Objective: Endometritis is a major disease, that causes infertility in cattle, and is usually categorized as clinical or subclinical endometritis (SCE). The nutritional condition during the dry period is important for recovery after the last stage of the lactation period, and for postpartum production and reproduction. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between nutritional and metabolic characteristics in the dry period, and the risk of postpartum SCE. Methods: Multiparous Holstein dairy cows (n = 25, raised in a tied stall) were used. Endometrial cytological analysis was performed around 30 days post-partum, with 5% to 14% polymorphonuclear (PMN) as a cut-off point to define SCE. Serum levels of glucose, non-esterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), blood urea nitrogen, total cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium were measured in the cows at the dry period to evaluate energy status, protein metabolism, and mineral metabolism. Results: The incidence of SCE in the cows was 60.0% (n = 15/25) and the mean PMN% in postpartum cows diagnosed as SCE was 8.05%±2.6%. Overall, 17 and 8 samples were collected from the cows in the far-off and close-up periods, respectively. The serum concentration of BHBA in the far-off period and serum glucose concentration in the closeup period were correlated with postpartum PMN% (r = 0.62, p<0.01; r = –0.74, p<0.05, respectively). Serum levels of calcium and magnesium in the dry period were associated with the incidence of postpartum SCE (healthy vs SCE cows, p<0.05). Conclusion: Blood levels of glucose, BHBA, calcium, and magnesium in dry periods could be useful parameters for predicting the risk of postpartum SCE. The present study also suggests that management in the close-up period is essential for promoting recovery from calving fatigue. THE HST COSMOS PROJECT: CONTRIBUTION FROM THE SUBARU TELESCOPE

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) treasury project. The COSMOS aims to perform a 2 square degree imaging survey of an equatorial field in I(F814W) band, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Such a wide field survey, combined with ground-based photometric and spectroscopic data, is essential to understand the interplay between large scale structure, evolution and formation of galaxies and dark matter. In 2004, we have obtained high-quality, broad band images of the COSMOS field (B, V, r', i', and z') using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, and we have started our new optical multi-band program, COSMOS-21 in 2005. Here, we present a brief summary of the current status of the COSMOS project together with contributions from the Subaru Telescope. Our future Subaru program, COSMOS-21, is also discussed briefly.
ERRATUM : 'LYMANα EMITTERS BEYOND REDSHIFT 5: THE DAWN OF GALAXY FORMATION' (JKAS, 36, 123, [2003])
Taniguchi, Yoshiaki,Shioya, Yasuhiro,Ajiki, Masaru,Fujita, Shinobu S.,Nagao, Tohru,Murayama, Takashi The Korean Astronomical Society 2003 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.36 No.4
The first sentence in the second paragraph of INTRODUCTION, 'The first discovery of a galaxy beyond z=5 was reported by Weymann et al. (1998); HDF 4-470.3 at z=5.60.' should be read as 'The first discovery of a galaxy beyond z=5 was reported by Dey et al. (1998); 0140+326 RD1 at z=5.34'. The authors sincerely regret this error.
Numerical simulation of the crack propagation behavior in 3D elastic body
Taniguchi, Takeo,Miyaji, Akihiko,Suetsugu, Takeshi,Matsunaga, Shohgo Techno-Press 1994 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.2 No.3
The purpose of this investigation is to propose a numerical simulation method of the crack propagation behavior in 3-dimensionl elastic body. The simulation method is based on the displacement-type finite element method, and the linear fracture theory is introduced. The results from the proposed method are compared with those from the structural experiments, and the good coincidences between them are shown in this paper. At the same time, 2-dimensional analysis is also done, and the results are compared with those obtained from 3-dimensional analysis and the structural experiments.
A Geographical Study on Water Environmental Changes in the Urban Rivers in Tokyo, Japan
Taniguchi, Tomomasa The Korean Society of Limnology 2005 생태와 환경 Vol.38 No.S
It is important to assess the change of water environment in the present and past. In this study, present-day water quality standards are applied to the expressions in literary works to reconstruct the historical water environment including the quality. As the result, the historical reconstruction of water quality has been made distribution of water quality from 1905 to 1935 for the Sumida River in Tokyo.
