Changes in the global business environment continue at an accelerated pace. The 21st century maybe remarked, perhaps, for its hot issues on globalization and diversity. Diversity may arise in terms of ethnic, gender, age and culture. Cultural diversity out of all stands out in front in modern times as more multinational companies operate internationally resulting more people to start living abroad and work with people from different cultures. In recent years, these multinational companies realized the important roles human resource management play in international trade since cultural diversity is very influential on their work performance. A well-managed human resources will ensure organizations' success to a great extent. This paper touches the field of cultural diversity and introduces human resource management of international trade as a way to handle diversity matters faced by international organizations.

Sang-Woo Kim, Jae-Young Choi, and co-workers report on p. 2187 the electrical and structural stability of the nanogenerators, with excellent charge scavenging performance under external mechanical loads such as bending and rolling. <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>UDP-galactose 4-epimerase (GalE) catalyzes the interconversion of UDP-glucose (UDP-Glc) and UDP-galactose (UDP-Gal), which is a pivotal step in the Leloir pathway for <SMALL>D</SMALL>-galactose metabolism. Although GalE is widely distributed in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, little information is available regarding hyperthermophilic GalE. We overexpressed the TM0509 gene, encoding a putative GalE from <I>Thermotoga maritima</I> (TMGalE), in <I>Escherichia coli</I> and characterized the encoded protein. To further investigate the molecular basis of this enzyme's catalytic function, we determined the crystal structures of TMGalE and TMGalE bound to UDP-Glc at resolutions of 1.9 Å and 2.0 Å, respectively. The enzyme was determined to be a homodimer with a molecular mass of 70 kDa. The enzyme could reversibly catalyze the epimerization of UDP-GalNAc/UDP-GlcNAc as well as UDP-Gal/UDP-Glc at elevated temperatures, with an apparent optimal temperature and pH of 80 °C and 7.0, respectively. Our data showed that TM0509 is a UDP-galactosugar 4-epimerase involved in <SMALL>D</SMALL>-galactose metabolism; consequently, this study provides the first detailed characterization of a hyperthermophilic GalE. Moreover, the promiscuous substrate specificity of TMGalE, which is more similar to human GalE than <I>E. coli</I> GalE, supports the notion that TMGalE might exhibit the earliest form of sugar-epimerizing enzymes in the evolution of galactose metabolism.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> TMGalE is an enzyme that catalyzes the epimerization of UDP-hexose. </LI> <LI> We determined the crystal structures of TMGalE in complex with NAD<SUP>+</SUP> and UDP-glucose. </LI> <LI> This study provides molecular basis for the substrate promiscuity of TMGalE. </LI> <LI> The crystal structure may provide structural guide-lines for protein evolution. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P>The <I>gadB</I> gene encoding glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) from <I>Lactobacillus plantarum</I> was cloned and expressed in <I>Escherichia coli</I>. The recombinant enzyme exhibited maximal activity at 40 °C and pH 5.0. The 3D model structure of <I>L. plantarum</I> GAD proposed that its C-terminal region (Ile454–Thr468) may play an important role in the pH dependence of catalysis. Accordingly, C-terminally truncated (Δ3 and Δ11 residues) mutants were generated and their enzyme activities compared with that of the wild-type enzyme at different pH values. Unlike the wild-type GAD, the mutants showed pronounced catalytic activity in a broad pH range of 4.0–8.0, suggesting that the C-terminal region is involved in the pH dependence of GAD activity. Growth and piezoelectric properties of amorphous and crystalline (K1−xNax)NbO3−based thin films

(K 1−x Na x )NbO 3 (KNN)-based piezoelectric thin films have been extensively studied for application in micro-electromechanical systems. However, growing homogenous crystalline (K 1−x Na x )NbO 3 (CKNN) films with good piezoelectric properties is difficult because Na 2 O and K 2 O evaporate during the growth process at high temperatures. Recently, amorphous (K 1−x Na x )NbO 3 (AKNN) films containing KNN nanocrystals with good piezoelectric properties have been fabricated at low temperatures. Furthermore, [001]-oriented crystalline (K 1−x Na x )NbO 3 (OCKNN) films with excellent piezoelectric properties have been grown at low temperatures (≤ 350 °C) using a metal-oxide nanosheet seed layer. This novel method is excellent for the growth of homogeneous KNN thin films. These films were deposited on a polymer substrate; thus, they can be utilized in future flexible electronic devices. In this study, the structural and piezoelectric properties of AKNN- and CKNN-based films fabricated at high temperatures, along with the growth process and application of OCKNN-based thin films at low temperatures, are reviewed.
Optimal First-Line Therapy for Acute Low-Tone Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Background and Objectives: We aimed to analyze treatment outcomes following different initial management approaches and confirm treatment regimens for acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss (ALHL) that would yield the best results.Subjects and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 106 patients with ALHL who visited a university hospital’s otology clinic from March 2013 to June 2019. Pure-tone averages at the initial visit and at 2 and 4 weeks after the initial visit were evaluated.Results: Forty-nine patients were enrolled in this study; of them, 41 (83.7%) exhibited complete recovery (CR) at 2 weeks and 43 (87.8%) exhibited CR at 1 month after the initial visit. Regression analysis revealed that CR at 2 weeks after the initial visit was associated with diuretic use [Exp(B): 10.309, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.007-100]. An initial daily low-dose steroid use was marginally significant [Exp(B): 1.042, 95% CI: 0.997-1.092; p=0.066]. Isolated diuretic use [Exp(B): 25.641, 95% CI: 1.121-90.909; p=0.039] was an independent, good prognostic factor at 1 month after the initial visit. However, other treatment regimens did not affect the final results.Conclusions: A combination of initial daily administration of ≤30 mg prednisolone plus diuretics was sufficient as the first-line treatment for ALHL. High-dose steroids and salvage intratympanic steroid injections can be applied as a second choice; however, the predicted outcome would not be good in that case.

The influence of the near-fault ground motion on the response of long-span bridges must be considered as a critical factor for seismic design because the response indicates different aspects from existing earthquake characteristics. Also, it is important to note that the safety index for the risk assessment of long-span bridges is determined based on the minimum expected lifecycle cost E(LCC). In this study, earthquake characteristics are analyzed by creating elastic and inelastic response spectrums with actual measurement records (Chi-Chi earthquake records) and then the numerical analysis of the long-span bridge in Namhae, Korea is performed according to the increase and reduction of the member stiffness based on the standard design., the reliability evaluation of the long-span bridge considering aleatory uncertainties is performed on the basis of the combined results of static analysis and seismic response analysis. Also, the minimum LCC is estimated based on failure probabilities by the different alternative design. Because of epistemic uncertainties, the results of reliability evaluation and the LCC of optimal design are selected as random variables; the safety index, failure probability and expected minimum LCC are re-evaluated with regard to critical percentage values for a risk-averse design of the long-span bridge, and are presented graphically using cumulative percentages. It is, therefore, expected that this study will provide the basic information for the risk assessment and optimal design method in performing seismic design of the long-span bridge considering earthquake characteristics.
