered frontotemporal dementia. They showed appropriate findings of frontotemporal dementia in the neuropsychological tests and brain imaging study with brain magnetic resonance imaging and 18F-FDGpositron emission tomography. Their clinical histories and findings are thought to be helpful for clinician to give attention to and diagnose frontotemporal dementia.

      • Tunable Emission of Bluish Zn-Cu-Ga-S Quantum Dots by Mn Doping and Their Electroluminescence

        <P>On the basis of bluish-emitting double-shelled quantum dots (QDs) of Zn-Cu-Ga-S (ZCGS)/ZnS/ZnS, Mn doping into ZCGS host with different Mn/Cu concentrations is implemented via surface adsorption and lattice diffusion. The resulting double-shelled Mn-doped ZCGS (ZCGS/Mn) QDs exhibit a distinct Mn<SUP>2+ 4</SUP>T<SUB>1</SUB>-<SUP>6</SUP>A<SUB>1</SUB> emission as a consequence of effective lattice incorporation simultaneously with host intragap states-involving emissions of free-to-bound and donor-acceptor pair recombinations. The relative contribution of Mn emission to the overall photoluminescence (PL) is consistently proportional to its concentration, resulting in tunable PL from bluish, white, to reddish white. Regardless of Mn doping and its concentration, all QDs possess high PL quantum yield levels of 74-79%. Those undoped and doped QDs are then employed as an emitting layer (EML) of all-solution-processed QD-light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with hybrid charge transport layers and their electroluminescence (EL) is compared. Compared to undoped QDs, doped analogues give rise to a huge spectral disparity of EL versus PL, specifically showing a near-complete quenching of Mn<SUP>2+</SUP> EL. This unexpected observation is rationalized primarily by considering unbalanced carrier injection to QD EML on the basis of energetic alignment of the present QLED and rapid trapping of holes injected at intragap states of QDs.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Sasa quelpaertensis Leaf Extract Improves High Fat Diet-Induced Lipid Abnormalities and Regulation of Lipid Metabolism Genes in Rats

        Sasa quelpaertensis is a bamboo leaf that is only grown on Jeju Island in South Korea. It is used as a bamboo tea that is consumed for therapeutic purposes, particularly for its anti-diabetic, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory effects. This study investigated the effect of S. quelpaertensis leaf extract (SQE) on high fat-induced lipid abnormalities and regulation of lipid metabolism-related gene expressions in rats. SQE supplementation significantly decreased the levels of plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol as well as the atherogenic index. SQE restored levels of plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which were lowered by a high fat diet. Plasma and cardiac resistin levels were also significantly decreased by SQE supplementation. In adipose tissue, mRNA levels of CAAT/enhancer-binding protein <TEX>${\beta}$</TEX> (<TEX>$C/EBP{\beta}$</TEX>) were suppressed in the SQE group. SQE supplementation decreased the accumulation of lipid droplets, inflammatory cell infiltrations, levels of triglycerides, and total lipids in the liver and effectively down-regulated expression of sterol regulatory element binding protein-1 (SREBP-1), fatty acid synthetase (FAS), and uncoupling protein 2 (UCP-2). These results suggest that SQE may be a potential treatment for high fat-related disorders by improving lipid profiles and modulating lipid metabolism.

        Selective Oxidative Degradation of Organic Pollutants by Singlet Oxygen-Mediated Photosensitization: Tin Porphyrin versus C<sub>60</sub> Aminofullerene Systems

        <P>This study evaluates the potential application of tin porphyrin- and C<SUB>60</SUB> aminofullerene-derivatized silica (SnP/silica and aminoC<SUB>60</SUB>/silica) as <SUP>1</SUP>O<SUB>2</SUB> generating systems for photochemical degradation of organic pollutants. Photosensitized <SUP>1</SUP>O<SUB>2</SUB> production with SnP/silica, which was faster than with aminoC<SUB>60</SUB>/silica, effectively oxidized a variety of pharmaceuticals. Significant degradation of pharmaceuticals in the presence of the 400-nm UV cutoff filter corroborated visible light activation of both photosensitizers. Whereas the efficacy of aminoC<SUB>60</SUB>/silica for <SUP>1</SUP>O<SUB>2</SUB> production drastically decreased under irradiation with λ > 550 nm, Q-band absorption caused negligible loss of the photosensitizing activity of SnP/silica in the long wavelength region. Faster destruction of phenolates by SnP/silica and aminoC<SUB>60</SUB>/silica under alkaline pH conditions further implicated <SUP>1</SUP>O<SUB>2</SUB> involvement in the oxidative degradation. Direct charge transfer mediated by SnP, which was inferred from nanosecond laser flash photolysis, induced significant degradation of neutral phenols under high power light irradiation. Self-sensitized destruction caused gradual activity loss of SnP/silica in reuse tests unlike aminoC<SUB>60</SUB>/silica. The kinetic comparison of SnP/silica and TiO<SUB>2</SUB> photocatalyst in real wastewater effluents showed that photosensitized singlet oxygenation of pharmaceuticals was still efficiently achieved in the presence of background organic matters, while significant interference was observed for photocatalyzed oxidation involving non-selective OH radical.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2012/esthag.2012.46.issue-17/es301775k/production/images/medium/es-2012-01775k_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es301775k'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

        Early childhood eating behaviors associated with risk of overweight and its socio-ecological determinants in Korean preschool children

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identif y preschool children’s eating behaviors associated with early childhood obesity and its multi-level, socio-ecological determinants. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of 364 mothers of preschool children aged 3–5 years, these children’s healthy eating behaviors were assessed using a validated preschool nutrition quotient (NQ-P) questionnaire. The children’s over weight or obesity statuses were determined based on body mass index percentiles from the 2017 Korean National Growth Chart. The associations between the NQ-P score and risk of over weight or obesity were examined using multivariable logistic regression. The associations of individual, maternal, physical, and media environmental factors with the NQ-P score were also examined using multivariable linear regression. RESULTS: Preschool children with greater NQ-P scores were at a significantly lower risk of over weight or obesity (P < 0.01). The NQ-P score had a significantly positive association with maternal body mass index and an inverse association with household income (all P < 0.05). Maternal parenting and feeding practices exhibited associations with the NQ-P score. Positive associations were obser ved with “warm,” “structured,” and “autonomy-supportive” parenting as well as monitoring feeding practices (all P < 0.05). In addition, the NQ-P score had a significantly positive association with the childcare center’s anti-obesogenic environment, such as the provision of nutritional and physical-activity support and vicinity of the built food environment to the home, including access to good-quality food, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat foods (all P < 0.05). Regarding media environments, the NQ-P score demonstrated more significant associations with viewing and eating and/or cooking content displayed on online video platforms (all P < 0.05) than with that on television. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirm the significance of healthy eating behaviors in early- childhood-obesity prevention and underscore the importance of multilevel maternal, physical, and media environmental inter ventions that effectively guide eating behaviors in preschool children.
