This study examined to identify genetic variants associated with maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV), an important spirometry parameter presenting inspiratory muscle strength.</P><P>A total of 8842 Korean subjects participated in the Korean Association REsource Consortium were used to identify nucleotide variants associated with MVV and other spirometry parameters through a GWAS. Genetic associations were determined by employing a mixed model that can control background polygenic effects.</P><P>The analysis revealed 3 nucleotide variants associated with MVV (<I>P</I> < 5 × 10−8). One (rs1496255) was also associated with FVC and FEV1. The other 2 variants were identified only for MVV and located in the genes of <I>LOC102724340</I> (rs41434646) and <I>FHIT</I> (rs9833533). In particular, FHIT represses transcriptional activity of β-catenin, a critical protein for growth of skeletal muscle, and thus might have influenced the level of MVV.</P><P>The current study revealed 2 novel nucleotide variants as genetic association signals for MVV. The association signals were suggested specific for neuromuscular diseases with a restrictive ventilatory impairment. Further studies are required to understand underlying mechanisms for their influence to restrictive lung diseases.</P></▼2>

Two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Koch) is one of the serious pests in economically important crops such as strawberry and cucumber and so on. Acaricides have been used as the main control agents. This study was conducted to test the synergistic effects of the Beauveria bassiana GHA, which has been registered for whitefly and thrips, and five pesticides (abamectin, acrinathrin, bifenthrin imidacloprid, dinotefuran, and indoxacarb, which are commonly used pesticides in strawberry in Korea), on the two-spotted spider mite T. urticae. Five tested pesticides did not inhibit spore germination and mycelial growth of B. bassiana. Pesticides were applied to potted strawberry plants at four different treatments (recommended concentration, 1/5 recommended concentration, 1/5 recommended concentration + GHA(108 conidia/ml), and only GHA(108 conidia/ml). Mortality in larvae of two-spotted spider mite was 12% in GHA 5 day after treatment. Mortality in abamectin treated T. urticae was 98.5% and 100% at 1/5 recommended concentration and recommended concentration, respectively, 3 days after treatment. Acrinathrin, indoxacarbe, dinotefuran and difenthrin imidacloprid caused 60%, 14%, 16% and 91% mortality at recommended concentration 5 day after treatment. The tested five pesticides and B. bassiana GHA had no synergistic effect.

Purpose: This cross-sectional study aimed to describe subjective health status of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), identify factors that affect good subjective health status and investigate the relationship between good subjective health status and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in people with CKD. Methods: This secondary analysis utilized data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2019-2020. Participants (N=295) had an eGFR of ≤59 mL/min/1.73 ㎡. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors affecting good subjective health status and examine the association between good subjective health status and HRQOL. Results: Among all participants, 61.4% had good subjective health status, and the HRQOL index was 0.88 in people with CKD. Household income, activity limitation, stress, and the number of comorbidities in people with CKD were associated with good subjective health status. People with better subjective health status were more likely to be satisfied with self-care, usual activities, and pain/discomfort in HRQOL. Conclusion: Good subjective health status is associated with better HRQOL. Therefore, subjective health status should be assessed early, and a nursing intervention program should be developed considering factors that can improve subjective health status in people with CKD.

Although CD4^+ T cell responses to protein-derived antigen have well been understood. the epitopes recognized by hapten-specific CD4^+ T cells have not been fully defined. In this study. we characterized the response of a T cell hybridoma (5D10.1B8) which is specific for a hapten. N-hydroxysuccinimidyl-4-azidobenzoate (HSAB) restricted by MHC class Ⅱ I-A^d. Using three different antigen presenting cells (APCs) expressing I-A^d. the role of class Ⅱ MHC proteins in haptenic antigen presentation and subsequent activation of 5D10.1B8 has been examined. Activation of 5D10.1B8 T cells by HSAB analogs was also performed. Our results show that each APC activated T cells differentially and that interleukin-2 (IL-2) augmented antigen-presenting ability of all the APCs, suggesting that increased expression of class Ⅱ MHC protein by IL-2 played an important role in HSAB presentation and T cell activation. Finally, early T cell receptor-dependent signals induced by HSAB or its analogs were examined by phosphotyrosine immunoblot analysis. and showed that tyrosine phosphorylation level of a 18-20 kD protein increased upon stimulation.
