Oral spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma (SCRMS) with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) expression is extremely rare, and its diagnosis is very challenging in the absence of clinical or pathological indicators. This case presented with gingival swelling and alveolar bone resorption and was suspected clinically to be periodontitis. A biopsy was performed and, due to immunoreactivity with ALK, the patient was misdiagnosed with inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. However, based on the combined histological and immunohistochemical features, a revised diagnosis of SCRMS with ALK expression was finally concluded. We believe that this report makes a significant contribution to the precise diagnosis of this rare disease for proper treatment.
What Leads to the Success of Climate Technology Centre and Network Pro Bono Technical Assistance?
Lee, Wona,Bak, Inhye,Kim, Hyung-Ju,Yang, Rywon 한국기후변화학회 2020 한국기후변화학회지 Vol.11 No.5
Recently, there has been increasing interest from the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) advisory board on receiving pro bono support, additional financing, material, and expert support that may be provided by donors and other partners. However, there are no specific guidelines or procedures on pro bono support that may be referenced by interested parties. The Republic of Korea is one of the most active participants of pro bono support, providing up to 13 Technical Assistance (TA) as of 2020. This research is aimed at identifying the critical success factors (CSFs) of CTCN TA based on its project life cycle to derive the best practices for future references. This was undertaken using a pair-wise comparison of the analytic hierarchy process to responses from relevant stakeholders with experience in conducting CTCN TA. Then, we observed the causal mechanism of the most important factors by tracing the process of the previous two pro bono TAs provided by the Korean National Designated Entity (NDE). This analysis showed that effective stakeholder consultation and project substantiality was the most important success factor throughout the project life cycle. Additionally, evidence from the two pro bono TA cases was retrieved to identify the causal mechanisms underpinning these factors.

To aim at advancing the Korea’s insurance industry, new regulations such as business expense disclosure, RBC solvency, and allowance for sales of bancassurance have been introduced in the 2000s. In this regard, this study empirically analyzes whether the value of insurance companies reflects KOSPI, characteristics of insurance product portfolios, proportion of bancassurance sales, representative management effectiveness indices such as loss ratio, expense ratio, surrender value ratio, and risk-based capital ratio. For casualty insurance companies listed on the Korea stock market, we develop a regression model based on Ohlson model, and our new model includes additional explanatory variables reflecting characteristics of insurance companies. We subdivided the model into two regression models, which are a level-based model generalized from the Ohlson model, and a logistic incremental model. The analysis shows that the new model accounts for the value of insurance companies better than the Ohlson model that has only summarized accounting information. In the level-based model, the value-relevant explanatory variables amongst which are additionally included in the model are KOSPI, surrender value ratio, proportion of bancassurance sales, proportion of long-term insurance sales, and loss ratio in the decreasing order of relevance. Similarly, in the logistic incremental model, proportion of long-term insurance sales, surrender value ratio, and loss ratio have showed significant explanatory power.

The first edition of ‘A Standardized Pathology Report for Gastric Cancer’ was initiated by the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists and published 17 years ago. Since then, significant advances have been made in the pathologic diagnosis, molecular genetics, and management of gastric cancer (GC). To reflect those changes, a committee for publishing a second edition of the report was formed within the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists. This second edition consists of two parts: standard data elements and conditional data elements. The standard data elements contain the basic pathologic findings and items necessary to predict the prognosis of GC patients, and they are adequate for routine surgical pathology service. Other diagnostic and prognostic factors relevant to adjuvant therapy, including molecular biomarkers, are classified as conditional data elements to allow each pathologist to selectively choose items appropriate to the environment in their institution. We trust that the standardized pathology report will be helpful for GC diagnosis and facilitate large-scale multidisciplinary collaborative studies.

Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is usually caused by extrinsic compression or invasion of the superior vena cava (SVC) by malignant tumors involving mediastinal structures. Although thymomas are well-known causes of SVCS, cases of SVCS caused by malignant thymomas protruding into adjacent vessels draining the SVC with thrombosis have been very rarely reported worldwide. We experienced a 39-year-old female patient with SVCS that developed after the direct invasion of the left brachiocephalic vein (LBCV) and SVC by an anterior mediastinal mass with a high maximum standardized uptake value on the chest computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography-CT. Based on these results, she underwent en bloc resection of the tumor, including removal of the involved vessels, and was eventually diagnosed as having a type B2 thymoma permeating into the LBCV and SVC. We present this case as a very rare form of SVCS caused by an invasive thymoma.
