Effect of Temperature Associated with Early Growth Stimulus on Shortening of Heading Dates in Rice
Song,Moon-Tae,Lee,Jeom-Ho,Cho,Youn-Sang,Hwang,Hung-Goo 한국자원식물학회 2002 Plant Resources Vol.5 No.2
The heading date is known to be controlled by two kinds of genetic constituent, photosensitivity and basic vegetable phase. For the latter, the effect of temperature in early growth period is critical to determine the shortness of vegetative growth periods in plant s life. A phytotron experiment on 55 rice cultivars, consisting of two ecotypes of rices, indica and japonica, was conducted at high and low temperature treatments at early growth stage to investigate the possible role of plant growth stimulus by high temperature to associate with shortening of heading date. The high temperature during the early growth stage stimulated the rice growth as measured by plant height with much difference of the growth response between indica and japonica. The conclusive finding that these growth stimulus in early growth stage was highly correlated with the acceleration of heading is, more or less, correlated with the heading of the late growth stage although we could not conclude the genes for early plant growth stimulus by high temperature is the same genes as the genes for accelerating of heading in the late growth stage of plants.

Molecular markers are useful tools for evaluating genetic diversity and determining cultivar identity. Present study was conducted to evaluate the genetic diversity within a diverse collection of rice accessions used for Korean breeding programs. Two hundred eighty-seven rice cultivars, composed of temperate japonica, tropical japonica, indica, and Tongil-type of Korean crossing parents were evaluated by means of 15 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. A total of 99 alleles were detected, and the number of alleles per marker ranged from 4 to 11, with an average of 6.6 per locus. Polymorphism information content (PIC) for each of the SSR markers ranged from 0.2924 to 0.8102 with an average of 0.5785. These results, with the result that use of only 15 SSR markers made all rice cultivars examined could be uniquely distinguished, imply the efficiency of SSR markers for analysis of genetic diversity in rice. Cluster analysis was performed on similar coefficient matrics calculated from SSR markers to generate a dendogram in which two major groups corresponding to japonica (Group I) and indica and Tongil type rice (group II) with additional subclasses within both major groups. The narrowness of the Korean breeding germplasm was revealed by the fact that most of the Korean-bred and Japan-bred temperate japonica cultivars were concentrated into only 2 of the sub-group I-1 (143 cultivars) and I-2 (58 cultivars) among six sub-groups in major group of japonica. This is because of the japonica accessions used in this study was a very closely related ones because of frequent sharing of the crossing parents with similar genetic background with synergy effect of the inherited genetic difference between indica and japonica. A rice breeding strategy with the use of molecular markers was discussed for overcoming of genetic vulnerability owing to this genetic narrowness.

Cutaneous vascular lesions can occur sporadically, and be a rare cutaneous manifestation of diseases. The molecular pathway involved in vasculogenesis has begun to be identified through genetic analysis of hereditary vascular malformation syndromes. A 19-month-old male infant presented with multiple scattered erythematous patches on his neck, trunk, and extremities. Skin biopsy from erythematous patch revealed slightly dilated, thin walled vessels in the upper dermis. He experienced two myoclonic seizures by 12 months of age. Developmental delay was identified on developmental assessment, but no abnormal findings were detected on brain MRI. Whole-genome cytogenetic array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis revealed microdeletion of 5q14.3. The patient’s phenotype of dermatologic and neurologic abnormalities constitutes a 5q14.3 neurocutaneous syndrome due to the deletion of RASA1 and MEF2C. Hereditary capillary malformations with/without arteriovenous malformations are known to be associated with mutation in RASA1, located on the long arm of chromosome 5. Several cases with 5q14.3 microdeletion showing mental retardation, epilepsy, cerebral malformations have been reported and MEF2C is considered as a candidate gene in those phenotype. To our knowledge, this is the 1st report of 5q14.3 neurocutaneous syndrome with multiple capillary malformations in Korean literature.

