Automatic human fall detection based on video monitoring plays an important role in protecting vulnerable people especially the seniors whose falls could cause severe injuries and need attentions from others immediately. In this paper, an automatic human fall detection method based on human motion tracking and shape aspect ratio in real-time video is proposed. While most existing methods detect falls in homes, the proposed method is suitable for both outdoor and indoor environments. The method first detects human objects in general environment, then tracks their motions, meanwhile calculating and recording the motion characteristics of each person. Comparing with the existing fall detection method using shape aspect ratio, the proposed method has advantages of employing the shape aspect ratio together with the moving speed and direction to better detect human falls, as well as being able to detect falls toward different directions. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively detect human falls in general environments including outdoor places.
An Efficient Blind Detection Algorithm of Median Filtered Image

Due to the significant advances of digital photography and the availability of many powerful photo editing tools, it becomes easier to create forgery images by non-professional users. Median filtering that is usually applied to erase the forensically significant fingerprints has recently received increased attention. In this paper, we present an effective blind forensic algorithm to detect the median filtering manipulation. First, the median filtered residual (MFR) is generated by computing the difference between a testing image and a median filtered version of itself. Then, three feature sets including histogram, autocorrelation and gradient are extracted from the median filter residual. Last, those features are fetched into support vector machine (SVM) for training and classification. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed forensic method achieves not only better detection rate but also lower computational complexity compared with other existing median filtering detection methods. Our proposed forensic method also can locate local median filtering of image effectively.

A novel eudesmane-type sesquiterpene compound, 1-oxoeudesm-11(13)-eno-12,8a-lactone (OEL), was isolated from Aster himalaicus. Its effect on apoptosis in human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cells was investigated. MTT assay showed that OEL substantially reduced the viability of KB, MCF-7, U87, A172, and MG-63 cells. MCF-7 cells were used to further evaluate the antitumor effects and anticancer mechanisms of OEL. OEL-induced apoptosis was characterized by chromatin condensation, formation of apoptotic bodies, and phosphatidylserine on extracellular surface; these effects were confirmed by DAPI nuclear staining and flow cytometry. Increased expression of Bax and deceased expression of Bcl-2 were also observed in OELtreated MCF-7 cells. Moreover, OEL induced the loss of mitochondria membrane potential, release of cytochrome C, activation of caspase-9, and generation of reactive oxygen species. These findings indicate that reactive oxygen species generation and mitochondria activation were involved in apoptosis induced by OEL in MCF-7 cells. The results from our study demonstrated that OEL may be a promising pro-apoptotic compound that could be used to develop novel anticancer drugs.

The introduction of renewable energy sources into the AC grid can change and weaken the strength of the grid, which will in turn affect the stability and robustness of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind farm. When integrated with weak grids, the DFIG wind turbine with vector power control often suffers from poor performance and robustness, while the DFIG wind turbine with synchronized control provides better stability. This paper investigates the critical short circuit ratios of DFIG wind turbine with vector power control and synchronized control, to analyze the stability boundary of the DFIG wind turbine. Frequency domain methods based on sensitivity and complementary sensitivity of transfer matrix are used to investigate the stability boundary conditions. The critical capacity of DFIG wind farm with conventional vector power control at a certain point of common coupling (PCC) is obtained and is further increased by employing synchronized control properly. The stability boundary is validated by electromagnetic transient simulation of an offshore wind farm connected to a real regional grid.

Taking advantage of the high specific strength, structural efficiency, and rigidity of spherical multi-intersecting high-stiffened integral panels, they have been used on a manned space station as the main load-bearing structure. Due to their large size and complex structure, a new incremental die forming approach was proposed, where the panel is pressed by a relatively small die at devised positions multiple times in proper order. However, the springback behavior of the panel after each depression is extremely complicated due to the interactions between multi-intersecting ribs. In this paper, a numerical approach of springback prediction for a typical intersecting stiffened panel in spherical die forming was proposed and the corresponding algorithm was developed. The approach quantifi es the influence between multi-intersecting ribs by a novel defi nition of a bending neutral layer on the panel: the 3-D springback of whole panel is equivalent to the 2-D springback of the ribs. The strain component led by skin deformation and its elastic release are considered. A plasticity model with a nonlinear strain hardening of material was adopted. The approach was employed to predict the springback of panels with different forming radii, different rib sizes, and local large-rigidity structures. A rapid springback compensation based on the approach was achieved. The calculated results are in strong agreement with the results of FEM simulations based on ABAQUS software and experiments, accurately predicting profiles error within 2 mm.
