Oxygen is necessary to sustain life, but reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by oxygen metabolism can cause mutations and toxicity. ROS can damage cellular macromolecules, leading to oxidative stress, which can accelerate cell death and aging. ROS generated in food affect the taste, color, and aroma of food, and high levels of ROS in meat can cause spoilage. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) plays an important role in scavenging ROS in food and reducing their toxicity to organisms. SOD exerts its antioxidant effect by catalyzing the breakdown of O2-• to H2O2. As a natural antioxidant, SOD has the ability to regenerate and maintain its activity over a long period of time without depletion, unlike chemical antioxidants that may have side effects or stability issues. This antioxidant effect of SOD has great potential in a variety of industries, and in the food industry it can be utilized to improve product quality and provide safe and healthy products to consumers. By disrupting the SOD2 and SOD3 genes in Candida albicans, we studied the effects of SOD2 and SOD3 genes on the antioxidant system, suggesting its potential as a natural antioxidant.

2,4,3’,5′-Tetramethoxystilbene (TMS) is a selective inhibitor of cytochrome P450 1B1 to block the conversion from estradiol to 4-OH-estradiol. Several studies suggested that TMS may act as a potent anti-cancer agent for hormone-related cancer including cervical cancer. Nutlin-3a is a cis-imidazoline analog that interferes with the interaction between mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2) and the tumor suppressor p53. The purpose of the study was to compare the cytotoxic effect of TMS and nutlin-3a treatment individually and in combination in HeLa cells. To assess the potential synergistic effects between TMS and nutlin-3a, low concentrations of TMS and nutlin-3a were simultaneously treated in HeLa cells. Based on cell viability, apoptosis assays, and the increase in cleaved caspase-3 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage, it was demonstrated that the combination with TMS and nutlin-3a exerts a synergistic effect on cancer cell death. Isobologram analysis of HeLa cells noted synergism between TMS and nutlin-3a. The combined treatment increased the expression of mitochondrial pro-apoptotic factors such as Bax and Bak, and decreased the expression of the XIAP. In addition, combination treatment significantly enhanced the translocation of AIF to the nucleus in HeLa cells. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that the combination of TMS and nutlin-3a induces synergistic apoptosis in HeLa cells, suggesting the possibility that this combination can be applied as a novel therapeutic strategy for cervical cancer.

<P>High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has been suggested to be associated with breast cancer. However, the roles of HDL-C and hypertriglyceridemia on breast cancer still have been controversial. The goal of this study was to investigate the association between HDL-C with breast cancer risk, stratifying by menopausal status, and body mass index. The hormonal receptor status of breast has been proposed to modify the effect of HDL-C on breast cancer. Multicenter hospital-based case-control study was conducted from November 2004 to December 2005 in Korea. After one to two individual matchings by age (+/-5 years) and menopausal status, 690 cases and 1,380 controls were included in the analysis. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated by conditional, unconditional, and multinomial logistic regressions. Protective effect of HDL-C on breast cancer was only observed among premenopausal women with an OR (95% CI) of 0.49 (0.33-0.72) for HDL-C > or = 60 versus <50 mg/dL (P(trend) < 0.01). Only nonobese premenopausal women had a significant decreased risk (OR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.22-0.53). OR (95% CI) of low HDL-C (<50 mg/dL) and high triglyceride (TG; > or = 150 mg/dL) category was 2.20 (1.32-3.67) on estrogen receptor-negative and progesterone receptor-negative breast cancer compared with high HDL-C (> or = 50 mg/dL) and low TG (<150 mg/dL) category. This study suggests that higher level of HDL-C may reduce breast cancer risk among premenopausal women. Estrogen receptor-negative and progesterone receptor-negative breast cancer was associated with dyslipidemia, which implicates that association among HDL-C, TG, and breast cancer may be modified by receptor status.</P>

