A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a destructive event that causes a permanent deficit in neurological function because of poor regenerative potential. Transplantation therapies have attracted attention for restoration of the injured spinal cord, and transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) has been studied worldwide. Several groups have demonstrated functional recovery via this therapeutic intervention due to the multiple beneficial effects of NPC transplantation, such as reconstruction of neuronal circuits, remyelination of axons, and neuroprotection by trophic factors. Our group developed a method to induce NPCs from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and established a transplantation strategy for SCI. Functional improvement in SCI animals treated with hiPSC-NPCs was observed, and the safety of transplanting these cells was evaluated from multiple perspectives. With selection of a safe cell line and pretreatment of the cells to encourage maturation and differentiation, hiPSC-NPC transplantation therapy is now in the clinical phase of testing for subacute SCI. In addition, a research challenge will be to expand the efficacy of transplantation therapy for chronic SCI. More comprehensive strategies involving combination treatments are required to treat this problematic situation.
An extension plan of Yakushima Biosphere Reserve as a case study of consensus building of islanders

A participatory approach of local stakeholders is important to create a balance between nature protection and the sus¬tainable use of natural resources in a nature reserve and its vicinity area. The zoning and management policy of biosphere reserves (BRs) is a good example of this idea, especially for island reserves. Yakushima was inscribed as a World Natural Heritage (WH) in 1993. Almost all of its residents did not remember that Yakushima was a BR. In addition, Yakushima has some problems in nature reserve management. Overabundance of the deer population is a critical threat to both agricul¬ture and natural vegetation in the world heritage site. There are too many tourists visiting the WH site and Nagata-hama beach. The beach is a Ramsar site and one of the most important spawning grounds of sea turtles in the north Pacific. Now, residents and the municipality have decided to reactivate the Yakushima BR. Although the Ministry of the Environ-ment of Japan has an initiative to manage the WH and the Ramsar site, the BR is managed by the municipality and local stakeholders. Local activities of both nature conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources are encouraged in the BR site. The islanders willingly included all areas of the island into the BR site. Scientists who have participated in the Society of Yakushimaology have played a significant role to build trust between local stakeholders and to seek feasible policies on the nature reserves. The concept of the “Yakushima Environmental Culture Village” is a good model for the extension plan of the Yakushima and Kuchinoerabujima BRs.

The resources conservation system is comprehended, making Taean-haean National Park a research material by applying the fact of landowning, designation an LOP and Korea and Japan's Natural Park Act. Following conclusions were obtained in this study; Most of land areas of the National Park are privately owned; Only a few have been designated as Natural Reservation, a core reserved area on LOP, and a sandy beach, a sand dune, a sand spit, a tidal flat, a wetland, etc are distributed in the natural environment area so they were exposed to development; As seen in most of coastal type of National Parks, 13 commercial beaches are established. The annual rush to the beaches appears in July and August; and dune areas that have to be managed in terms of conservation, are turned into beaches. Moreover, the collective facilities areas are randomly developed. So they fail to function originally; The current Natural Park Act has no systematic devtices for conservation of the naturlal resourced ons the seashire or offishore.
