      • The Effect of Acupuncture Therapy on Pain Perception and Coping Strategies: A Preliminary Report

        Dorit Gamus,Vered Meshulam-Atzmon,Shay Pintov,Rebecca Jacoby 사단법인약침학회 2008 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.1 No.1

The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of acupuncture on the perception of pain and coping strategies, thus focusing on the psychological aspects of pain. The study was conducted in two complementary and alternative medicine clinics of public hospitals. Forty-one patients scheduled for routine acupuncture therapy because of chronic musculoskeletal pain were recruited for the study to receive eight acupuncture treatments. Twenty-four patients completed the treatment schedule and filled two self-reported questionnaires before and after therapy: (1) Illness Perception Questionnaire—Revised (IPQ-R); and (2) Coping Strategies questionnaire (Brief COPE). A significant improvement was found in the following measures related to pain perception: timeline (chronic versus acute), treatment control, and personal control. Additionally, significant improvement was displayed in three measures related to coping strategies: positive reframing, religion, and venting. The results indicate that acupuncture therapy might be efficient in changing patient’s pain perception from chronic to acute and in enhancing their sense of personal and treatment control over their pain. In addition, acupuncture therapy partially improved coping strategies. The present study provides further validation for acupuncture therapy in pain and highlights its possible role in affecting the psychological aspects of pain. • Oral and Pharyngeal Cancer Among the Arab Population in israel from 1970 to 2006

Zini, Avraham,Nasser, Nasser,Vered, Yuval Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.2

Background: Israeli Arabs are considered as a developing society characterized by poverty and high levels of smoking among men. The purpose of this study was to describe their incidence, mortality and survival rates for oral and pharyngeal cancer between the years 1970-2006. Studies such as this in the Arab world, where the population is almost the same as the Arab population in Israel, are rare. Methods: The incidence and survival data were derived from all relevant registered data at the National Cancer Registry. The group of lesions included cancer of the lips, tongue, buccal mucosa, floor of the mouth, salivary glands, gums, palate and pharynx. Morphological description was according to WHO classification. Results: Most diagnosed patients were male. The mean age was 54.4 years, and mean years of survival were 3.83. The oropharynx was the most common site (28.3%) while the palate was the least frequent (3.12%). Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was the most common histological feature (66.3%), while basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was the least (3.9%). The overall 5 years survival rate was 59.4%, this being highest for BCC (82.1%), while SCC was significantly lower (56.2%) (p<0.001). Lip cancers survived better than other sites. Conclusions: Data from this society are similar to other developing societies in the majority of the results. The incidence of oral and pharyngeal cancer is lower among the Arab population, in comparison to the Jewish population in Israel.

Curcumin Promotes Primary Oral Wound Healing in a Rat Model

        Liat Chaushu,Marina Rahmanov Gavrielov,Gabi Chaushu,Keidar Zar,Marilena Vered 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.4

Curcumin is known as an anti-tumor, anti-aging, and wound healing promoter. The aim this study was to examine the effect of 2% curcumin paste application on primary wound healing in a palatal rat model. A mid-crestal incision was initiated on the maxillary alveolar ridge. A full thickness flap was raised on either side of the incision and was then repositioned and sutured. Experimental groups consisted of 2% curcumin (Cur), orabase (O), cut only (C), and intact control—no incision, no paste (N). Curcumin 2% and orabase were applied postoperatively every 12 h for 3 consecutive days. Rats were equally killed after 1 and 2 weeks. Histological data included—epithelial gap, inflammatory infiltrate, myofibroblasts, epithelial and connective tissue stem cell-related markers. Data were collected at two time points—1 and 2 weeks. There was no residual epithelial gap 1 week from incision in the Cur and O group vs. residual gap in the C group (P = .031). Curcumin 2% was associated with upregulated expression of epithelial-related markers (P < .05) although not statistically significant compared with orabase alone. Upregulation of connective tissue-related markers (P < .05) was unique to curcumin 2%. Curcumin promotes epithelial gap closure in a primary wound healing model in rats, possibly through upregulation of connective tissue stem cells leading to further epithelial differentiation and proliferation. Tel-Aviv University Animal Care Committee (approval Number: 01-16-031).

Ethnic Differences in Anorectal Manometry Findings in Patients With Fecal Incontinence: Results From a Multiethnic Cohort According to the London Classification

        Daniel L Cohen,Amir Mari,Anton Bermont,Dana Zelnik Yovel,Vered Richter,Haim Shirin 대한소화기 기능성질환∙운동학회 2023 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.29 No.3

Background/AimsClinical rates of fecal incontinence (FI) are known to vary based on race and ethnicity. It is unclear if anorectal manometry (ARM) findings in patients with FI differ based on ethnicity. MethodsHigh-resolution ARM studies performed between 2014-2021 due to FI at 2 hospitals with multiethnic populations were retrospectively reviewed. ResultsFour hundred and seventy-nine subjects were included––87 (18.2%) Arab Israelis, 76 (15.9%) immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and 316 (66.0%) Jewish Israelis. Median age was 67 years old (76.0% women: 90.4% were parous). The Arab Israeli group had higher rates of smoking, diabetes, and obesity. Over 95% of ARM’s were abnormal per the London classification including 23% with “combined anal hypotension and hypocontractility,” 36% with “anal normotension with anal hypocontractility,” 67% with “dyssynergia,” and 65% with either “rectal hyposensation” or “borderline rectal hyposensation.” On univariate analyses, significant differences between the ethnic groups were noted in the rates of “anal hypotension with normal contractility,” “combined anal hypotension with anal hypocontractility,” and “dyssynergia.” In multivariate logistic regression analyses controlling for age, gender, parity, smoking, diabetes, and obesity, the Arab Israeli group remained several times more likely to have “combined anal hypotension and hypocontractibility” compared to the other groups. ConclusionsEthnicity impacts ARM findings in patients with FI. The reason for this is unclear and future studies on ethnically diverse populations evaluating the clinical relevance of these findings are warranted.

      • Photocatalyst separation from aqueous dispersion using graphene oxide/TiO2 nanocomposites

        Szabo, T.,Veres, A.,Cho, E.,Khim, J.,Varga, N.,Dekany, I. Elsevier 2013 Colloids and surfaces. A, Physicochemical and engi Vol.433 No.-

A series of nanocomposite photocatalysts was prepared from aqueous dispersions of Degussa P25 TiO2 and exfoliated graphite oxide (GO) by heterocoagulation. The structure and catalytic activity of samples in the photooxidation of phenol were characterized in line with their separability by controlled settling experiments at different pHs, irradiation times and mechanical exposure. It was found that single or few-layer graphene oxide sheets were dispersed uniformly in the matrix of titanium dioxide aggregates and were partially reduced to oxygen-containing graphene-like carbon. Although the presence of GO was associated with a loss of photocatalytic efficiency, it has induced an accelerated sedimentation of catalyst slurry as compared to pure TiO2, resulting in the complete separation of photocatalyst from the treated water in a highly reduced time scale. The loose physical network of weakly adhered particles can be destroyed by sonication or other strong mechanical impacts, but spontaneous aggregation occurs upon mild redispersion. Therefore, heterocoagulation is reversibly induced and can be used to collect the finely suspended catalyst particles worn off from the composite. Extensive reuse of the catalyst without its abrasion and the concomitant need of its post-treatment separation is thus possible. Along with the beneficial sedimentation properties of the composites, this facilitates their use for large scale treatment of waste waters.