항공관제시스템을 구성하는 하부 시스템중 하나인 감시자료처리시스템(SDP, Surveillance Data Processor)은 항공 감시 레이더 등 다양한 감시 센서로부터 감시자료를 전달 받아 항공기의 항적을 추적하는 시스템으로서, SDP의 항적 추적 성능은 항공기의 안전 운항에 직접적인 영향을 미친다. 따라서 개발과정에서 SDP의 요구 성능에 대한 검증은 필수적이며, 특히 대표적인 다중 센서 다중 타겟 추적(Multi-Sensor Multi-Target Tracking)시스템으로서 다양한 타겟 추적 방법이 존재함에 따라 정량적인 추적 정확도 성능 평가가 중요하게 여겨지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 현재 한국항공우주연구원에서 개발 중인 SDP의 항적 추적 성능검증을 위한 요구 성능 정의, 테스트 환경 구축, 테스트 결과에 대해 정리하였다. As a sub-system of an air traffic control system, SDP(Surveillance Data Processor) provides with the system tracks of aircraft using the surveillance sensor data from various air traffic surveillance sensors, such as radars. Therefore, the high accuracy of tracking results is a crucial requirement for safe flights, and verification of the required system performance of SDP is an essential step in development. Moreover, the quantitative evaluation of target tracking accuracy is important for newly developed SDP, since there are several tracking methods for Multi-Sensor Multi-Target Tracking, such as MRT(Multi Radar Tracking), inevitably required as the main function of SDP. In this study, definition of required system performances, establishment of test environment, and test results for MRT performance evaluation of SDP, which is being developed in KARI(Korea Airspace Research Institute) are presented.
색상 및 세탁견뢰도의 정량적 분석을 통한 신형 전투복 원단의 색상신뢰성 연구

A new combat uniform is improved for added combat safety with various functions such as survivability, battle conformity and a camouflage performance system. Camouflage performance is an important factor in terms of combat survivability since it makes identification difficult and provide security. The combat uniform is worn under extreme conditions (exposure to ultraviolet light, sweat and friction) and an excellent color fastness to repeated washing is required. In this study, we investigated the color management, durability and discoloration of new combat uniform fabric with a digital pattern for camouflage performance to provide preliminary color management data. We examined color differences between standard fabric and mass-produced combat uniform fabrics, color differences between each military supply contract firm and color changes in combat uniforms after 60 washing cycles. The slight color differences between standard fabric and mass-produced combat uniform fabrics were tolerable under quality criteria of Republic of Korea Ministry of National Defense. However, the differences between the military supply contract firms were recognizable to the naked eye and increased with repeated washing. Continuous research on color fastness under repeated washing and color management is required to standardize reliability from each military supply contract firm for the daytime performance of a combat uniform``s camouflage.
Improvement of olfactory satisfaction of the biodegradable fragrance compounds

This study related to a biodegradable fragrance composition, which has a high degree of biodegradability and is easily decomposed in a water environment. Sensory evaluation was performed to improve the olfactory preference and satisfaction of readily biodegradable fragrance compounds.

시각, 청각, 후각, 미각, 촉각은 인간의 5대 감각으로 인간의 생존과 직결되어 있다. 인간은 5가지 감각을 총동원하여 세상을 경험하고 위험으로부터 자신을 보호하며 상대방과 소통한다. 하나의 감각만 자극을 받는 것보다 동시다발적으로 주어지는 감각은 인식의 대상을 더욱 명확하고 깊게 경험할 수 있다. 기존의 크로스 모달 연관관계 연구는 하나의 감각이 다른 감각을 연상시키는 것에 초점을 맞춘 반면1), 본 연구에서는 접근방식을 바꿔 향기에서 속도를 의미하는 증기압과 음악에서 속도를 의미하는 진동수를 수식으로 연결하여 향기와 음악을 함께 경험할 수 있는 초기연구를 진행하였다. 그 결과 136개의 화학 향료성분과 피아노 음정을 매칭하였으며, 음악으로부터 향기를 조향하는 새로운 조향 방법을 개발하였다. The five basic human senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch are directly related to human survival. Humans use all five senses to perceive the world, protect themselves from danger, and communicate with each other. As the sensory systems function simultaneously, not one at a time, humans are able to perceive an object more clearly and deeply. While traditional cross-modal association studies focus on the associations between sensory systems, we took a different approach. In this study, an initial study was conducted to cross-experience scent and music by connecting the vapor pressure, determining speed in scent, and the frequency, determining speed of sound, with a simple formula. As a result of this study, 136 chemical fragrance components and piano notes were matched, and a new perfumery method was developed to create scent from music.