CNC(cellulose nanocrystal) is a renewable and biodegradable reinforcing filler that gives impressive mechanical properties to filled polymer composites. However, further studies are required for its application because of its low dispersibility in nonpolar polymer matrix, which is one major drawback for the application of CNC as a high value-added additive, and its strong tendency for self-agglomeration by internal hydrogen bonding. To overcome these shortcomings, the surface of CNC was modified with silane coupling agent(aminoethyl-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane, AEAPTMS) and some characterizations were examined. AEAPTMS is a kind of silane coupling agent and is known as an additive that effectively improves the functionality and compatibility with the polymer matrix. By just silylating the CNC surface with silane aquatic solutions, the CNC surface can be modified in a more direct, convenient and environmentally-friendly manner without using any hazardous solvents. The surface modified CNCs were analyzed using various characterization instruments (field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, etc.) in comparison with MFC(microfibrillated cellulose) and pristine CNC materials. This study is expected to improve the applicability and value-added of CNC as a reinforcing filler for various polymer composites.

Background: Dermatologic diseases are generally managed on outpatient clinic and most of them show very low mortality. However, some severe dermatologic diseases are life- threatening. Objectives: To investigate the dermatological diseases leading to death and related factors. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted by reviewing medical records of patients who died in the dermatology ward, Pusan National University Hospital from 1998 to 2014. Patients`` demographics, their dermatologic diseases, immediate causes of death, comorbidities, and factors related death were investigated. Results: The total number of inpatients on dermatology during the study period was 3,142. Fourteen patients (6 males, and 8 females) expired while in hospital. The median age was 63.8 years (ranged 18 to 86), and the maximum number of death occurred in the age group more than 70 years old. Drug reaction was the most common underlying dermatologic disease, followed by bullous disease, generalized pustular psoriasis, dermatomyositis. Sepsis due to infection was the most common immediate cause of death. All patients had at least one comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, and angina. Conclusion: Old age, comorbidities and septicemia were important factors which contributed to the mortality. Theintensive care is required during hospitalization in patients with severe dermatologic disease accompanying above risk factors.

Purpose: This study presents the process of designing workbooks for advance care planning appropriate for the Korean cultural setting and describes actual case studies. Methods: This study focused on single inductive case studies of the utilization of an advance care planning workbook and recruited individual participants. Results: The workbook for adolescents contained six sessions and the workbook for children contained seven sessions. The workbook sessions led to four major discoveries: 1) considering the Korean cultural context, discussions on life and death must be held indirectly; 2) the role of the counselor as a supporter is crucial for the workbook to be effective; 3) the workbook must be accessible regardless of the seriousness of the illness; and 4) patients must be able to make their own choice between the workbook versions for children and adolescents. Six facilitating factors improved engagement: 1) the role of the counselor as a supporter; 2) building trust with the patient; 3) affirming freedom of expression on topics the patient wished to avoid talking about; 4) having discussions on what private information to keep secret and to whom the information can be disclosed; 5) discovering and regularly discussing relevant topics; and 6) regular communication and information-sharing with the patient's medical service providers. Conclusion: It is necessary to build on actual case studies regarding workbooks for children and adolescents in order to expand the usage of these workbooks to all relevant medical institutions in Korea.

Background: Pruritus is common in psoriasis, but the pathogenesis of pruritus in psoriasis remains unclear. Moreover, reliable information on the characteristics of pruritus according to psoriasis clinical phenotypes is lacking. Objectives: To investigate the clinical characteristics of pruritus according to clinical phenotypes of psoriasis and to determine its association with inflammatory mediators related to pruritus. Methods: Clinical data on pruritus were collected by questionnaire including Leuvin itch scale. Quantitative measurement of serum neuropeptides and cytokines including substance P (SP), histamine, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) and interleukin-31 (IL-31) were analyzed. Results: Eighty-four patients with psoriasis (56 men, 28 women; mean age, 48.1 years) were divided into two groups according to clinical phenotype: chronic stable and eruptive inflammatory. There was no significant difference of pruritus intensity, psoriasis area severity index, and serum level of SP, histamine, VIP, NPY, CGRP, IL-31 between two groups. Serum SP level was significantly higher in patients with pruritus compared with patients without pruritus and normal controls. Conclusion: Substance P may play a role in pruritus of psoriasis as a systemic factor. However, characteristics of pruritus, serum neuropeptides related to pruritus did not differ according to clinical phenotype of psoriasis.
